BruneiDirect.Com Brunei’s MIB Concept Takes Deeper Root In the Sultanate Bandar Seri Begawan – The government of His Majesty Sultan of Brunei understands the importance of instilling national identity in all Bruneians. In line with this, the government has introduced a curriculum to promote national identity by introducing subjects such as civics and MIB (Melayu Islam Beraja) in primary and secondary schools, and at the university. Melayu Islam Berja (MIB), the Malay Islamic Monarchy concept is a homegrown frame work cementing the centuries old rule of the sultan and that of his people in the context of religion, culture and royal traditional values enveloping national identity. That was the topic of a working paper presented by Pengiran Dr Haji Abu Bakar Bin Pengiran Haji Sarifuddin, the Director of the Academy of Brunei Students at UBD. The paper was aimed at discussing the importance of the education system in implanting the concept of MIB among the young. There is a perception among parents, teachers and students that the study of MIB has no practical value, compared to subjects such as Science, Mathematics and English.

Brunei Muara District Tutong District Belait District ... Business Hours Brunei in Brief Brunei is located north-west corner of the island of Borneo. It has a land border with the Malaysian state of Sarawak and a coastline along the shore of the South China Sea, encompassing a total area of 5,765 square kilometres. Brunei's equatorial climate brings consistently high levels of temperature, rainfall and humidity, with only minor seasonal variations. The average temperature is 28 degrees celsius. Top Brunei Muara District Brunei-Muara, with an area of 570 sq km, is the smallest of Brunei's four districts. But it remains the most important, populous and bustling district because the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan - seat of the government ministeries and departmental headquarters - is located here. Starting from the city centre itself and moving out into the rural areas, the district has a wide variety of sights to see and places of interest to visit.

Early European visitors to Brunei Darussalam described the Kampong Ayer, or Water Village, as the Venice of the East. Today, visitors continue to be fascinated by these traditional and historic houses on stilts which span the greater part of the Brunei River.

You cannot talk about Teaching today or tomorrow without addressing Globalisation. Globalisation is a reality. Some call it an outcome of Post-Colonialism and the arrival of the digital age has given it even more power and access, but for sure it affects most areas of life: Education is one of those areas. In fact, colonialist tendencies have never really been abandoned; since Byzantium, Northern Mediterranean Civilization has been on the go. Byzantium is another word for Western Culture; it came to be called 'Western' more recently since the USA has entered the World of Nation States and began to dominate. My particular story, that of a Western 'Icon' discovering Islam, and joining the prayer line of fellow Muslim, Believers is a microcosm of what can happen when the teachings of Islam are conveyed truly and without distortion or hindrance. However, nothing had prepared me for what I was about to discover in regards to the present state of Muslims globally. As fortunate as I have been to discover Islam, I cannot express my gratitude to Allah Almighty enough for having guided me to the portal of Islamic Education. And a Wise Education, I believe, can provide the solution to our Ummah's present malaise.

River Cruise
A one and a half hour cruise on the Brunei river at sunset affords the traveller a glimpse of Brunei Darussalam's culture and history. The river trips starts at the Bandar Marine Department at 6:30 in the evening when the Tanjung Bakarang lifts anchor to sail into the sunset. The most striking landmark is the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, an edifice of classical Islamic architecture, with a golden dome. A colourful sights when it lit up at night on festival days is an elegant concrete boat that resembles a 16th century royal barge built in the middle of a lagoon and linked to the mosque. On the outside of the lagoon is the water village, the famous Kampong Ayer, home to the 30,000 people in huddled wooden houses raised on stilts. The centuries-old settlement includes schools and medical clinics and houses with modern amenities. Raised walkways meander between the packed houses where underneath zoom wooden boats with powerful engines. Majestically rising on the bank of the Brunei River, three kilometres from the town centre, lies the Istana Nurul Iman which is the residence of His Majesty the Sultan. Nearby is the small recreation park with an open air display of sculptures from the six Asean countries.

CULTURE AND INFORMATION
Promoting awareness of ASEAN moved to high gear during the year. Following calls from the ASEAN Leaders and the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information to intensify efforts in this work, the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) and the national information agencies of member countries carried out a combined mix of promotional activities, campaigns and events designed to make people better informed of developments in ASEAN and promote regional identity. As ASEAN celebrated its 35th anniversary, COCI organized high-impact festivities with the theme “Celebrating 35 Years of ASEAN Cooperation.” The celebrations in most member countries involved the participation of schools, media, government, and civic organizations. Activities were in the form of costume parades, cultural performances and exhibitions, poster and greeting card competitions, food fairs in hotels and restaurants, including breakfast forums with opinion makers and formal diplomatic receptions.
In collaboration with the Jakarta Arts Festival 2002, the ASEAN Secretariat hosted several events in its premises with the theme “ASEAN Celebrates Jakarta Arts Festival.” These were in the form of dance, theatre and music productions from various countries.

Plan your program: The Australian qualifications system
In the Australian education system, you can move through flexible study pathways to gain the right balance of practical skills and theoretical knowledge for your future career. Australian education providers have worked together to create a well-established system that helps you move easily from one level of study to the next. The Australian Qualifications Framework, or AQF (see diagram), is a national system. Unlike in many other countries, the Government carefully oversees quality standards, so you can be confident that you will receive the same high quality education no matter which institution you choose in Australia. The AQF lets you design the study program you require for your individual learning and career options. The Australian education system is very flexible. It assumes that people will continue education throughout their lives. That means students can enter and exit the system at almost any point, and they can re-enter vocational or university courses later in their careers. As Professor Deryck Schreuder, Chair of the Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee, says, “We now live in an era where it is uncommon to pursue just one career path throughout our working life. Society demands that we continually educate ourselves and that we continually acquire new skills to ensure our long-term employability.”

T he 6th July saw the opening of the Royal Persian Painting: The Qajar Epoch 1785-1925 exhibition at the Brunei Gallery, in London. The exhibition, which was organised by the Brooklyn Museum in New York, has visited Los Angeles and New York before arriving in London, its only European destination. This is an impressive and highly significant exhibition for it boasts of over one hundred oil paintings, photographs and artefacts brought together from European, American, Russian and Iranian collections for the first time. Paintings of the Qajar epoch mark an important watershed in Iranian art. The late eighteenth and nineteenth century saw the transition from the opulence and lavishness typified by Safavid courtly art, to a more reflective and interiorised naturalism which set the tone for the piety and conservatism of twentieth century Iran.
Fath Ali Shah Seated
Fath Ali Shah saw himself as a successor not only to the preceding Safavid and Zand monarchs, but also as heir to the great Sasanian and Achaemenid Persian dynasties. These pretensions are shown in the luxurious glamour of early Qajar painting.

A Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures About Brunei
Abode of Peace is the literal translation of Brunei Darussalam. Brunei is located on the north-west coast of exotic Borneo, surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, and on the west, by the South China Sea. Brunei is divided into four districts, Brunei-Muara, Temburong, Tutong and Belait. The country consists of 5,765 sq km of land, most of which is still covered by rich tropical rainforest. Of this, the majority is still untouched primary jungle which hosts a large variety of flora and fauna. History
Once called Poli or Puni by sixth century Chinese historians, Bruneis exposure to Islam started as far back as the 5th century. Bruneis empire once extended throughout Borneo, the southern parts of the Philippines and parts of Indonesia. When European influence spread throughout the region, Bruneis territory and power declined. In 1906 Brunei became a British protectorate and the British Resident became an adviser to the Sultan on all matters except Islamic affairs and Malay customs. In 1959, the Anglo-Brunei Treaty was signed and this gave Brunei its first constitution. In 1979, both countries signed a treaty of friendship and co-operation, paving the way for full independence in 1984. Membership of the UN, the British Commonwealth, ASEAN, and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) quickly followed.
