From the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines. Thus, the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world. By the 19th century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers.
In 1847, the sultan concluded a treaty with Great Britain and in 1888 Brunei Darussalam officially became a British protectorate. In 1906, the Residential System was established in Brunei Darussalam. A British Resident was nominated as a representative of the British government to advise the sultan in all matters except Malay customs, traditions and Islamic religion.
The 1959 Agreement established a written constitution which gave Brunei Darussalam internal self-government. In 1971, the agreement was amended and revised to assert full internal independence except defence and external affairs.
In 1967 His Highness Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicated in favour of his son Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah. On January 1, 1984 Brunei Darussalam resumed full independence and the Sultan took office as Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Home Affairs Minister, presiding over a cabinet of six. In October 1986, the cabinet was expanded to 11 members, with His Majesty relinquishing the portfolios of Finance and Home Affairs and taking over the Defence portfolio which his late father had held since 1984. In 1988 another reshuffle brought about the elevation of the deputy minister to a full minister and the creation of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources designed to boost the country's development.

INTRODUCTION The Brunei Currency Board (BCB) was established by the 1967 Currency Act in Chapter 32 of the Laws of Brunei. As stipulated in Section 9(1) of the Act, it has the sole right to manage and issue currency notes and coins in Brunei Darussalam. The currency issued by the Board is designated by Section 13 of the Act to serve as legal tender within the State. Brunei Darussalam commenced issuance of its own currency on 12th June 1967. Prior to this date, The Board of Commissioners of Currency which was reconstituted under the Malaya British Borneo Currency Agreement 1960, was the sole currency issuing authority in Malaysia, the Republic of Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, which was then known as the State of Brunei. Under the provision of the 1960 Currency Agreement, the effect of the lodgment of notice on 12th December 1964, by the Government of Malaysia to replace the Board by Bank Negara Malaysia as the sole currency issuing authority in Malaysia was that the Board would have to relinquish its powers to issue currency notes not later than 11th December 1966, and coins a year later. However, on 5th August 1966, the Participating Governments of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, signed an agreement to amend clause 18(a) of the Currency Agreement to allow the Board to continue to issue currency for the three countries for a further period of six months until 11th June 1967.

From history, we know Brunei as a powerful kingdom. Today, the Sultanate is shrunken and very few people could actually locate its precise position on the globe. Brunei, however, is often cited as the perfect example of comfortable affluence and incredible wealth flaunted before the eyes of impoverished neighbors. Jammed in between Sarawak and Sabah and just 2,248 square miles (5,765 sq. km) in area, it lies on the northwest coast of Borneo, divided in two by a region of Sarawak which extends to the sea on either side of the Limbang river. 85% of the country is covered by jungle. Apart from the coast road which leads from Sarawak into the capital, there are very few paved roads in the country.
Brunei is a tiny, but rich Islamic Sultanate on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, is the only major city. Tourist facilities are good, and generally available.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: U.S. passport-holders may take advantage of Brunei's participation in the Visa Waiver Pilot Program (VWPP), which allows visitors to Brunei for business or pleasure to obtain visas upon arrival for up to 90 days at no charge. The existing airport tax upon arrival/departure is Brunei dollars 12. For further information about entry requirements, travelers may consult the consular section of the Embassy of Brunei, 3520 International Court, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008; Tel: (202) 342-0159 (http://www.embassy.org/embassies/bn.html).

    HISTORY
Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century and later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence. The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan, Hassan (1605-19), who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure, elements of which remain. After Sultan Hassan, Brunei entered a period of decline, due to internal battles over royal succession as well as the rising influences of European colonial powers in the region, that, among other things, disrupted traditional trading patterns, destroying the economic base of Brunei and many other Southeast Asia sultanates. In 1839, the English adventurer James Brooke arrived in Borneo and helped the Sultan put down a rebellion. As a reward, he became governor and later "Rajah" of Sarawak in northwest Borneo and gradually expanded the territory under his control.

1974. Its inauguration marked an important date in the history of civilaviation in brunei. The airport opened brunei to the world.
    http://www.civil-aviation.gov.bn/

    Bahasa Brunei Version
Brief History History of the Department of Civil Aviation
Commercial air transport in Brunei began in 1953, with the establishment of air service links connecting Bandar Seri Begawan with Anduki in the Belait district. Initial flights to Malaysia were made to accommodate travellers from Labuan in Sabah and Lutong in Sarawak. Airport services were operated from the Berakas area at an old runway site built by the Japanese during World War II. It was known then as the Brunei Airport.
The growth in popularity of air travel in the '70s resulted in a significant increased in the civil aviation movement. Suddenly, the old airport was swamped with activity, operating beyond its capacity. This prompted the Government to scout for a new site to build a modern airport, in order to cater to the needs of the growing number of users, and simultaneously utilising modern technological development.
A new airport was constructed in Mukim Berakas in the Brunei-Muara District. The choice of the site proved a wise decision. It has the advantage of a strategic location - easily accessible from all areas of the country. The airport became operational in 1974. Its inauguration marked an important date in the history of civil aviation in Brunei. The airport opened Brunei to the world. Aptly, the new airport was named Brunei International Airport.
