Made up of over a dozen large islands, interspersed with a multitude of islets too numerous to count, this special west coast island paradise of Canada is a small taste of the Mediterranean, blended with a unique Canadian flavour. The Gulf Islands enjoy less than 30 inches of rain per year. Lying southwest of the Strait of Georgia, along the coast of Vancouver Island between Campbell River to the north and Victoria to the south, this necklace of islands is surrounded by sheltered waters, strong tides, and dramatic coastlines. The Gulf Islands Guide brings alive the diversity and culture of British Columbia's beautiful Gulf Islands. Enjoy a photographic tour of your favourite Gulf Island or look at all of them and then decide which islands you wish to visit. Our photo tours take you by virtual ferry to the bays and the spectacular views the Gulf Islands are famous for. Many of our images are also available as free e-cards.

155. Folklore: What Is It?
A definition and explanation of folklore, with examples.
http://www.folklore.bc.ca/Whatsfolk.htm
The British Columbia Folklore Society.
What is Folklore?
R ichard M. Dorson was the pre-eminent professor of folklore until his recent death. In a 1960 critique of Dorson's book American Folklore a Harvard professor of American Civilisation wrote that folklore was, "The most sentimental, and the most anti-intellectual scholarly discipline in America today." T folklore F F olklore is common to all people. Understanding, appreciating and sharing another culture's folklore transcends race, colour, class, and creed more effectively than any other single aspect of our lives and, as an element of our past and present society it is something we can all relate to. Its value is no less than any other part of our history and heritage and as such must be documented and preserved as a legacy for our future. T hat being said, it is almost impossible to give a succinct definition of folklore. I t is relatively easy to create an operational definition - one that describes folklore on the basis of ones own, personal interests. For instance, oral literature is one of the aspects of folklore, and by oral literature we mean such things as legends, tales, proverbs, sayings, dialect speech and folksongs. But if you are only interested in collecting proverbs your definition of folklore may be somewhat restricted.
F or a proper understanding and definition of folklore and folklife it is essential to look at its separate parts. Amongst these parts are...

    Columbia (OV-102)
    Background
Columbia, the oldest orbiter in the Shuttle fleet, is named after the Boston, Massachusetts based sloop captained by American Robert Gray. On May 11, 1792, Gray and his crew maneuvered the Columbia past the dangerous sandbar at the mouth of a river extending more than 1,000 miles through what is today south-eastern British Columbia, Canada, and the Washington-Oregon border. The river was later named after the ship. Gray also led Columbia and its crew on the first American circumnavigation of the globe, carrying a cargo of otter skins to Canton, China, and then returning to Boston. Other sailing ships have further enhanced the luster of the name Columbia. The first U.S. Navy ship to circle the globe bore that title, as did the command module for Apollo 11 , the first lunar landing mission. On a more directly patriotic note, "Columbia" is considered to be the feminine personification of the United States. The name is derived from that of another famous explorer, Christopher Columbus. The spaceship Columbia has continued the pioneering legacy of its forebears, becoming the first Space Shuttle to fly into Earth orbit in 1981. Four sister ships joined the fleet over the next 10 years:
