Virgin Islands Music
In the Caribbean, African rhythms were fused with European elements creating new Creole musical forms that continue to develop into unique musical expressions today. In the Virgin Islands you can hear Caribbean rhythms, intoxicating steel drums, high-energy dance music, spiritual hymns, soca, reggae, blues, salsa, meringue, jazz, classical and an assortment of other music genres. While a variety of music types are played in the Virgin Islands, it is calypso, soca, reggae and steel pan beats that are the sounds of the Caribbean must often heard. Calypso Historically, calypso music can be traced to the days of slavery. It was a means of communication and a vent to the strains of oppression. Calypso has it's roots on the island of Trinidad. Present in Trinidad during French and Spanish occupation, calypso did not take root until English occupation. With English as the common language Calypso could now be understood by the entire population. Calypsonians are respected as news carriers and what they sing is considered to be truthful interpretations. Calypso is most famously known for expressing political commentary through satire and sarcasm. Today Calypso has evolved into two types, the traditional informative Calypso and a new dance hall type of calypso music.

British Virgin Islands journey a ‘science teacher’s delight’
BY VINCENT TODARO
Staff Writer
East Brunswick’s Jeff Bravman with “Today” host Matt Lauer in Necker Island.
EAST BRUNSWICK — If some men think taking a vacation with Jimmy Buffett and three super models is what dreams are made of, that’s exactly what Jeffrey Bravman did recently. The fourth-grade teacher from East Brunswick’s Frost School took off Feb. 12 for the trip of a lifetime — a blind journey determined by the folks at NBC as part of the "Today" show. Bravman, accompanied by his wife, Sylvia, ultimately wound up on Necker Island, one of the British Virgin Islands, for what he called "a science teacher’s delight." Bravman won the trip by prevailing in an NBC essay contest, but had no idea where he and his wife would be taken until he got there. When he left Newark Liberty International Airport that morning, all he could do was hope.

Caribbean > British Virgin Islands Lying some 60 miles east of Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands are chiefly volcanic in origin, with the exception of Anegada, a coral and limestone atoll. Most of the islands are grouped around Sir Francis Drake Channel, named after that famous English sea dog. Although there are over 50 islands, rocks and cays dotting the sparkling blue water, many of them are uninhabited. Whether the visitor arrives by air or by sea, he will be overwhelmed by the surrounding beauty and sense of solitude. The British Virgin Islands cover 59 square miles and have a population of 18,000.

Pros
The LOCAL WEST INDIAN PEOPLE and the super intelligent tropical fish
Cons Anti-tourism, language barriers, high-priced lodging, and the local Rasta Law (anti-Rastafarian Law this law sucks!) Full Review Nature's Little Secrets indeed! The BVI is an eclectic mix of 26 small islands that include everything from local fungi and scratch music and a variety of patois dialects, to an annual week-long Carnival/Festival and the rare crack addict wandering the streets asking for money. What's patois ("pah-twah") you ask? The local English dialect, of course. Just try and understand it, too. I lived there a year and I still didn't understand most of the patois I heard even the watered down versions customized for my ears. The only atoll in the BVI is Anegada, which has about 400 residents on 13 square miles. Anegada's highest point is 14 feet above sea level avoid the hurricane season. The remaining islands are steep and volcanic, and are rather intimidating to negotiate by vehicle if you're not used to driving on the left side of the road. Remember, this is a British Territory. The total population in the BVI is about 18,000 or so. When you're on some of the smaller islands, like Jost Van Dyke, or Peter Island, you'll think you might be the only person around for miles, and you'll probably be right.
