not Victorian biography or modern biography of Victorians) has been an academic growth industry for the past several decades. The key word is "self"; the key issue is how that self is presented, or even created, out of the raw materials of the "facts" of the autobiographer's life. The favored texts are: Carlyle's Sartor Resartus , Newman's Apologia , Mill's Autobiography , Ruskin's Praeterita , Pater's "Child in the House," and closing out the age, Gosse's Father and Son . Not all are used by all students of autobiography and frequently others are added, from Harriet Martineau to William Hale White and W. B. Yeats, especially when the focus is not exclusively Victorian (see, for example, Carl Dawson's Prophets of Past Time on autobiography from 1880 to 1920, reviewed here in the March 1989 issue). But it is fair to say that this half-dozen forms the nucleus of the contemporary study of Victorian autobiography. Probably because of the domination of these certain select texts the issues of "self," "self-creation," "fact versus fiction," "truth and imagination," and the like loom so large. For all of these key works come from greatly gifted and greatly introspective literary masters; and three of the six are not narrowly speaking autobiographies at all, but fictions of one sort or other. Hence many of the questions raised are those that are raised in the discussion of fiction. Hence, too, the increasing modern disposition to see Victorian autobiography as more closely related to fiction than to biography proper. As its title suggests, some of this disposition is evident in Heather Henderson's

"This book studies the historical emergence of a certain kind of politicized crowd with an originality and a brilliance that will make it the definitive work on the crowd in nineteenth-century literature."John Kucich, author of and The Power of Lies: Transgression in Victorian Fiction. "This book will spark a great deal of debate, and debate of a far-reaching and desirable kindperhaps even the sort of debate that has followed the similarly ambitious, paradigm-shifting work of people like D.A. Miller and Mary Poovey." Bruce Robbins, author of The Servant's Hand: English Fiction from Below and Secular Vocation: Intellectuals, Professionalism, Culture "What a pleasure to read a skilled literary critic who has not only studied classic literary representations of crowds with sensitivity but also grounded them firmly in the actual political history that nurtured and received those representations! John Plotz has built a bridge where only slippery stepping stones existed."Charles Tilly, author of Popular Contention in Great Britain, 1758-1834

Genre: British Literature Reviewed by Rochelle Caviness - February 11, 2002 I happen to like reading Victorian Literature, the problem is, most of these books are printed in such a tiny font that they are impossible for even Superman to read, let alone for anyone with a visual impairment - even when using magnification devices! It was with great pleasure, therefore, that I discovered that Seedy Press' British Literature CD contained a cornucopia of Victorian Literature - all in plain text. Being in plain text, I have the option of enlarging the text to a comfortable size, or to read the text using a screen reading program. While this CD contains a wealth of Victorian Literature, this is only one part of its vast collection. This CD contains over 720 books, and most of the authors in this collection died before 1931, although some lived longer. The authors resided throughout the British Empire, including Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Australia, and England.

"Nilsen's work, surveying humor in British literature from the 14th through the 17th centuries, is scholarly and exhaustive. Combining formidable scholarship with extensive bibliographical references, Nilsen presents material chronologically by the author's year of birth.... Strongly recommended for upper-division undergraduates, graduates, researchers, and bibliographers, as well as academic and research libraries." Choice
Humor began in British literature during the Middle Ages, when Chaucer developed the storytelling tradition along with the ironies that resulted from the juxtaposition of people from different classes and points of view. Shakespeare later developed vernacular and street humor in his comedies, festive humor in his romances and histories, and dark humor in his tragedies. During the Restoration, Congreve established the Comedy of Manners. This book overviews scholarship in humor in British literature from the Middle Ages through the seventeenth century.
The volume begins with an introductory essay on the origins of British humor in the Middle Ages. Chapters then examine British literary humor during particular centuries. Each chapter begins with an overview of humor during that time period. Entries for individual authors follow, with each entry discussing the role of humor in the author's work and providing a bibliography of modern studies. Entries are arranged chronologically to show the development of humor over time, while an index allows alphabetical access to individual authors.

    100 INTRODUCTION TO LITERARY STUDY
This course might be called "How to Be an English Major." It offers tips on how to make the transition from the high-school study of literature to college-level study. The class will read a relatively small number of poems, short stories, and plays, exploring a number of critical approaches to each. Emphasis will be placed on close reading of short passages, the historical contexts of literature, the way genre affects our reading practices, and the criteria for persuasive interpretations. Students will practice their critical skills in a number of short papers. TEXTS: Vary according to section. 101 INTRODUCTION TO POETRY English 101 provides students with a foundation in the methods of detailed reading and analysis essential to an understanding of poetry and, more broadly, to the study of literature. It provides students with an understanding of and experience in the ways we write about poetry. The course also addresses the basics of prosody, poetic devices (such as diction, metaphor, image, tone), and major verse forms (such as the sonnet, elegy, ode, ballad, dramatic monologue, free verse). The selection of poems from a range of literary periods and movements reflects both the continuity and variation in the history of British and American poetry and provides a sampling of works from the sixteenth to the later twentieth centuries.
