A timeline of book censorship and challenges in the history of british columbia, from 1900 to the present day.
http://www.bcla.bc.ca/ifc/censorshipbc/intro.html
Introduction This website contains a list of books, magazines, newspapers and some music and film materials that have been subject to censorship challenges in British Columbia, including materials that have been banned nation-wide by the government of Canada. The list was compiled from existing print sources (mainly newspapers), library board minutes and websites, and thus includes only documented censorship challenges. When gathering information for the site, the researchers used the definitions of censorship found in the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster's Third New International Dictionary . An amalgamation of these two definitions reads as follows: Censorship : The act or system of changing the content of, or restricting or prohibiting access to information because an individual or organization finds the information unacceptable; the deliberate attempt of governments, churches, groups and individual persons to prevent others from freely expressing themselves.
In order to obtain maximum coverage of reported censorship activity, this project utilized the

The modern history of British Columbia begins with the First Nations people who have lived and flourished on the lush natural resources of these lands for over ten thousand years, since some time after the end of the last Ice Age.
There are three prominent First Nations groups of the Pacific Northwest who have divided the land between themselves for thousands of years: the Nootka , the Coast Salish , and the Kwak'wala Speaking Peoples . The rich land and marine resources enabled them to develop complex societies and the intricate aboriginal art forms that are now internationally acclaimed. To the east, in the region now known as the British Columbia Rockies, the Kootenay were the original keepers of the land, having fought fiercely for possession of the precious hot springs found in these mountains. British Columbia is the western-most province in Canada . It was brought into Confederation July 20 , but had a long history before that. British Columbia, before the arrival of the Europeans, was home to many Aboriginal peoples speaking more than 30 different languages, including the Babine Beaver Carrier Chilcotin ... Tsetsaut , and Tsimshian . The abundance of natural resources, particularly salmon and cedar, led to a complex hierarchical society that evolved on the British Columbian coast. With so much food being available, the peoples of the B.C. coast could focus their time on other pursuits such as art and politics. Haida art , is very popular today. Haida artist Bill Reid is perhaps the most famous aboriginal artist. Another well known aboriginal artist is Dempsey Bob The arrival of Europeans began around the mid- 18th century with the sea otter trade (with the exception of Sir Francis Drake who probably explored the British Columbian coast in ). British Columbia Guide
by TravelWorldOnline
British Columbia is Canada's oldest province in the western part of the country. Gold was the reason for its quick settlement. Adventurers and fortune seekers pushed fur traders and native inhabitants back. The goldrush, native resistance, the arrival of cattle ranchers and farmers, the use of the immense wealth of B.C.'s rivers in salmon, forestry and eventually tourism shaped British Columbia's history. Geologically the Coastal Mountains are older than the Rocky Mountains further east. Their formation is also different from the younger mountain range inland. Vulcanism and earthquakes as well as plate tectonics helped shape this province. The province's motto "Beautiful British Columbia" is justified by its importance for tourism. The different mountain ranges like the Coastal Mountains, the Cascades, the Selkirk Mountains and the Rocky Mountains as well as the many National Parks attract millions of visitors each year. Many Provincial Parks still wait to be discovered and are well kept secrets of beautiful landscapes. Ski areas like Whistler, in central British Columbia or on Vancouver Island offer great winter fun. Agriculture, natural resources, forestry, fishing and tourism are the economic backbone of British Columbia. Do you want to know, which methods the natives use for fishing? Are you interested in where to find jade in British Columbia or how salmon was prepared and canned in earlier times? How is it done today? Which touristic highlights are to be discovered in "Beautiful British Columbia?

History of Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia A Brief Biography Victoria Today Historical Outline Captain James Cook, R.N. - 1778 In the spring of 1778 Captain James Cook, R.N., became the first known European to set foot on what is now British Columbia. Permanent European settlement, long delayed, was brought about by the gradual overland penetration of the fur trade companies towards the Pacific Coast. On March 13, 1843, Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company James Douglas, accompanied by the pioneer Roman Catholic missionary Father J.B.Z. Bolduc, anchored off Clover Point in the "Beaver." The next day he selected the site for Fort Victoria. By mid-June Chief Factor Charles Ross was busy at work constructing the new post. The Hudson's Bay Company - 1843 Hence the City of Victoria was founded by the Hudson's Bay Company on March 14, 1843, as a trading post and fort at the location the native Indians called "Camosack" meaning "Rush of Water." Anticipating that under the Oregon Treaty, then being drawn up, the 49th parallel would be chosen as the International Boundary Line, the Hudson's Bay Company moved its fort from Vancouver on the Columbia River to the southern end of Vancouver Island. Thereafter, for a short time, it was known locally as "Fort Albert," but by resolution passed by the Council of the Northern Department of the Company meeting at Fort Garry on June 10, 1843, it was officially named "Fort Victoria" after the great British Queen.

Early British Columbia

In the years leading up to 1858, there were between 40 000 and 50 000 people, nearly all of these Aboriginal, living in what is now British Columbia. The first Europeans had come to the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. However, it was not until 1849 that Britain formally established the colony of Vancouver Island in order to maintain sovereignty in the West. There were but a few hundred British settlers at that time, most of them living at Fort Victoria as employees of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). The character of the region changed drastically with the Fraser River gold rush of 1858
Until the gold rush of 1858, fur trading had been the dominant industry, controlled by the HBC. With the rush, mining became the predominant economic activity: at its peak, there were as many as 20 000 prospectors. Coal mining, as well as forestry and fishing, also emerged during this period, but none rivalled gold in importance. The period of prosperity was short-lived: by the mid-1860s the gold rush had collapsed, sinking British Columbia into a painful recession. The colony on Vancouver Island was ruled by a governor, with the help of an appointed council and an elected assembly. After British Columbia was established, the two colonies shared a governor. However, the mainland was ruled by decree, rather than with the help of a council. The mainland colony received some measure of representative government in 1864, when a partially elected assembly was created by order of the British authorities. Important political figures of the time included
