James Buchanan
15th President of the United States

President Buchanan was a prominent figure in American political life for nearly half a century, holding some of the nation's highest offices. As president he played a role in the split that developed in his own Democratic Party. The split allowed the election of Republican Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. Young James received an academy education and attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., graduating in 1809. He then studied law in Lancaster, where he began practice in 1813. Although a Federalist in political sympathies, he supported the prosecution of the War of 1812 and participated as a volunteer in the defense of Baltimore.
After serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1814-16), Buchanan devoted attention to his law practice, which soon prospered. In 1819 he became engaged to Ann Coleman, daughter of a wealthy Lancaster iron manufacturer, but as a result of a misunderstanding the engagement was ended. Her sudden death shortly thereafter left Buchanan desolate. He never married.
In 1820, Buchanan was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. With the collapse of the Federalist party, he supported Andrew Jackson for the presidency. In the late 1820s he emerged as the leader of the Amalgamation party, the dominant faction of Pennsylvania Jacksonians.

James Buchanan - 15th President of the United States
Portrait of Hon. James Buchanan (National Archives) James Buchanan was the 15th (1857-1861) President of the United States. He was the only man to serve as President, who never married, and the only citizen of Pennsylvania to hold that office. Buchanan was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Wilkins. He was reelected in 1837 and 1843 and served from December 6, 1834, until he resigned on March 5, 1845, to accept a Cabinet portfolio. He was chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations (Twenty-fourth through Twenty-sixth Congresses). Buchanan served as Secretary of State in the Cabinet of President James Polk from 1845 to 1849, then as Minister to Great Britain from 1853 to 1856. He was elected as a Democrat President of the United States in 1856 and served from March 4, 1857, to March 3, 1861. He retired to his home "Wheatland," near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he died June 1, 1868. He was intered in Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Pa.

James Buchanan
James Buchanan, the only bachelor to be President, spent his entire term of office in an unusual attempt to maintain the integrity of the Union. By the time he left office, the secession of the Southern States was already in progress. Elected:
The Early Years
James Buchanan was born in a log Cabin at Cove Gap, a few miles outside of Mercerberg, Pennsylvania. At the age of five he and his family moved from the log cabin to Mercerberg. Buchanan received his initial education at the Old Stone Academy in Mercerberg. He went on to attend Dickinson College in Carlisle. He graduated in 1809 and moved to Lancaster to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1812. In October 1814, Buchanan was admitted to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Federalist. In 1820 he was elected to the US House of Representatives. Buchanan emerged as a leading opponent of the policies of John Quincy Adams. He was an active supporter of Jackson's presidential campaign. From 1829-31, Buchanan was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. In 1830, Buchanan declined to run for re-election, preferring to return to his law practice. From 1832-33, he served as the US Ambassador to Russia, where he successfully concluded a commercial treaty. From 1834-1845, Buchanan served in the US Senate. From 1837, he served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and from 1945, for four years, he was US Secretary of State. In 1848, Buchanan was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. When he was not selected, he supported his opponent, Lewis Cass, who lost the election. In 1852, he was once again a contender for the nomination, lost again, and this time the winner he supported - Franklin Pierce - was elected. Pierce appointed Buchanan Ambassador to Great Britain.

22-Jun-2001 Dear Cecil: I understand that Thomas Jefferson was our smartest president. Who was our stupidest? Second stupidest? A related pair of questions: Did Yale not have an admissions department in the 1960s? If it did, doesn't it owe the country an apology? Chris Lamb the elder, Baltimore Dear Cecil:: I realize there's probably no way the following can be determined with utter certainty. But in the best judgment of presidential scholars, have any of our chief executivesin addition to Ulysses S. Grant and George W. Bush, I meanbeen alcoholics? David English, Somerville, Massachusetts Cecil replies: I get the feeling you guys are trying to make a point here. But this is no time to be coy. Let's put the question bluntly: Is George W. Bush the stupidest person ever to serve as U.S. president? If not, who is? And isn't he a drunk besides? It's all the fault of those goddamn Republicans on the Supreme Court. Why, I oughta . . . There, there. Let's take this one step at a time.

As a Federalist lawyer, Buchanan served in the Pennsylvania legislature (1814-16) and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1821-31). When his party disintegrated in the 1820s, Buchanan associated himself with the emerging Democratic Party. He served as U.S. minister to St. Petersburg (1831-33), U.S. senator (1834-45), and secretary of state (1845-49) in the Cabinet of Pres. James K. Polk. Failing to receive the presidential nomination in 1848, Buchanan retired from public service until 1853, when he was appointed minister to Great Britain. Although he felt that slavery was morally wrong, Buchanan tried to impress the Southern party leadership with his respect for the Constitutional safeguards for the practice. Thus in 1846 he opposed the Wilmot Proviso, which would have prohibited the extension of slavery into the U.S. territories, and he supported the Compromise of 1850, which attempted to maintain a balance of Senate seats between slave and free states. In Europe he played a large part in drafting the Although well endowed with legal knowledge and experience in government, Buchanan lacked the soundness of judgment and moral courage to deal effectively with the slavery crisis. His strategy for the preservation of the Union consisted in the prevention of Northern antislavery agitation and the enforcement of the

Acceptable both to Northern Democrats and Southern moderates, he ran on a platform of popular sovereignty (the right of settlers in a territory to decide whether or not to sanction slavery). Within two days of his inauguration, however, in the Dred Scott Seeking to steer a middle course between the widely divergent philosophies of the South and North, Buchanan was unable in 1860 to prevent the breakup of his party or afterward to reunite the factions, one of which supported Vice-President John C. Breckinridge and the other Sen. Stephen A. Douglas. In the secession crisis following the victory of Republican Abraham Lincoln , Buchanan sought to gain time to allow passions to cool. Declaring that secession was illegal but that he had no power to prevent it, he attempted to preserve the peace by not provoking secessionists. Stiffening somewhat after the reorganization of his cabinet, he refused Southern demands that federal troops be ordered to abandon Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, S.C. His efforts to supply the fort failed, however, as did his plans for a constitutional convention. He left office disappointed and discredited.

James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States was distinguished as the only bachelor to serve as Chief Executive and was faulted for permitting the secession of the southern states precipitating the Civil War. Buchanan died June 1st, 1868, the end of his presidential term closing his 47 year career in politics. Born April 23rd, 1791 outside of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, James Buchanan was the son of Irish immigrants James and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan. The senior Buchanan prospered as a mechantile owner and sent his son to Dickinson College of Carlisle and for private law study in Lancaster, where he passed the Pennsylvania bar in 1812. As a young attorney, Buchanan operated a successful law practice and was engaged to Anne C. Coleman, a daughter of one of the state's wealthiest families. In 1819 the long Coleman-Buchanan engagement was terminated, by which and for what reason continually open to speculation, as was Miss Coleman's death the same week by possible suicide. James Buchanan never married, but took his young niece Harriet Lane as a ward when she was orphaned by his only sister.

    BUCHANAN, JAMES
, fifteenth president of the United States. Born in Pennsylvania of prosperous Scotch-Irish parents, Buchanan graduated from Dickinson College and became a highly successful lawyer. He began his political career as a Federalist, and after serving in the Pennsylvania legislature, he was elected to Congress in 1820. When the Federalist party collapsed, he joined the Andrew Jackson bandwagon and became an important Democratic leader in Congress. After a brief stint as minister to Russia, he was elected in 1834 to the Senate, where he served for a decade. Plodding and unimaginative, he was a loyal party man who strongly sympathized with the South on the slavery issue. In 1844 he helped carry Pennsylvania for James K. Polk and was rewarded by being named secretary of state. Overriding Buchanan's ingrained caution, Polk assumed the dominant role in shaping foreign policy, although Buchanan's studious habits and tact made him a useful subordinate in handling the Texas and Oregon controversies. He pushed the administration's unsuccessful effort to acquire Cuba, a goal he reaffirmed in the notorious Ostend Manifesto (1854). After unsuccessful bids for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1848 and 1852, he accepted an appointment in 1853 as minister to Britain. Since he was out of the country, he was not associated with the Kansas-Nebraska Act or the ensuing turmoil in Kansas, a fact that helped him win the Democratic presidential nomination in 1856. With strong support from the South, he was elected in November.
