History of Brunei
Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate, which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century and later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines . It was subjugated briefly by the Java -based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence. The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah ( ), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured

History Brunei is an independent nation ever since 1984. Its history is long and colorful and is one of Southeast Asia's oldest sovereign nations. Brunei has a recorded history of over 600 years. The country rose to prominence in the 15th and 16th centuries with the size covering Borneo and the entire present day Philippines. The first sultan to embrace Islam in Brunei was Sultan Muhammad I who reigned for 39 years in the 14th century. Around the year 1478, the sultans in the region managed to free themselves from the clutches of Hindu rulers and soon after that, Islam became rooted in Brunei. The first capital was established during the pre Islamic era. It is known as Puni, in the district of Temburong. The capital city was later moved to Kota Batu where the Brunei Museum now stands. The final move came during the reign of Sultan Muhyiddin I during the 17th century. Now, Bandar Seri Begawan is the country's capital. Brunei's past wealth was based on the export of camphor, pepper and gold.

Contemporary Brunei's modest size belies its pivotal role in the formative centuries of Bornean history
. China was probably trading with Brunei as long ago as the seventh century, and Brunei later benefited from its strategic position on the trade route between India, Melaka and China, exercising a lucrative control over merchant traffic in the South China Sea. It became a staging post, where traders could stock up on local supplies such as beeswax, camphor, rattan and brasswork, which was traded for ceramics, spices, woods and fabrics. For a brief period in the fourteenth century it was taken over by the Majapahit Empire
, but by the end of the century it had become

History: In ancient times, Brunei was a powerful trading nation controlling most of Borneo and part of the Philippines archipelago, with extensive connections throughout South-East Asia. The country was occupied briefly by the Spanish during the late 16th century. Part of the Spanish colonial mission was always the vigorous dissemination of Catholicism – in the previous century, Islam had been adopted in Brunei as the principal religion. In the mid-19th century, Brunei came under British influence when the seafarer, James Brooke, was granted control of the Sarawak region (now part of Malaysia) in return for protection against pirates. The island of Labuan was also ceded to Britain, thereby reducing Brunei to its current borders. In 1888, Britain declared ‘North Borneo’ to be a British Protectorate, under which the territory was governed by a British resident, with purely nominal powers available to the Sultan. This arrangement continued – apart from a period of Japanese occupation between 1941–1945 – until Brunei’s transition to independence began in 1959. That year, a new Anglo-Brunei agreement was signed, under which the UK assumed responsibility for defence and foreign affairs but passed control of all other matters to the Sultan. Three years later, the North Borneo Liberation Army instigated rebellions, during which a state of emergency was declared. As a result, the Sultan assumed the power to rule by decree. Since then, with the benefit of its vast oil wealth, Brunei has undergone steady, if somewhat unequal, development. The country is in many respects comparable to the Gulf sheikhdoms – small, exceedingly wealthy and more or less surrounded by larger, poorer nations.

WHY BRUNEI?
"Brunei is one of the oldest existing polities in Southeast Asia," observe D. Ranjit Singh and Jatswan S. Sidhu in their excellent Historical Dictionary of Brunei Darussalam (1997). It has a "rich historical heritage," they continue, "and is the longest surviving sultanate in the region." If that's not incentive enough to introduce your students to this unit on Brunei, compare the third curriculum standard listed below with this further assessment by Singh and Sidhu: "Through the ages … Brunei acquired an astute sense in the use of international diplomacy. The monarchy especially made effective use of this tool to steer the kingdom out of very tight situations and, in the process, has managed to save and preserve the identity of the state … to bring it to the status of a full sovereign nation." Clearly, Brunei is an excellent topic for teachers working on any standard of learning (SOL) that deals with the impact of globalization on traditional societies.

There appears to have been trade between the north-west coast of Kalimantan and China as early as the 6th century and Brunei was influenced by the spread of Hinduism/Buddhism from India in the first millenium. Chinese records make mention of a kingdom of Puni, located on the north-west coast of Kalimantan, which paid tribute to Chinese emperors between the 6th and the 9th centuries. Brunei was claimed by the great Javanese empire of Majapahit in the 14th century, though it was most likely little more than a trading/tributary relationship. Brunei became a more significant state in the 15th century with a greater degree of independence from its larger neighbours. When the Chinese Admiral Cheng Ho visited Brunei in the early 15th century, as part of his exploration of Southeast Asia, he discovered a significant trading port with resident Chinese traders engaged in profitable trade with the homeland.
