Like legions of other proud parents, my wife and I sat beaming in the audience earlier this month, video camera in hand, as our son Benji, 6, stood with his fellow first-graders on the stage of his school auditorium and sang a medley of holiday songs. The adorably cute, multicultural program included Christmas favorites, a few Hanukkah melodies and even tunes in Swedish, Japanese and Arabic. What made our son's concert special is that he is a student at the Rabat American School, in the capital of Morocco, a country of 30 million Muslims, a population rattled by a wave of suicide bombings just six months ago. In this context, Benji's elementary school winter concert was an event of prime importance to U.S. national security. Ever since Sept. 11, experts have debated how to win the battle for hearts and minds among the world's 300 million Arabs and 1.2 billion Muslims. Everyone seems to have the magic bullet from creating Arabic language satellite television stations to counter sensationalist local media to building American style universities overseas so local students don't have to run the visa gauntlet to come to the United States. Many of these ideas have multimillion dollar pricetags. When I saw young Ahmed introduce a chorus of "Dreidel, Dreidel," I realized that American schools, 185 spread over 132 countries, are already playing a vital role in the international culture wars and deserve more support.

Canadian theatre troupe takes a bow in Brunei
Pantomima's public performances, school performances and drama workshops turned out to be very popular locally, as Brunei sees very little outside cultural entertainment, particularly from Western countries. They made a major impact on local audiences during course of their visit, and left very positive impressions of Canada and Canadian children's theatre. Pantomima also generated considerable media interest; a large number of articles about their visit appeared in the local Malay, Chinese and English dailies, and the group was also featured on two national television newscasts. His Royal Highness Prince Mateem, youngest son of the Sultan of Brunei, attended the public performance in Bandar as Guest of Honour. Prince Mateem has now attended several Canadian cultural events. The Pantomima visit assisted our ongoing efforts to introduce Canada, its people and its culture to Brunei, and to highlight the quality of our cultural performers. Hopefully, over time this will help to generate more interest in Canada as a tourist, and trade/investment destination, and encourage young Brunei citizens- and their parents- to consider studying in Canada in the future.

    Brunei Shipwreck educational activities
The following activities were specially designed for teachers and students by CfBT Education Services, Brunei Darussalam, but are equally suitable and easily adapted for use by parents and children at home. Three activities have been selected especially from the Brunei Shipwreck Education Pack, The Brunei Shipwreck – Teacher Resource Manual . They are Interpreting Evidence which includes an Archaeology Site Report Sheet Items for Trade including a Barter and Trade Game, and
    Time Capsule
Each activity stands alone, but all three may be used together, in the sequence suggested. These web activities would be significantly enhanced by a visit to the exhibition, especially since the Brunei shipwreck is the oldest ever to be represented by a display of objects at the Australian National Maritime Museum. The exhibition closes 27 April 2004 , so school groups will need to visit by the end of Term 1.
Activity 1 Interpreting Evidence Aim At the end of the lesson students will have practised making deductions and forming hypotheses based on historical evidence.

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM Diana P.P. Cheong COUNTRY PROFILE Brunei Darussalam is situated in the northwestern coast of Borneo and covers a land area of 5,765 sq km. It has a population of nearly 300,000 comprising two-thirds Malay and the rest, other indigenous people, Chinese and expatriates. According to 1994 population figures, 61% of Brunei’s population is under the age of 30 years while only 6.6% is above 55 years of age. Brunei Darussalam was a British protectorate from 1906 to 1983 during which time it was known simply as Brunei. In 1984, when it gained full independence the longer name was adopted and it means ‘Abode of Peace’. Although Brunei Darussalam still holds close links with Britain (for example in the educational arena), politically, it is a sovereign, democratic Malay Muslim Monarchy. At present the government consists of 12 ministries.

    Traditional Chinese Opera
Traditional Chinese opera has a history of more than 800 years. It is an art form which integrates singing, music, dialogue, acting and acrobatics. There are more than 300 different operatic forms in China. Among the local operatic forms staged nationwide are Beijing Opera, Pingju Opera, Shaoxing Opera and Henan Opera. The best-known is Beijing Opera, which has a history of more than 200 years. It originated in Beijing, then capital of Qing Dynasty. There are different schools, styles and forms of singing in Beijing Opera. In acting and acrobatic fighting, different roles follow different patterns, and their movements and gestures are stylized, suggestive and symbolic. For instance, the actions of opening a door, going up the stairs , rowing a boat or climbing a bill, are done purely through the dance-like movements of the actors with the help of props. String and percussion instruments also provide a distinct characteristic of Beijing Opera. (To enjoy Beijing Opera, click here for audio file.) Modern Chinese drama has developed under the influence of foreign dramatic literature and conventions . In the 1910's, drama troupes were formed in the country. The most popular plays staged in the 1930's and 1940's are Thunderstorm, Sunrise, Qu Yuan and Twin Flowers.
