The Norman and Charlotte Strouse Edition of the Writings of Thomas Carlyle . The editors explain in an accompanying sheet that the phrasing on the dust jacket is in error: there it reads "The Norman and Charlotte Strouse Edition of the Works of Thomas Carlyle." "Writings" is clearly preferable to "Works," though also slightly misleading in that it too seems to imply completeness. In fact, the edition will yield only eight volumes, a mere fraction of Carlyle's total output. But small favors are favors still, and we can rejoice that even a curtailed edition of Carlyle is being undertaken in these latter days.
, ed. Michael J. Goldberg, Joel J. Brattin, and Mark Engel (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1993; pp. ciii + 519; $45). It seems only fair to point out that the present reviewer is a member of the advisory board for this edition, even though he played no actual role in the editing or production of the work. Nevertheless, for that reason, I will forbear commenting on this work beyond noting its main features.

Oxford History of English Literature , the OHEL to generations of graduate students, has been going on for so long now that one may be pardoned for being surprised that it is still going on, even as one welcomes what appears to be the penultimate volume in the series. That volume is Alan Horsman's The Victorian Novel ("Oxford History of English Literature," vol. 13; Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1990; pp. viii + 465; $59).
Oxford History of English Literature has by now gone through such changes of scheme and division and has appeared piecemeal over such a long span of time and has been carried on under such a number of different editors and contributors that its own publication history is at least as complicated as the literary history contained in many of the individual volumes. The story of the making of the OHEL would certainly be worthy of a full chronicle should anyone at Oxford ever feel equal to it. An account of the life and times of this project would reveal a good deal about changing academic fashion and would also say something to the question of whether an enterprise that had its roots in the 1940s can still be the same half a century on. It might even have something to say to what is now, but surely what was not

    English
For those students who choose to major in literature and writing, SDSU offers a number of programs. Students may major in English for the single subject teaching credential, which can lead into a high school teaching career. Students may also major in English for the liberal arts degree. This program will ready students for graduate study in English, or prepare them for the many careers that require skills in critical thinking and writing. For those students who are interested in the literature of various cultures around the world, SDSU offers the comparative literature degree program. In addition, the English Department offers the certificate in children's literature to both undergraduate and graduate students. This program requires students to complete six courses beyond the curriculum for their major, selected in consultation with an advisor. It has been designed for teachers, librarians, parents, or anyone interested in exploring the quality and nature of literature for children.
Program Overview Literature is explored both from the broad view of different cultures, genres, and periods, and through a more focused study in a particular area. All students must take courses in Shakespeare, British literature before 1800, British literature after 1800, American literature, comparative literature, and upper-division or advanced writing. The English major also allows for several classes chosen by students as electives.

    Shannon Hill
    Essay 3
"The Lie" and the Tradition of British Literature
For my final essay I would like to focus on "The Lie" by Sir Walter Raleigh and where it fits within the tradition of British Literature. Because "The Lie" is from the Renaissance, which falls neatly between the medieval period and the eighteenth century, it can be viewed as a transitional work leading from the middle ages to the eighteenth century. If one compares "The Lie" to Everyman , from the medieval period, and "A Modest Proposal", by Jonathan Swift, from the eighteenth century, I believe that a transition can be seen taking place. Everyman is focused on life in general. "The Lie" focuses on the individual and "A Modest Proposal focuses on politics. Other changes that can be seen progressing through the different periods come from the different writing styles. Everyman is written on a personal, emotional level. "The Lie" is written in a straightforward manner, while "A Modest Proposal" is ironic and satirical. Because of these progressions, I think "The Lie" can be seen as a transitional work. In Everyman , the author focuses on life in general in the line "How that all creatures be to me unkind,/ Living without dread in worldly prosperity./ Of ghostly sight the people be so blind,/ Drowned in sin, they know me not for their God./ In worldly riches is all their mind:"(pp. 365) This line is spoken by God and is focusing on the way humans generally live their lives. He is saying that humans are only interested in worldly possessions and are blind when it comes to spirituality. When they die, all of the emphasis which they have placed on worldly prosperity will not amount to anything because they will leave all of it behind. The only thing that will be of value upon their death is the salvation which is granted to them by God through their faith and repenting of their sins.
