Recreation is any activity which affords opportunity for renewal of mind, body and spirit through pursuits which bring personal enjoyment – including participation in some forms of sport. Games and sport have been viewed as popular forms of recreation, but recreation need not imply sport – or any physical activity for that matter. However, sport is a universally accepted recreational opportunity for spectators (tourists and residents alike). This distinction is necessary as it helps to determine the future focus and mechanisms necessary for the development sport in the Territory.

The BVI has competed in such games as: the Central American and Caribbean Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games, Leeward Islands Cricket Matches, CARIFTA Games, Regional Volleyball and Basketball tournaments, and the Olympic Games, in Spain and Atlanta. We are reputed to have several athletes who rank in the top (20) twenty in the world as juniors. The BVI Amateur Athletic Committee and the Olympic Committee have both done well to promote track and field events in particular; the sport associations such as the Amateur Softball Association, the Bike Federation and Cricket Association are well established.

British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands are made up of about 50 islands and islets. The four largest islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada. Tortola is the largest island with an area of 21 square miles. The other larger islands are Anegada at 15 square miles, Virgin Gorda at 8 square miles and Jost Van Dyke at 3 square miles. Smaller islands include Great Tobago, Peter, Cooper, Norman, Guana, Beef, Great Thatch and Marina Cay. The beaches are lovely and the water inviting. The British Virgin Islands are among the world's loveliest cruising grounds for charters and yachts.
Tortola
Tortola is the largest and most populated, around 13,000 residents, of the British islands. The island is 12 miles by 3 miles. Tourism is still fairly new in Tortola so the villages are more subdued rather than resort like. Tortola is home to the capital

TORTOLA
J.R. O'Neal Botanical Gardens are a cool and peaceful refuge located in the center of Road Town. The beautiful 4-acre garden includes a lush array of indigenous and exotic tropical plants. Main Street is Road Town's primary shopping street. The narrow road, which runs through the center of town, retains a great deal of West Indian charm with its colorful wooden and stone buildings, many dating to early in the century. Sights include the Sir Olva George's Plaza and the 19th century Post Office. Queen Elizabeth Park is a small community park bordering the western side of Road Harbour in Road Town. Sage Mountain National Park , at 1,780 feet, Sage Mountain is the B.V.I.'s highest point. The park is laid out with graveled paths, and although it is not a rain forest in the true sense (it receives less than 100 inches f rain a year), the lush area possesses many of the characteristics of one. The North Shore Shell Museum in Carrot Bay has shells, shell craft, traditional wood boats and other examples of local culture on display and for sale.

This chain of some 60 islands and cays, known as the British Virgin Islands (B.V.I.), has a distinctly nautical flavour. While some cruise ships visit the islands, you're more likely to see yachts. Sailors enjoy constant trade winds, short distances between islands, beautiful views and many sheltered coves where they can drop anchor. These are considered some of the finest sailing waters in the world. This is also a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers with beautiful the reefs, wrecks and clear waters off the islands to explore. In addition to the spectacular sailing waters and coral reefs that surround them, the British Virgins have calm and tidy towns, luxurious accommodations and gourmet dining. For many, it's the perfect island getaway. Tortola Virgin Gorda Jost van Dyke Anegada and Peter Island are the largest and most frequented islands. The natural beauty of these islands is spectacular. The volcanic origins of these islands produce contrasting colour tones of verdant land, turquoise sea and radiant white beaches. Tortola (population 15,000) is a peaceful refuge of tropical, mountainous landscapes, seafarer's appeal and a distinct West Indian flavor. Tortola is serene, seductive, and free from crowds; buildings here can't be taller than the palm trees. The lack of direct flights from the U.S. and Europe restricts the number of visitors, but rewards those who take the extra "leg" with an island they very nearly have to themselves.

issue 263 - January 1995 The new prison being built in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) looks out onto glistening blue tropical waters, white beaches and a string of small green islands. Unlike the new $20 million government building in the capital, or the giant new cruise-ship dock, this building does not reflect the noble path of ‘progress’ which the people of these tiny islands are supposed to be experiencing. It represents the shameful baggage which comes with it. Sadly there is a pressing need for a prison. American-style gun-crime has seeped into the country with devastating consequences for a community that 10 years ago scarcely knew such evils. The BVI’s population is distributed between four islands (there are 36 in all) though most people live on the largest, Tortola. The islands are self-governing though not independent from Britain, whose resident Governor acts as representative of the Crown. Most people enjoy a quality of life uncommon in the Caribbean. The use of the US currency and the steady growth in the yachting industry and up-market hotels have combined to create a tourism economy envied by others in the region. As the major source of employment, tourism has attracted an increasing number of immigrants seeking work. Political power lies with a small group of individuals some of whom have been in and out of power for many years. The Chief Minister Lavitty Stoutt of the Virgin Islands Party has this time held office since 1987 when his predecessor, Cyrill Romney, resigned in the islands’ biggest known political scandal. Romney had been closely linked to a local trust company alleged to have been laundering large amounts of ‘dirty’ money. His name was subsequently cleared and he is now Leader of the Opposition in the single-chamber Legislative Council.

Comprising just 36 islands in the Caribbean, only 16 of which are inhabited, the British Virgin Islands are about 80 km / 960 miles east of Puerto Rico and adjacent to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The principal islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.
The sub-tropical islands are largely rolling hills and beaches with a very temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 26°C - 31°C (79°F - 89°F) in the summer to 22°C - 28°C (72°F - 82°F) in the winter and rainfall monthly average of 100 mm. The total population of the British Virgin Islands is estimated at 19,000.
History
In 1666 British planters took over control of the island group from the original Dutch settlers. The islands attained the status of British colony, and remained part of the Leeward Islands from 1872 until 1956, when the British Virgin Islands became a separately administered entity. To preserve its close economic ties with the U.S. Virgin Islands, the group did not join the 1958-1962 West Indies Federation of British Virgin Islands. In 1967, a new constitution provided for a ministerial system of government headed by a Chief Minister. The island group remains under British control today; however, in order to protect the close economic interests with the USVI, they continue to use the US Dollar as the official currency.
The first European settlers arrived in the mid-17th century. All indications suggest that there was no serious Spanish settlement in the islands. There is evidence to suggest however, that there may have been a Spanish emplacement to protect their copper mine interests on Virgin Gorda. A hardy group of Dutchmen are believed to have constructed a fort at the West End of Tortola, but their stay here was short-lived as well. They were soon replaced by British settlers, and in 1672, The BVI was annexed by Britain and administered by the Government of the Leeward Islands. Although the islands' hillsides were steep and rocky, the English quickly set up plantations to grow cotton and sugar. Sugar eventually became king and by the end of the 18th century, sugar, molasses and rum were The BVI's main exports.
