Brunei
Culture
Bruneians are predominantly Malay, and customs, beliefs and pastimes are very similar to those of Peninsular Malaysia. Adat , or customary law, governs many of the country's ceremonies; there is even a government department responsible for preserving ceremony and advising on protocol, dress and heraldry. Brunei is a fairly strict Muslim country and a Ministry of Religious Affairs fosters and promotes Islam. The constitution does, however, allow for other religions to be practised. The official language is Malay, but English is widely spoken. Jawi , Malay written in Arabic script, is taught in schools, and most signs in the country are written both in Jawi and Roman script. During the height of the Brunei sultanates, brass and silver artisans produced finely designed brass gongs, cannons and household vessels. They were often embossed with designs of serpents and animals or verses from the Koran. Many crafts failed to survive the decline of the sultanate, but silverwork and weaving are two traditional crafts that have been preserved.

WHY BRUNEI?
"Brunei is one of the oldest existing polities in Southeast Asia," observe D. Ranjit Singh and Jatswan S. Sidhu in their excellent Historical Dictionary of Brunei Darussalam (1997). It has a "rich historical heritage," they continue, "and is the longest surviving sultanate in the region." If that's not incentive enough to introduce your students to this unit on Brunei, compare the third curriculum standard listed below with this further assessment by Singh and Sidhu: "Through the ages … Brunei acquired an astute sense in the use of international diplomacy. The monarchy especially made effective use of this tool to steer the kingdom out of very tight situations and, in the process, has managed to save and preserve the identity of the state … to bring it to the status of a full sovereign nation." Clearly, Brunei is an excellent topic for teachers working on any standard of learning (SOL) that deals with the impact of globalization on traditional societies.

Brunei in Brief
Brunei Muara District Tutong District Belait District ... Business Hours Brunei in Brief Brunei is located north-west corner of the island of Borneo. It has a land border with the Malaysian state of Sarawak and a coastline along the shore of the South China Sea, encompassing a total area of 5,765 square kilometres. Brunei's equatorial climate brings consistently high levels of temperature, rainfall and humidity, with only minor seasonal variations. The average temperature is 28 degrees celsius. Top Brunei Muara District Brunei-Muara, with an area of 570 sq km, is the smallest of Brunei's four districts. But it remains the most important, populous and bustling district because the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan - seat of the government ministeries and departmental headquarters - is located here. Starting from the city centre itself and moving out into the rural areas, the district has a wide variety of sights to see and places of interest to visit.

Early European visitors to Brunei Darussalam described the Kampong Ayer, or Water Village, as the Venice of the East. Today, visitors continue to be fascinated by these traditional and historic houses on stilts which span the greater part of the Brunei River.

Introduction
This tiny oil-rich Islamic sultanate lying on the northwest coast of Borneo is known chiefly for the astounding wealth of its Sultan, its tax-free, subsidised society, and the fact that (statistically at least) its population enjoy one of the highest per capita incomes on earth. Despite the ostentatious modern public buildings in the capital, most of the country remains undeveloped and untouched by the outside world. Alcohol is virtually unobtainable, there's no nightlife to speak of, and the political culture encourages quiet acquiescence to the edicts of the sultan. You could work in a school in a village, or one by the beach, or a rural school in the rainforest ... or even a school in Kampong Ayer. A Kampong Ayer is a collection of 28 Water Villages built on stilts in the Brunei River and here you'd go to school by boat - a novel way to start the day!

You'll have four days Induction before you start work, and some of this will be devoted to some training and guidance on teaching in your school. You'll be given a tour of the town and the area, plus in-depth information about the local culture. You'll also be guided on what to do, what not to do, how to dress, how to behave, as well as useful local information like banking hours, etc. We work with the CfBT, which stands for the Centre for British Teachers. This company employs expatriate native English speakers from Australia, Canada, America and the UK, who are placed in carefully selected schools throughout Brunei. They also require the help of volunteers, to work in certain schools that particularly need the help. Through the CfBT’s dedication to teaching, they have built up an excellent resource centre which you will be able to use to help you with your teaching. Facilities here include a library, (with many workbooks and other resources that you can draw on), Internet access and photocopiers to enable you to produce materials for your lessons. There will be lots of help available to help you with structuring your lessons.

Cons Prejudices Full Review I lived in Brunei for three years, experiencing first-hand of what the tiny nation is like. I lived similar to that of what a local Bruneian would, having attended two local schools, eating at the infamous Pasar Malam (night market), playing the ever-popular game of football with my local kampong (village), and experiencing a week at a Brunei mainstream hospital. I was 12 years old when I arrived in Brunei on Christmas Eve 1993. Christmas doesn't really exist among the majority of Muslims in Brunei,- quite a culture shock in comparison to my origin, New Zealand. My Dad was granted a school-teaching position in Brunei, so he and I were the first explorers of our family to encounter the small unknown jungle-land. We stayed at the JUBILEE PLAZA HOTEL for six months, of which was paid fully by the Sultanate government. It is a friendly accommodation. However it had a murder there soon after we left, which made big news in the BORNEO BULLETIN - Brunei's national paper.

Country Report: Ideal School Brunei Darussalam Presented by Miss DK Nur Izzah Nazurah binti Pg Mohammad Mr Mohd Shah Risal Amir Hj Mohiddin THE IDEAL EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR THE FUTURE Quick overview of our country Brunei Darussalam (the abode of peace)
Introduction – the importance of education
Education. What do you understand by the term education ? Why should we take it as something very important in our life ? Why do we have to go to school everyday? Why not just stay at home enjoying yourself, playing games, have telephone conversations, surf the internet….why do we have to spend most of the time in our young age to study ? Well there is one word which can answer most of these questions – future. The first thing that most parents would think about their children is how to develop the future of their child…here education plays as an important part. Education is one of the most important factor in development of a country. A country without educated youths is like a car running out of fuel. We need educated youths for human resource development so that by decreasing the number of foreign employees, it will help us to slow down the flow of our money to outside our country. Education is like a bridge that can close the gap between cultural differences and promote unity and cooperation – the reason why we are invited to this country (Thailand).

The Development of Education In Brunei Darussalam. Formal education began in Brunei in 1912 with the opening of a Malay vernacular school in Brunei Town (now known as Bandar Seri Begawan). By 1918, similar schools had been opened in Muara, Belait and Tutong. Education in these early vernacular schools was limited. It was conducted in Malay for boys aged between seven and fourteen years and the curriculum included Reading and Writing (in both Arabic and Romanised script), Composition, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Hygiene, Drawing and Physical Education. Gardening and Basketry were later introduced at some schools. The Chinese community established their own school in 1916 and the first non-government English medium primary school was established in Seria in 1931. In order to encourage parents to send their children to school, limited compulsory attendance was introduced in 1929. The Brunei Town area was the only location immediately affected.
