Common Web Publishing Problems
Date: Nov 21, 2002 Section: Tutorials :: Publishing Author: Thomas Shinder Printable Version Rating: 4/5 - 12 Votes Web Publishing continues to be one of the most enticing features of ISA Server 2000. The Web Publishing Wizard makes it a virtual no-brainer to publish internal network Web sites. But sometimes the simplicity is only skin deep. Check out part 1 of this two part article on common Web Publishing problems and make your publishing woes fade away! Common Web Publishing Problems
Part 1: Destination Sets
By Thomas W Shinder, M.D.
We can't get enough of Web Publishing Rules around here! Why? Web Publishing Rules allow you publish Web servers on the internal network or on a DMZ located behind the ISA Server and make them available to users on the Internet. Sure, you could use Server Publishing Rules to publish Web servers on your internal network, but there are several reasons why you might want to use Web Publishing Rules instead of Server Publishing Rules. These advantages include:
  • Publishing multiple Web sites with a single external IP address
  • HTTP Content inspection
  • Redirect requests based on path contained in the URL
  • Terminate an SSL request at the ISA Server
  • Bridge SSL requests
  • Redirect HTTP requests as FTP requests

    Web Publishing Guidelines
    Introduction
    Who should read these guidelines?
This document is intended for any person who publishes or modifies Web documents on the Denison webserver. It is also important for anyone who oversees or approves written or visual content published on the Denison website. Finally, it is important for any person who advises others about Web publishing methodology, technology, or techniques. Those who should consider reading this document are:
    • Denison division heads, department chairs, office supervisors, and organization leadership. Official Denison office, department, project or organization pagemaintainers. Denison users who wish to publish effective, high-quality and usable websites. Library personnel, Computer Support Service Technicians (SSTs), Instructional Technologists (ITs) and other Computing Services staff who provide support to Denison computer users with Web publishing tasks.

Why do we have these guidelines?

    43. World Wide Web Federal Consortium - II. C. Web Publishing
agencies need to consider the new paradigm the web presents in determining how and what to publish. Most browsers recognize some level of HTML and ASCII text
    http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/oa/fedwebguide/web.htm
II. C. Web publishing Appropriateness Agencies need to decide what types of material should be published on the web site. The web offers new opportunities for including electronic materials and resources never before available. Instead of publishing only documents, agencies can publish movies, sound, software, and electronic data files, and provide interactive experiences. Web publishing may compliment an existing paper publishing process. However, agencies need to consider the new paradigm the web presents in determining how and what to publish. Humans interface with computers in a very different way than they do with paper and ink documents. Mere conversion of paper and ink documents to HTML may not be useful to customers. In addition, hypertext makes many paper and ink conventions obsolete. Because of the lower resolution on monitors, many users are not interested in reading long documents online but will print them and read them offline. Content to be read online requires authors to write short paragraphs using clear and concise prose. Content Delivery Agencies need to establish a strategy for content delivery that provides users with choices. Some content should be viewed, read, or browsed online while other content can best be made available in downloadable files. The choice of file formats used should be based on the following considerations: (1) the intended use of the material by the target audience; (2) the accessibility of the format to the target audience; (3) the type of material; and (4) the level of effort required to convert or prepare the material in the format.

  • Make sure that your home directory has the appropriate permissions by logging into Unix and typing the commands below. The group and other permissions must have at least execute permissions set. Read access to your home directory is not required. For example: % chmod g-s ~ % chmod og+xs ~ % ls -ld ~ drwxsx 24 guest guest 3072 Jun 3 10:51 /home/a/guest The permissions fields (the section with the drwx...) may not look identical to whats above. All that is important is that you do the chmod command exactly as it is listed there. That will allow people to access files and directories in your home directory that have world read and/or execute permissions (an r-x or x in the last part of the permissions field). Use chmod go-rwx filename to make filename unaccessible by other people.

Once you are done designing your Web pages, it is important that you cross-check that your pages work in different browsers and on different platforms.
    • As mentioned already, the Web browsers have the job of interpreting HTML and displaying the formatted content. As such, different browsers may interpret HTML slightly differently. It is important, therefore, to check your Web pages in at least Just as the same Web page may display differently in two browsers, so too might it display differently on two different platforms (mainly Windows and Macintosh), even within the same browser. You should periodically check the page in different browsers on different platforms. Several web-based utilities exist for browser and platform compatibility. See, for example:

    Guidelines for UMHS Web Publishing
The U-M Health System web site , managed by the Department of Public Relations and Marketing Communications (PRMC) , promotes our services and offers the community a valuable health resource. There is an internal site for our U-M Health System employees only, and an external site for employees and the rest of the community. PRMC and MCIT have gone to great lengths to come up with a versatile design that serves as the signature of the site. As such, Health System web designers are required to incorporate the key elements in those pages that are available to and intended for external audiences. Departmental or program web designers who want a link to a newly-created site listed on the external home page must use the form Add A Link to the UMHS Site . The request will be forwarded to PRMC web coordinators, who will determine where the link should be listed. Before linking to a page, PRMC will ensure that the content of the page is suitable for external audiences and that it adheres to the design and content requirements spelled out in these guidelines. Direct any comments or questions about logo or terminology usage to PRMC at ask-umhs@med.umich.edu.

Additionally, all publishers should comply with established publishing policies. Concentrate on original work Readers are looking for information on your college, department, or organization. The most valuable contribution you can make to your readers is to publish original work. Collections of pointers to the work of others, while a service that can be valuable, is not a substitute for publishing your own documents and materials. Take advantage of the work of others Cooperation and coordination are two prevailing principles among Web publishers on this campus and throughout the world. Rather than duplicating the work of others, take advantage of it. Incorporate links to the work of others into your own pages, when appropriate. Reducing redundancy lets you concentrate on original offerings. Review your pages Publishing in the Web is just that - publishing. And just like paper publishing, your Web pages should follow the normal procedures of proper review and approval before you publish them.

Independence Day The book by Richard Ford , about a long uneventful weekend in the life of Frank Bascombe, a divorced real estate salesman in Haddam, New Jersey, won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature: "Unmarried men in their forties, if we don't subside entirely into the landscape, often lose important credibility and can even attract unwholesome attention in a small, conservative community. And in Haddam, in my new circumstances, I felt I was perhaps becoming the personage I least wanted to be and, in the years since my divorce, had feared being: the suspicious bachelor, the man whose life has no mystery, the graying, slightly jowly, slightly too tanned and trim middle-ager, driving around town in a cheesy '58 Chevy ragtop polished to a squeak, always alone on balmy summer nights, wearing a faded yellow polo shirt and green suntans, elbow over the window top, listening to progressive jazz, while smiling and pretending to have everything under control, when in fact there was nothing to control."
