INTRODUCTION
Moreover, because the bibliography of literature studies is so large and well-developed, the present guide can hardly scratch the surface of useful reference works and cannot even begin to account for the myriad of monographs and journals available.Rather than strive for anything resembling completeness, therefore, it highlights the sources you might use first, both because they represent a particular type of resource and, in that they will provide you with a selective bibliography of your topic, because they save you the legwork of using Tripod and indexes to assemble your own preliminary bibliography. With a few exceptions, all the items listed here are at Haverford, where you will find, as suggested above, many other useful sources as well.Bryn Mawr's Canaday and Swarthmore's McCabe Library will have many of these same works and others like them; use Tripod to identify works that may be at the other two colleges.

FACULTY

MISSION STATEMENT
Mission of WBU's Division of Languages and Literature
Th e Division of Languages and Literature plays a vital role in Wayland's liberal arts offerings by striving to stimulate in and out of the classroom a free and responsible exploration of truth (both actual and literary). English and foreign language professors understand and promote the values of education that offer students the opportunity to experience practical knowledge as well as a "knowledge worth possessing for what it is, and not merely for what it does." (Newman)
Our professors are more interested in what our students become than what they are when they arrive as freshmen. To that end, our students are guided in the improvement of their language skills and led to appreciate and understand literature as an outgrowth and interpretation of life.
The ability to read intelligently, think critically, write coherently (with a minimum of errors), and express ideas verbally in English and another language is at the heart of a liberal arts curriculum. Each of our traditional degree programs (B.A., B.S., B.M., B.B.A., and B.S.I.S.) requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in English, as follows:
  • ENGL 1301 Composition and Rhetoric
  • ENGL 1302 Composition and Reading
  • ENGL 2303 World Literature
  • and one of the following:
    • ENGL 2301 English Literature
    • ENGL 2302 American Literature
(SAT, ACT, and Advance Placement credit may be earned prior to enrolling.)
