The sultanate of Sulu included Sabah (in northern Borneo) from 1658 until the late 19th century, when it was leased to Europeans. The sultanate never surrendered its claim to the region, but it became a British protectorate and is now part of Malaysia. The sultanate's heirs still hope to regain control of Sabah. (

    Background
Ellen visited Brunei in September 1991 to make preliminary arrangements for the project. By this time, however, it had become clear that the Brunei authorities would not permit research in the Batu Apoi area. As a wildlife reserve, the government did not officially allow human settlement and subsistence extraction, although it was known to occur. As a result, the project moved to Sukang in the Belait district, and our official sponsor and institutional collaborator became the Brunei Museum rather than UBD. Bernstein arrived in the field in April 1992 and made three short preliminary trips to Sukang, where he encountered delays and logistical problems, and for which he was eventually unable to obtain official residence permission. The field site, therefore, moved yet again, this time to Tasek Merimbun (Rambai Sub-district) in the Tutong district, a location which Ellen had visited in 1991 and ear-marked as a possibility. Moving the field site twice led to inevitable delays, a missed optimal season for collecting ethnobotanical specimens, and to the effective detachment of the ESRC project from the biological work being done in Temburong. However, Tasek Merimbun has otherwise proved to be a most satisfactory field site, with excellent access. The award of a three month extension by the ESRC has compensated for most of the lost time.

Government adopts action plan The government has adopted a seven-point action plan aimed at achieving targets set by the ninth conference of the Party Central Committee in the ninth tenure. The action plan calls for accelerating the equitisation of major corporations and enterprises; promoting the shift to market mechanism and the development of various types of markets; and taking measures to attract investment and reduce wastefulness. The government also plans to involve all social levels in education and health-care services, and prepare for the country's entry into the World Trade Organisation and integration into the international economy. Hunger eradication and poverty reduction is also a major objective in the plan, and last but not least, the issue of administrative reform and the fight against corruption, which is considered the key task of 2004. Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, who signed the action plan on March 31, instructed ministries, governmental agencies, provinces and cities to work out their own action plan and carefully supervise the implementation of the government's plan. Best of Brunei Culture Most citizens of Brunei are Malays and their customs, beliefs and past times are similar to those of Peninsular Malaysia. The customary law or adat are dominant in many of the country's ceremonies. Brunei is a fairly strict Muslim country. The Ministry of Religious Affairs fosters and promotes Islam. Other religions are allowed in Brunei. During the peak of the Brunei sultanates, brass and silver artisans came up with many beautiful and finely designed brass gongs, cannons and household vessels. These products were usually embossed with designs of serpents and animals. Some have verses from the Koran. Despite the decline in many of these crafts during the weak period of the sultanate, yet the silverwork and weaving are two traditional crafts that survived and preserved to this day.

    http://meaindia.nic.in/foreignrelation/25fr01.htm
India - Brunei INDIA-BRUNEI BILATERAL RELATIONS Contacts between India and Brunei have been historical, an extension of the contacts with peninsular Malaysia and the Indonesian islands. As one of the Malay Sultanates, Brunei also carries a legacy of Hindu-Buddhist cultural traditions. During colonial times, especially after the discovery of oil in 1929, Indians took up employment in substantial numbers in Brunei, in the oil sector, in related public services and later as teachers. Some of them even inter-married locally. 2. Bilateral diplomatic relations between India and Brunei were established in May 1984. The Sultan paid a State visit to India in September 1992. The visit proved very successful and remains the high watermark of the bilateral relations. As a follow-up of the understanding reached during the visit, both countries established resident diplomatic missions in mid-1993. 3. Several high level visits have been exchanged between the two countries from time to time. The latest in the series were the visits to Brunei of MOS for External Affairs, Shri Omar Abdullah in May 2002 and of Minister of External Affairs Shri Yashwant Sinha in July 2002 while HRH Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at Large in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam visited India in April 2000. 4. Development of bilateral relations in the recent years has been marked by the signing of an Air Services Agreement in November 1995 paving the way for commencement of direct flights, by Royal Brunei Airlines, between Brunei and Calcutta; setting up a Joint Committee in 1995 for bilateral consultations between the two Foreign Ministries; and an agreement in the space field, signed in August 1997, for setting up of an Indian TTC (Telemetry, Tracking and Command) Centre in Brunei as part of Indian space programme for its Geo-synchronous Launch Vehicles (GSLV).
