Situated on the wonderful island of Borneo , amid rainforest, tropical beaches and other areas of outstanding beauty is the small gem that is Brunei. Locally known by its full name Brunei Darussalam , it is here that you can get from city to rainforest by boat in less than two hours. The capital, Bandar Seri Begawan is a modernised centre with large public buildings. The rest of the country: 85% of beautiful, untouched jungle.
In the School Hall, in school uniform This small Islamic country has derived much of its wealth from its precious oil reserves, but an y association with the Middle East couldn’t be further from the truth. The residents of Brunei are well looked after with free health care, education and public facilities; not to mention cheap loans and high, tax free incomes. In return Bruneians respect the Islamic culture, with their conformist lifestyles and total abstinence from alcohol. The Sultanate of Brunei (Full name: His Majesty the Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah – now that’s a mouthful!) is a very important figure. Brunei is situated just north-west of Borneo, with the South China Sea at its north and the Malaysian State of Sarawak surrounding all other sides. The climate is hot with high humidity and heavy rainfall. There is no distinct wet season, rainfall occurs throughout the year, but is heaviest between September and January. Temperatures are usually between 24 and 31 degrees Celsius and with the average humidity at 79% this tropical country is a pretty warm and humid place to be!!

Indonesia Time and Date Indonesia Culture Back to Top There are, however, striking similarities among the nation's diverse groups. Besides citizenship in a common nation-state, the single most unifying cultural characteristic is a shared linguistic heritage. Almost all of the nation's more than 195 million people speak one of several Austronesian languages, whichalthough not mutually intelligibleshare many vocabulary items and have similar sentence patterns. Most important, the vast majority of the population can speak Bahasa Indonesia, the official national language. Used in government, schools, print and electronic media, and in multiethnic cities, this Malay-derived language is both an important unifying symbol and a vehicle of national integration. Nearly 70 percent of Indonesians lived outside of cities, which, according to the definition used by the government's Central Bureau of Statistics, were areas with population densities greater than 5,000 persons per square kilometer or where less than 25 percent of the households were employed in the agricultural sector. Indeed, most Indonesians in the early 1990s, as their ancestors before them, were closely associated with agriculture, stockbreeding, or fishing. Whereas some isolated farming communities were comprised essentially of subsistence farmersliving off what they grewmost depended to some degree on cash profits earned from selling their produce at mercantile centers. Aside from coffee and rubber plantations, large-scale, highly capitalized agribusinesses, such as industrialized rice farming or chicken farms, remained the exception in Indonesia.

Country Info Lithuania Introduction Lithuania General Data Lithuania Maps Lithuania Culture ... Lithuania Time and Date Lithuania Culture Back to Top Like Latvian and Old Prussian, the Lithuanian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The size of the territory in which Lithuanian was spoken shrank considerably through the ages. Today it is roughly coterminous with the boundaries of Lithuania except for some areas of Lithuanian speakers in Poland and Belarus, and except for the diaspora living in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and even Siberia. The medieval Lithuanian rulers did not develop a written form of the Lithuanian language. The literary Lithuanian language, based on a southwestern Lithuanian dialect, came into use during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, replacing the use of the Samogitian, or western Lithuanian, dialect. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the use of Lithuanian was confined mainly to the peasantry, but the language was revived subsequently. In 1988 it was declared the official language of Lithuania, as it had been during 1918-40 and the early years of Soviet rule. Unlike Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania's cultural development was affected by Poland rather than Germany. The imperial Russian regime had an enormous impact on Lithuania from 1795 to 1915, and the Soviet Union had similar influence from 1940 to 1991. Direct contacts with western Europe also made significant contributions beginning in the sixteenth century. Lithuanian nobility in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries and Lithuanian intellectuals since the turn of the twentieth century brought back ideas and experiences from Italy, Germany, and France. Also, between the two world wars independent Lithuania's direct communication with western Europe affected the development of educational and religious institutions, the arts and literature, architecture, and social thought. Lithuania's historical heritage and the imprint of the Western outlook acquired in the twentieth century were strong enough to make Soviet citizens feel that by going to Lithuania they were going abroad, to the West.

Junior Secondary Mathematics Student’s Learning Environment and Satisfaction in Brunei Darussalam Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia Paper Presented at the Annual Conference of the Australian Association for Research in Education December 2-6, 2001, Fremantle, Western Australia ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The education policy, the school’s culture and specific situational factors all contribute to the routine habits of teachers and students. A school’s culture has its own language, knowledge and vocabulary which each contribute to a particular orientation to mathematics education. The education system in Brunei Darussalam is centralised and examination oriented. At various stages during their education, students in Brunei Darussalam undergo examinations that determine their selection, placement and promotion. The education system is largely content driven, with an emphasis on students passing the examinations. There would appear to be limited change in teaching styles and general classroom management since the 1960s, with reports (Ministry of Education, 1993a) indicating that teachers are experiencing problems in the teaching and learning mathematics in Brunei Darussalam's schools. The present study investigated the extent to which these reported problems might be affecting the mathematics classroom environment in Brunei Darussalam's junior secondary schools. In addition, because students' attitudes towards mathematics are considered an important factor in mathematics classrooms, this study also included assessment of students’ attitudes and investigated their association with the nature of the mathematics classroom learning environment.

THE IMPACT OF AN IN-SERVICE COURSE FOR PRIMARY TEACHERS Rowena H. Scott Central Queensland University and Darrell L. Fisher Curtin University of Technology Abstract Introduction Traditional and Innovative Science Programs Selected Specialist Science Teachers There is a need in all education research to correct the Anglo-Saxon bias and, thus, to eliminate the generalisations from research conducted in Western countries to developing countries. To test for universality of hypotheses is another, though controversial, reason for advocating cross-national studies (Wubbels, 1993). This study of science classes in Brunei was conducted in part by the first author, an Australian teacher-researcher, who was teaching in Brunei government schools at the time. Attempts to improve the quality of teachers and teaching through pre-service and in-service courses at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) has been a goal since its establishment in 1985. Teachers admitted that they were not confident with the content of the subject, hence they sought courses that might enable them to learn the content of the science syllabus as well as methods to enable them to transfer this content into the classroom. Lecturers and inspectors of teachers agreed that teaching methods were, as they described, "chalk and talk", "traditional", "overemphasis on drills and practices", and "lots of copying on the blackboard". The culture of the society in Brunei may be another influencing factor contributing to the unselfconscious, routinised habits of teachers and students (Zaitun, 1997).

E very social studies unit created by Learning Enrichment includes carefully researched content, as well as up-to-date graphics prepared exclusively for LE readers. The organization of student pages in these units may vary from series to series and topic to topic. But material addressed to teachers almost always includes: curriculum objectives tied to social studies standards; lists of critical terms and follow-up resources; discussion questions; and extended information on the unit topic. Over the years, LE's commitment to that approach has resulted in a string of warmly received classroom units under such series titles as "Country Studies," "Critical Thinking," "Widening Circles" (the impact of globalization), "Regions Matter!" and a research series with the umbrella title, "And Now...." HIGH SCHOOL STUDY UNITS The "And Now...." Series. Designed for teachers and students in World History courses, Grades 10-12, each unit in the "And Now...." series profiles a contemporary nation, with special attention to the changes it has faced in recent decades. The unit explores an issue which the nation currently faces, and it highlights data that students might want to keep in mind as they research that issue. Thus, the questions, map, chart, and text in the unit combine to form an "issue-driven" research guide.

Traditional Chinese Opera
Traditional Chinese opera has a history of more than 800 years. It is an art form which integrates singing, music, dialogue, acting and acrobatics. There are more than 300 different operatic forms in China. Among the local operatic forms staged nationwide are Beijing Opera, Pingju Opera, Shaoxing Opera and Henan Opera. The best-known is Beijing Opera, which has a history of more than 200 years. It originated in Beijing, then capital of Qing Dynasty. There are different schools, styles and forms of singing in Beijing Opera. In acting and acrobatic fighting, different roles follow different patterns, and their movements and gestures are stylized, suggestive and symbolic. For instance, the actions of opening a door, going up the stairs , rowing a boat or climbing a bill, are done purely through the dance-like movements of the actors with the help of props. String and percussion instruments also provide a distinct characteristic of Beijing Opera. Modern Chinese drama has developed under the influence of foreign dramatic literature and conventions . In the 1910's, drama troupes were formed in the country. The most popular plays staged in the 1930's and 1940's are Thunderstorm, Sunrise, Qu Yuan and Twin Flowers.
