    Introduction
    The Course
The course thus offers both certain compulsory elements and opportunities for individuals to choose from a varied menu. The compulsory elements, in which everyone participates, foster a strong sense of intellectual community (there are normally around ten students taking the M.Phil). The optional elements permit students to develop their own interests, and to focus their whole scheme of work either more sharply or more adventurously, as they please. This combination of intellectual community with individual flexibility is one of the great strengths of the course. Meanwhile, throughout the nine months, students will be pursuing individual research on a topic of their choice. This work will be supported by frequent consultation with their personal supervisor, and, during the first two terms, by classes on research skills, resources, and methodologies. In March students will submit a brief written project (of around 2,000 words) - a piece of research or methodological study arising from their research topic and directly relevant to it. This will be assessed on a pass/fail basis, and will be useful preparation for the writing of a dissertation of between 10,000 and 15,000 words, which will be the sole focus of the student's work between April and June. The mark for the dissertation will count for 50% of the M. Phil. as a whole.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH 100- thru 400-Level Literature Course Descriptions FALL 2003 100 INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY STUDY This course might be called “How to Be an English Major.” It offers tips on how to make the transition from the high-school study of literature to college-level study. The class will read a relatively small number of poems, short stories, and plays, exploring a number of critical approaches to each. Emphasis will be placed on close reading of short passages, the historical contexts of literature, the way genre affects our reading practices, and the criteria for persuasive interpretations. Students will practice their critical skills in a number of short papers. TEXTS: Vary according to section. 101 INTRODUCTION TO POETRY English 101 provides students with a foundation in the methods of detailed reading and analysis essential to an understanding of poetry and, more broadly, to the study of literature. It provides students with an understanding of and experience in the ways we write about poetry. The course also addresses the basics of prosody, poetic devices (such as diction, metaphor, image, tone), and major verse forms (such as the sonnet, elegy, ode, ballad, dramatic monologue, free verse). The selection of poems from a range of literary periods and movements reflects both the continuity and variation in the history of British and American poetry and provides a sampling of works from the sixteenth to the later twentieth centuries.

Modern Theatre and the London Stage
    Tutor: Dr Alison Mark
This course examines some of the key modern dramatists and movements of the late nineteenth and twentieth century theatre in Britain and Europe. It aims to develop critical understanding of major plays, many of which have had an important influence on both European and American drama. The study of theatre as a performance art will be emphasised throughout the course. Theatre visits cover both plays studied on the course and exciting new productions in London. Each session will involve a variety of teaching methods, with an emphasis on group discussions, workshops and student activities. The course will look at the different crafts which are involved in each production, and, after theatre visits, examine the way in which directing, acting, sets, lighting, costumes, make-up and other elements contribute to the overall success of each performance. The intention is to invite performers and guest lecturers to some of the sessions and the course includes a back stage visit to a major London theatre.
