English 220-221-222 is a three-course sequence required of all English majors. The sequence is meant to introduce new and prospective majors to the full range of literature in English, and the various methods and modes of literary history, criticism and theory required to understand it. The first term will cover English literature from the earliest example ("Caedmon's Hymn") to Shakespeare. The second term will cover English literature from the late renaissance of the early seventeenth century to the Augustan period of the late-18th century. The third quarter will begin with Blake and the Romantics and end with postmodern fiction and poetry. The whole sequence will provide students with skills needed to succeed in subsequent English courses, and the knowledge needed to construct a program to suit their interests.
