Building Web Pages with Composer
Composer helps you create and edit your own web pages and place (or "post") them on the web. Composer looks and acts like a word processing program, and is just as easy to use. Behind the scenes of each page on the web is code called HTML, which stands for Hypertext Markup Language. This name means that HTML is is the computer language used for marking up documents with links in them. The code, called HTML source code, tells the web browser how a page should look and act. You don't need to know how to write HTML code to make a web page. Composer enables you to work in a WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get) environment - just like a word processor - and it automatically generates the HTML code you need to make your page do what you want it to do. The basic elements of a web page are text, pictures, and links. You can put all of these and more on your own pages, and then publish those pages on the web.

Services Web Publishing Guide : Images Images On the web, a still image can be a photograph, illustration, or graphic that is referenced in the HTML code via the image tag. There are many ways to use images on the web.You could scan a photograph of yourself to accompany the text of your curriculum vitae, then resize the scanned image, superimpose a caption, and much more. You could also use a digital camera to directly post pictures of the students in your class to the course web page, or you could create a diagram to illustrate a concept to your students. There are numerous graphics programs available for creating and manipulating images. Adobe Photoshop is probably the most commonly used application for photographs. For illustrations and drawings, Adobe Illustrator and Freehand from Macromedia are two popular programs. A new genre of graphics programs, optimized for working with images destined for the web, have also arrived. Two examples are Fireworks and ImageReady. All such programs are able to save image files using one of the standard compression formats required for the web, GIF or JPEG. Compression The primary concern when creating or modifying images for the web, is the file size of the compressed image. The resolution of an image is the number of pixels (picture elements) that make up its height and width. Everything else constant, the fewer number of pixels, the smaller the image file size. The smaller the image file size, the faster it loads on the web page. Knowing which compression format to use can also lead to smaller file sizes with better image quality.

    Publishing on the Web Is Different
    Summary
    Publishing on the Web is very different from older methods of publication. A Web publication is inherently a general, device-independent and program-independent document with structural markup . The presentation of a document may vary greatly, and it must vary, to allow viewing (or hearing) the same document on a wide variety of devices, ranging from wristwatch monitors to full-size movie screens. There are strong forces, most importantly the conservativeness of most people, which try to impose author-controlled layout on Web documents. However, switch to presentation control by readers is inevitable - and a positive thing.
    HTML = content + structure
    The HTML language was designed to promote worldwide distribution of documents in a device-independent form. It is far from being perfect for the purpose, but it has served well and is suitable for a wide range of documents. It is easy to learn and easy to use. all documents written in good HTML. Admittedly, popular Web browsers are often defective in presenting basic HTML structures properly, and they are far from providing high quality by default and well-customizable by user options. However, attempts to improve the situation by tuning HTML files according to "known" characteristics of popular browsers, or

    Adding Graphics, Colors and Styles
    On the Web, conveying content is the core purpose of a webpage , especially so for the pages of an educational institution like Denison: the single most important reason visitors will return to your page is for current and correct information . Certainly there are some applications in which visual information is critical to the information transfer, for instance in the representation of some arts and artifacts. For most webpages, the addition of graphics, colors and styles should be considered very carefully to enhance, and not distract from, information transfer. However, a visually-pleasing page done properly will make your visitor's research time more enjoyable and give you some personal and creative satisfaction! To create web pages you need some software. Everything you need is available as freeware or shareware, to be found on the internet. You can find all the software mentioned below at my downloads page. TUCOWS, the wonderful site of Scott Swedorsky, has a very nice collection of this internet software and lots more. Editor

    The first thing you need is an editor, a program to write and edit HTML. Preferably a text editor, the best way to go is to entirely write the code yourself. You should understand the consequences of each and every bit of HTML. You may also consider using a text oriented HTML editor. In that case don't use the HTML functions. Use them only after you understand the basics of HTML, learnt in this tutorial.
    A regular word processor cannot be used. No matter how good yours is to write text with. These editors make files which cannot be read with a browser, and often it's quite complicated to change this. Also don't be seduced into using a WYSIWYG editor. These often give only meagre results, are monstrous and slow. The HTML code they produce is veritable garbage.

Your page should include headlines, lists, links, colors, graphics, and at least one table. You might want to create a personal home page with information about yourself. An HTML document is a plain text file. It contains the text that you see on the page, along with special commands called tags that tell the browser how to display the text and what else to put on the page besides text. For example, text can be displayed in bold face by enclosing it between the tags <b> and </b>. If you want the words "This is important" to appear in bold face on the page, like this:

    April 20, 2003
    The Read/Write Web
    The World Wide Web in 2003 is beginning to fulfil the hopes that Tim Berners-Lee had for it over 10 years ago when he created it. The web was never just supposed to be a one-way publishing system, but the first decade of the web has been dominated by a tool which has been read-only - the web browser. The goal now is to convert the web into a two-way system. Ordinary people should be able to write to the web, just as easily as they can browse and read it. In 2001 Dave Winer built a website called The Two Way Web , which articulates a vision of publishing where the "content and the editing environment (are) totally integrated". My vision of the "Read/Write Web" is similar, but I like the read/write metaphor for a couple of reasons. Firstly I like to read books and I enjoy the art of writing. The other reason is that read/write as applied to the computer industry tradionally means "capable of being displayed (read) and modified (written to)". For example a floppy disk drive. So the term "read/write" cuts across both computing and journalism/literature.

      Although most computers come with a built-in speaker, it is of low quality, and audio files will generally not play through it. To play music quality sound files, it requires a sound card and speakers attached to the card. Many notebooks now come with a built-in sound card and small speakers in the notebook, which can be supplemented with plug-in external speakers. Computers sold as multimedia machines usually come with a sound card and speakers included in the price. The earliest sound cards were labelled 8-bit. Then came higher quality 16-bit cards, which refers to the capability to produce high quality, wide audio bandwidth sound. The terminology is confused by new cards with 32 and 64 in their name, which refer to 32-voice and 64-voice synthesizers. Probably the best known maker of sound cards is Creative Labs , maker of SoundBlaster cards.
