61. Stoked On Tortola - Surfing The British Virgin Islands
The island s geography contributes much to its surf character, offering a Web Page design by Island Publishing, Road Town, Tortola, british virgin islands.
http://www.bviwelcome.com/articles/surfing/
Go to the BVI Welcome On-Line the Authoritative Web Site for the BVI
Reprinted from the BVI Welcome Tourist Guide - Vol. 33, No. 1 Dec/Jan 2003/04 Surfers call it stoke. It's the feeling you get when your emotions assume control of your expressions. Stoke makes you whoop, hoot or holler; or it can make you wave your arms over your head and cheer. Stoke is when you peer down from the ridge road to view peeling waves marching onto the beach or around a point. Or when a friend rips down a wave exiting in a cloud of kick-out spray. The best stoke is when it's your wave and you tuck in for a down-the-line ride, throw in a few turns and flop back onto your board for the paddle back out, glowing inside because that was one of your best-ever wave rides.
There is a lot of stoke on Tortola's North Shore. An enviable combination of great surf and plenty of surf beaches makes Tortola one of the surfing jewels of the Caribbean. The island's geography contributes much to its surf character, offering a multiple of surfing options. Couple this with the B.V.I.'s laid back charm and you have a winning combination. You can find better surfing breaks in the Caribbean, but you can't find a nicer surf destination.
Josiah's offers lots for everyone to ride, and as an added bonus, the sandbar is continually in motion delivering different surf. "I pretty much surf the right," says Tim Jones. "Occasionally the left is better, but the right from the peak at the centre of the bay is my ride." Tim lives up the road and can see the break from his house. If J.C. Pierce is the mayor of Apple Bay, then Tim is landlord at Josiah's. A father of four and a busy computer consultant, Tim still finds the time to surf Josiah's almost every day it's working.
