Course Objectives:
a) Learn about the history of British Literature. This will involve absorbing a number of different kinds of facts, including aspects of British political, social, economic, and religious history of the period. Even more important, the "history of British Literature" describes the ways that writers have understood their own place in a tradition of letters in England, Europe, and the world. At once, we will discover, writers are responding to events in their own time and place and to a long history of writing, from the Bible and Greek and Latin literature through to the English writers that wrote before them. Most of this information will come from the extensive introductions to the Norton Anthology of Literature that have been assigned as course readings.

Course Objectives: a) Learn about the history of British Literature b) Develop skills in the critical analysis of literature c) Develop skills in communicating your knowledge of literature Assessment: Students will be assessed to determine their understanding of the readings, their ability to write coherently and incisively on literature, and their ability to do basic research on matters of literature and literary history. Evaluation will take the following forms: a) Reading Responses. We will use BlackBoard ( http://courses.missouri.edu ) to organize your weekly reading responses. One third of the class will be assigned a Sunday due date (9 pm); one third of the class a Tuesday due date (9pm); and one third of the class a Thursday due date (9pm). In your posting, you will be asked to contribute:
  • one question intended for class discussion on the reading assigned that day a one-paragraph response to a previously posted question (for either that class or the previous class)
  • Your questions should be geared towards interpretation rather than to the literal facts of the text(s) under consideration. Both your questions and your paragraphs must demonstrate that you have read and reflected on the assigned text. In your questions and responses, your focus should not be primarily on what you liked or disliked, although that may be relevant to your larger point. (20% of final grade)

Preliminary Remarks: ENGL 230 is an overview of a large range of challenging materialthe foundation upon which modern literature in English is built. Much of it may be new to you, and many of the texts reflect assumptions and ideas that seem strange to a 20th-century audience. For these reasons, several remarks are in order.
    1) While nominally an "Introductory" course, ENGL 230 is READING INTENSIVE, and can be frustrating at times. The material covered is complex and challenging, the pace necessarily frenetic. Invariably, one week or another we will be dealing with a topic/author that is hard for you to get a handle on, or that you simply do not enjoy. When this occurs, DO NOT DESPAIR!! We will soon be moving on to something totally different. Also keep in mind that BECAUSE the course is an overview, you are not expected to master ANY of the material as thoroughly as in an upper-division course with a narrower focus. This does NOT mean that you do not need to read carefully. It DOES mean that you should not torture yourself if the details of a given text prove difficult to grasp. We are looking for the broad picture, not the close-up; the idea is to provide you with a sense of the way in which English literatureand English perceptions of what literature
