UCSB Student Affairs Web Server Publishing Guidelines Publishing Guidelines Web publishers at UCSB Student Affairs are responsible for the content of the pages they publish and are expected to abide by the highest standards of quality and responsibility. Additionally, all publishers should comply with established publishing policies. Concentrate on original work Readers are looking for information on your college, department, or organization. The most valuable contribution you can make to your readers is to publish original work. Collections of pointers to the work of others, while a service that can be valuable, is not a substitute for publishing your own documents and materials. Take advantage of the work of others Cooperation and coordination are two prevailing principles among Web publishers on this campus and throughout the world. Rather than duplicating the work of others, take advantage of it. Incorporate links to the work of others into your own pages, when appropriate. Reducing redundancy lets you concentrate on original offerings. Review your pages Publishing in the Web is just that - publishing. And just like paper publishing, your Web pages should follow the normal procedures of proper review and approval before you publish them.

Before you begin Plan and draw. You wouldn't build a house by running out to Home Depot, buying wood and nails, and starting to hammer away. You would think about your ideal house and then draw blueprints. Do the same with your website. Design a site appropriate for your audience. If you're designing a bulletin about street closings, you probably don't need a lot of graphics or a flash intro.

There are many and varied browsers available for use when navigating the World Wide Web. These pages look briefly at them and their use. There is also a list of some of the more common Browsers available, including links to their relevant WWW sites.
What is a Browser?
A Browser (sometimes referred to as a Client or Viewer ) is a "user agent" or program used to read a hypertext document. Browsers enable you to navigate the Web by displaying information to you in the required format. It is the job of your browser to allow you to follow whatever links you desire and return the information to you in the appropriate format, whether that be as a text document, a telnet session, a usenet session etc. Not all browsers support every format, but often a browser will allow you to configure helper applications to do the required jobs automatically. Browsers are available to run on most computer platforms which access the Web. They can be graphical or text based. Top
Affect of Browsers on Web Publishing
Browsers can have an effect on Web Publishers in a number of ways, for example browsers can display text and graphics differently, some handle tables and forms and others don't. There are numerous features that can vary from one browser to another. When designing a web page a professional web publisher needs to consider the impact of the HTML used on their audience.

Publishing Web Pages on the NT Web Server
December 2001 Princeton University makes available several Web servers to enable the University community to publish Web pages . The server called web provides a secure environment for offices and departments to publish their pages on an NT server. (Personal pages and all graduate and undergraduate student pages should be stored on the Unix system , not on the NT web server.) A Princeton NetID with an associated NT account and password are required in order to use this service. Such users are called Princeton users below. If you need to set up a secure web site that must be accessed by people outside Princeton (for a research project, for example), you can establish NT-only NetIDs for such people. Those who have such NetIDS would be able to log in to view pages on the secure web site but would not have any other privileges on Princeton systems.

    About Runtime
The next generation of open-source web applications will be based on Java and XML. Because Java can run in any operating system, there is a huge pool of developers building new web technologies with it. This means that the rate of technological growth is astonishing, with new developments and standards constantly emerging. XML is fuelling this growth by making data as portable as code, and previously seperate systems are becoming increasingly easy to integrate through common XML standards. Java and XML are now maturing as particular technologies stabilise and become more reliable, and standards gain industry momentum. Here at Runtime we have been using, researching, and teaching Java as individuals for many years; and we are now starting to use it as a commercial development environment. This document summarises some of the core technologies that the open-source community should be aware of. Joe Faith , September 2000

    Introduction
Table of Contents Introduction Overview How AxKit Works Mapping XML Files to Style Sheets ... Conclusion One of XML's major benefits to web developers is that it is a standard way to separate data from presentation, and create a consistent templating system for a web site. Yet that promise is yet to be fully realized by many, due to the immature state of XML tool support, especially in authoring. An important part of using XML for web publishing is content delivery . Although XML-to-HTML conversion is partially possible in browsers such as Internet Explorer, the reality is that HTML or XHTML will be served from web servers for a long time to come. This means server-side XML transformation is the most viable option for publishing with XML today.

    Publishing on the Web
The factors to consider in publishing mathematics-intensive documents on the Web are the same as publishing any other content online: Who is your intended audience? What browser do they use? What is their connection speed? What other software is available to them? The answers to these questions will influence your choice of Web publishing tools and viewing options.
    Your Web Publishing Options
With Scientific WorkPlace Scientific Word , and Scientific Notebook , you can create mathematics-intensive information for the web in several ways:
    • Create .tex files. You can create your document as a .tex file, just as you would create any other Scientific WorkPlace, Scientific Word, or Scientific Notebook document. No special action is required. You can then place the file directly on the Web. When the file is saved to a reader's Scientific WorkPlace, Scientific Word, or Scientific Notebook installation, any mathematics in the file is live.
If you have Scientific WorkPlace, Scientific Word, or Scientific Notebook, view a .tex file on our website
    • Create HTML files.
