Junior Secondary Mathematics Student’s Learning Environment and Satisfaction in Brunei Darussalam Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia Paper Presented at the Annual Conference of the Australian Association for Research in Education December 2-6, 2001, Fremantle, Western Australia ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The education policy, the school’s culture and specific situational factors all contribute to the routine habits of teachers and students. A school’s culture has its own language, knowledge and vocabulary which each contribute to a particular orientation to mathematics education. The education system in Brunei Darussalam is centralised and examination oriented. At various stages during their education, students in Brunei Darussalam undergo examinations that determine their selection, placement and promotion. The education system is largely content driven, with an emphasis on students passing the examinations. There would appear to be limited change in teaching styles and general classroom management since the 1960s, with reports (Ministry of Education, 1993a) indicating that teachers are experiencing problems in the teaching and learning mathematics in Brunei Darussalam's schools. The present study investigated the extent to which these reported problems might be affecting the mathematics classroom environment in Brunei Darussalam's junior secondary schools. In addition, because students' attitudes towards mathematics are considered an important factor in mathematics classrooms, this study also included assessment of students’ attitudes and investigated their association with the nature of the mathematics classroom learning environment.

Generally attributed to the inventor Alexander Graham Bell, the first was built in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1876. However, an Italian inventor Antonio Meucci is said to have invented the device in 1849, and in September 2001, Meucci was officially credited by the US Congress with the invention of the telephone, instead of Alexander Graham Bell. According to other Sources Philip Reis invented it in 1860, but due to a false translation of the German word "Telephon" his invention was considered only the predecessor of Bell's one.

New Political and Cultural Issues in ASEAN
ASEAN was born in 1967 as the US was losing its grip on the Vietnam War and SEATO was proving itself a paper tiger. Then a conglomeration of five nations, namely Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines, ASEAN was anti-Communist and afraid of Communist aggression, as some of its member states had collaborated with the US in anti-communist drives. Back then, Thailand and the Philippines had provided military and naval bases, besides offering contingents of their armed forces.
By GANGANATH JHA
In 1967 none of the ASEAN partners had diplomatic relations with Communist China or Vietnam, whom they viewed as hostile neighbours and destabilizing forces. They were faced with armed insurgencies, supported by the Communist forces. They faced common threats, and consequently their perception and policies were often complementary. The situation started changing in 1972 when Nixon visited China and a Sino-American rapprochement was initiated. Whereas China was now projected in friendlier fashion, Vietnam was still branded hostile and hegemonic. Efforts were made to isolate Vietnam at the international level, when the US had lost the Vietnam War. Although Vietnam was victorious and succeeded in uniting the country in 1975-76, it felt compelled to military intervention in Cambodia in 1978. The ASEAN countries expressed their alarm and supported the genocidal Khmer Rouge against Vietnam. Together with China they supported the US-evolved 'bleeding Vietnam white' policy. Vietnam remained involved in the Cambodian imbroglio for more than a decade, before its withdrawal. Hence the peace process started with 'Jakarta cocktails' and Vietnam whole-heartedly supported ASEAN initiatives in that endeavour.
