Barunah!' exclaimed early settlers who reached the Brunei River. The classical Malay expression meant excellence of the site for settlement, security, access and richness of the surrounding. In short, "Oh, Yeah!". It is said the exclamation became the name of the new city-state. Barunah later changed to Barunai. Barunai, of Sanskrit origin, comes from the word Varuna. In its Malay context, it referred to a nation of seafarers and traders. Brunei and Borneo were among early European references to the state and the island. The second sultan, Sultan Ahmad, was the first to name 'Brunei' from the word 'Barunah'. Darussalam, Arabic terms for Abode of Peace, was added in the 15 th century by the third sultan, Sharif Ali, to emphasise Islam as state religion, and to enhance its spread. Old Brunei was a nation of Malay Hindu-Buddhists, according to a Chinese account of Puli, believed to be an early Chinese reference to Brute Old Brunei was said to have Similar Malay-Hindu Buddhist traditions and customs as Funan or Kumlun, Chinese names for the first Malay state in Indochina during the early Christian era. Indians knew it as Sailendra, and Arab traders called it Kamrun.

A British 'adviser' was assigned to the court in 1906, yet another compromise of the sultanate's independence. In 1929, just as Brunei was about to be swallowed up entirely, oil was discovered. British plans to make Brunei a part of the Malaysian Federation were quashed by a revolt in 1962. The Sultan suspended the constitution and opted for independence. The two countries signed a treaty in 1971 confirmed that Britain retained control of Brunei's external affairs. The country has been under emergency laws ever since the 1962 revolt and mooted elections have never eventuated. In 1984, Brunei became completely independent, and underlined its new independence from Britain by joining ASEAN. Since then, it has moved towards Islamic fundamentalism. In 1991, the sale of alcohol was banned and stricter dress codes have been introduced. At the least sign of internal dissent, the Sultan on each occasion moved quietly but decisively to silence his critics, and thus far his power has gone more or less unchallenged. In recent times, there have been pockets of disaffection challenging the status quo and agitating for a loosening of the rules. Arguments for change have been aided by royal scandals involving the sultan and by the profligate spending of the sultan's younger brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah. The polo-playing playboy has been charged over misappropriation of US$16 billion of state funds and is now suffering the indignity of a royal grounding and a reduction in his pocket money. Both the sultan and the prince found themselves in legal bother when a former US model threatened court action over sex abuse allegations. A tightening of the purse strings to offset both a recent plunge in oil prices and the prince's spendthrift lifestyle seems to suggest that Brunei's wealth isn't limitless after all, although it's hoped that shrewd investment will provide for all Bruneians when the oil runs out.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... BRUNEI Historians believe there was a forerunner to the present Brunei Sultanate, which the Chinese called Po-ni. Chinese and Arabic records indicate that this ancient trading kingdom existed at the mouth of the Brunei River as early as the seventh or eighth century A.D. This early kingdom was apparently conquered by the Sumatran Hindu empire of Srivijaya in the early ninth century, which later controlled northern Borneo and the Philippines. It was subjugated briefly by the Java-based Majapahit Empire but soon regained its independence and once again rose to prominence.
The Brunei Empire had its golden age from the 15th to the 17th centuries, when its control extended over the entire island of Borneo and north into the Philippines. Brunei was particularly powerful under the fifth sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), who was famed for his sea exploits and even briefly captured Manila; and under the ninth sultan, Hassan (1605-19), who fully developed an elaborate Royal Court structure, elements of which remain today.
After Sultan Hassan, Brunei entered a period of decline, due to internal battles over royal succession as well as the rising influences of European colonial powers in the region, that, among other things, disrupted traditional trading patterns, destroying the economic base of Brunei and many other Southeast Asian sultanates. In 1839, the English adventurer James Brooke arrived in Borneo and helped the Sultan put down a rebellion. As a reward, he became governor and later "Rajah" of Sarawak in northwest Borneo and gradually expanded the territory under his control.

It has a land border with the Malaysian state of Sarawak and a coastline along the shore of the South China Sea, encompassing a total area of 5,765 square kilometres. Brunei's equatorial climate brings consistently high levels of temperature, rainfall and humidity, with only minor seasonal variations. The average temperature is 28 degrees celsius. Top Brunei Muara District Brunei-Muara, with an area of 570 sq km, is the smallest of Brunei's four districts. But it remains the most important, populous and bustling district because the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan - seat of the government ministeries and departmental headquarters - is located here. Brunei History and Culture
History During the 15th and 16th centuries, Brunei was considered as one of the regional great powers, controlling Borneo and substantial parts of the Philippines as well. The Spanish and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive, but it was the British, who arrived in the region in the 17th and 18th centuries, who began to erode Brunei's influence. Sarawak was ceded to the British in the 19th century and a series of 'treaties' were forced on the Sultan as James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, consolidated his power base. In 1888, the sultanate became a British protectorate.

A Brief History of Brunei One of the Majesty's greatest achievements to his peers was the promulgation on September 29, 1959 as a written Constitution. This gave the State self-government and made the Sultan supreme executive in the country. Also, British Resident to Hi Commissioner who advised the Sultan on matter other than the ones related to Islam and Malay traditions. The government was responsible for defense and external affairs. To assist the Sultan they have formed councils. In the 60's there were a series of talks proposing to group the Federates Malay states. They eventually decided not to join Malaysia, which had formed 3 years after because of disagreement on several matters regarding Brunei Darussalam's future. They also resumed responsibilities as an independent and sovereign nation after midnight on December 31st 1983. This place is one of Asia's oldest kingdoms. They were imperial powers from the fifteenth to the sixteenth centuries. During the Ming dynasty, Brunei enjoyed good relations with China. Unfortunately, the king died on the tenth month in 1408 and was buried in Nan king. In the sixteenth century Brunei was a dominant power in the region with sovereignty embracing the whole Island of Borneo and as far as the Philippines. European presence was made around mid- 16th century. Brunei is now losing its empire which was besieged by problems, one which is war. In 1904 they shrunk to a little Sultanate surrounded on three sides by Sarawak and the north by the South China Sea.

In the 14th to the 16th centuries Brunei Darussalam was the seat of a powerful sultanate extending over Sabah, Sarawak and the lower Philippines. Thus the current Sultan represents one of the oldest continuously ruling dynasties in the world. By the 19t h century, the Brunei Darussalam Empire had been whittled away by wars, piracy and the colonial expansion of European powers.
In 1847, the sultan concluded a treaty with Great Britain and in 1888 Brunei Darussalam officially became a British protectorate. In 1906, the Residential System was established in Brunei Darussalam. A British Resident was nominated as a representative of the British government to advise the sultan in all matters except Malay customs, traditions and Islamic religion.
The 1959 Agreement established a written constitution which gave Brunei Darussalam internal self-government. In 1971 the agreement was amended and revised to assert full internal independence except defence and external affairs.
In 1967 His Highness Sultan Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien abdicated in favour of his son Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah. On January 1, 1984 Brunei Darussalam resumed full independence and the Sultan took office as Prime Minister, Finance Minis ter and Home Affairs Minister, presiding over a cabinet of six. In October 1986, the cabinet was expanded to 11 members, with His Majesty relinquishing the portfolios of Finance and Home Affairs and taking over the Defence portfolio which his late father had held since 1984. In 1988 another reshuffle brought about the elevation of the deputy minister to a full minister and the creation of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources designed to boost the country's development.
