Links FISH TALES Dunbar Gage Gerhard Hearn ... 2004 Catch Record AWARDS Trophies 2001 Trophies 2002 Trophies 2003 PHOTOS Historical Photos Catch Photos 2002 Catch Photos 2003 The Tyee Club of British Columbia began as a group of anglers who returned to Campbell River each year in pursuit of the elusive "Tyee" - a coastal Indian word meaning, "the chief". The Tyee are Chinook salmon, 30 pounds or larger. In those early days, the numbers of large, hard-fighting, line-breaking Tyee were recorded for posterity. It was sport at its grandest! While fewer Tyee are caught today, the spirit of those early sportsman flourishes as a result of the club they founded in 1924. The idea for the Tyee Club was thought up by Dr. J. A. Wilborn, Mr. A. N. Wolverton, and Mr. Melville Haig (the manager of the Willows Hotel in Campbell River) in 1924. These three men were socializing at the Willows Hotel when they decided that the Tyee salmon was just as great as the California Tuna, and hence, the Tyee deserved a club that would protect and honor it. Their concept of fishing to standards that defined the sport, the methods of fishing, and the tackle used, have become an internationally recognized and respected tradition. You can't buy, inherit or win membership in the Tyee Club. But, if you're willing to meet the challenge, you can fish your way into membership. The Tyee club officially started in 1925 with the implementation of an official set of rules.
