British Columbia government reviewing designation of the South Chilcotins as a Provincial Park
October 25, 2002 BACKGROUND: For more information, see the Lillooet LRMP Backgrounder
Issue:
Now more than ever we need your help to save South Chilcotin Mountains Park! As a result of pressure from the mining industry, government is considering deleting or reducing this spectacular park just 150 km north of Whistler. A year ago, B.C.'s longest standing conservation dream was finally realized. A Cabinet order protected Spruce Lake and the Southern Chilcotin Mountains just north of the Bridge River. Other areas of environmental and recreation significance in the Lillooet Forest District were agreed on and put forward by the Land and Resource Planning table for further government decision. Spruce Lake protected area is now in jeopardy. B.C.'s new government had no sooner taken office than it launched a review of the 6-year-long land use planning process that led to Spruce Lake protected area. That review is about to culminate, possibly in a decision to delete or reduce Spruce Lake protected area. In addition, protected areas agreed to by the members of the planning table are at risk of not being established.

British Columbia government reviewing designation of the South Chilcotins as a Provincial Park
September 25, 2001 BACKGROUND: For more information, see the Lillooet LRMP Backgrounder
Issue: The Liberal government is undertaking a review of Phase 1 of the Lillooet land use planning process, which includes revisiting the Order in Council that designated the South Chilcotins as a Provinical Park. The South Chilcotins must remain a Provincial Park as designated by the Order in Council. We need your help urgently! If a decision is made to reverse the protected area designation for the Southern Chilcotins, it will likely happen in the next few weeks. Please write to the Government, urging them to uphold the decision of the land use table, and that the planning process should continue to Phase 2 without delay. Letters from organizations are also required!

Consumers' Association Commends British Columbia Government For Rejecting Alberta-Style Liquor Stores and Calls For Major Updating of BC Liquor Stores
VANCOUVER, Oct. 13 /CNW/ - The British Columbia branch of the Consumers' Association of Canada today commended the BC Government for rejecting an Alberta-style privatized liquor store model that was to be implemented in the province. "This is good news for consumers", said Mr. Bruce Cran, President of the BC branch of CAC. "A made in BC solution will bring stability to the liquor distribution system, while allowing much needed innovation and enhanced customer service to be implemented".
"The British Columbia Government's announcement that it will continue with the current government owned liquor store model, while seeking an enhanced role for private stores, is a reasonable, balanced approach", said Mr. Cran. "Private stores have offered benefits to consumers and there is a continuing important role for them as part of the overall liquor distribution system."
The decision by the British Columbia will also reduce the concerns of municipalities and community groups about the large-scale proliferation of private liquor stores and the impact this would have on communities.

British Columbia government apologizes to Indians
Throne speech: 'Errors have been made in the past'
Story Tools Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province. Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) British Columbia's government apologized for the past treatment of the Canadian province's Indians, saying its institutions have failed to make up for past discrimination. "Your government deeply regrets the mistakes that were made by governments of every political stripe over the course of our province's history," Lt.-Gov. Iona Campagnolo said in a speech on Tuesday. "Errors have been made in the past," the speech said. "Our institutions have failed aboriginal people across our province." The apology came in the government's "throne speech," in which the governing Liberal Party outlined its upcoming legislative agenda. Last year, the government held a provincewide referendum on treaty negotiations that was soundly criticized by Indians as an attempt by the majority to impose its views on a minority. The government said the referendum was its attempt to kickstart a stalled treaty negotiation process that had cost millions and had yet to result in a single settlement.

Massive labour protest brewing in British Columbia Protest lines swell in response to
    draconian back-to-work legislation

Vancouver - Labour unrest is growing in British Columbia rather than receding as each new day arrives following the passage of legislation ordering 43,000 striking health support employees back to work. The unprecedented legislation includes a 15% wage rollback and allows the government to continue contracting out jobs at will.
The employees changed their picket lines to protest lines after Bill 37 was pushed through the legislature by Gordon Campbell's Liberal government early last Thursday. Other unions have refused to cross picket lines. Now, as the second week of labour unrest begins, many of the province's transit workers and teachers say they will join the protest.
The B.C. labour relations board declared the walkout illegal as of Friday and on Sunday the Health Employers Association of B.C. and the Facilities Bargaining Association were to meet at the Supreme Court, where an order was being sought to force workers to return or face penalties.
The health employers, who are controlled by the government, want significant penalties imposed on anyone ignoring the labour relations board ruling.

    Message from the Premier
The following Strategic Plan has been produced for you, the people of British Columbia. It sets out our government's priorities over the next three years to revitalize the economy, ensure sound fiscal management, and deliver excellent public services. And it details clear measures to ensure accountability for our progress in reaching these goals. Much has been accomplished in the past two years since our government's first Strategic Plan was tabled. We have completed or begun work on 95 per cent of our New Era commitments. We have significantly increased funding for education and health care, all while achieving a balanced budget in 2004/05. And we are now seeing significant improvements in our economy, with record levels of job creation and renewed confidence for the future. One of the most exciting events that occurred over the past year was British Columbia's success in its bid to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Over the next several years our government will ensure that we fully maximize the benefits of hosting the Olympics and leverage this opportunity to attract new business investment, expand and diversify the province's exports to benefit all regions of the province, and leave sustainable legacies for athletes and communities. The initiatives that we undertake as we prepare for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will create jobs, strengthen regional economies, and establish our province as an economic leader and a global magnet for trade and investment.

British Columbia government fails on environmental record May 15, 2003 Vancouver - At the mid-term of its mandate, the government of British Columbia was today given a failing grade on its environmental performance by a broad coalition of conservation groups. The report card issued by the groups, and an accompanying fact-based website - BCFacts.org – provide a detailed examination of the government’s record on environmental stewardship. "The record is dismal. In fact, it amounts to nothing less than a dismantling of the environmental standards and safeguards that British Columbians have put in place," said Vicky Husband, Conservation Chair of the Sierra Club of Canada, BC Chapter. "A close look at what the BC Liberal government has done will shock the public." The report card and website reveal, for instance, that British Columbia is the only province in Canada to roll back drinking water standards since the Walkerton tragedy in May 2000. "Premier Gordon Campbell said his government would be open and transparent," said Jim Fulton, Executive Director of the David Suzuki Foundation. "Instead, they have changed important regulations without public consultation, and the way they are ramming environmental legislation through now is what you would expect from a tin-pot dictatorship." British Columbians have consistently ranked the environment as a high priority. The conservation groups encourage British Columbians to visit the website to learn about the radical changes the government has enacted in the last two years in order to determine if their concerns about the environment are being taken into account.

For Immediate Release July 13, 2002 Teacher leaders from across Canada unanimously condemn British Columbia government actions (CTF News Service- St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) Delegates attending the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) issued a strong and unanimous proclamation today in support of their teacher colleagues in British Columbia. "The B.C. government's draconian approach will hurt thousands of students who will witness school closures, an increase in the size of their classes and some of their teachers being laid off," says CTF President Doug Willard. Neil Worboys, President of the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) adds: "Our members have had a legislative onslaught on their bargaining rights including limitations on the right to strike and a reduced scope of conditions that can be bargained. The loss of bargaining rights will also result in a shift in the relationship balance in schools between teachers and management. Teachers are more vulnerable to arbitrary actions by administrators." The B.C. government measures are expected to force 57 schools to close their doors, to lay off approximately 1,500 teachers and to strip away the bargaining rights of those who will remain.

British Columbia government calls for coordinated forestry practices and international forest products marketing strategy in the region
October 26, 2000 Four coastal British Columbia (Canada) forest product companies that agreed this past spring to an 18-month moratorium on timber harvesting in the area in exchange for a similar standstill in marketing campaigns against them by four environmental groups, say they “welcome” British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosangh’s “call earlier this week for a coordinated strategy to address international concerns regarding BC forest practices and products.” The four forest product companies involved in the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative (CFCI) are Canadian Forest Products, Fletcher Challenge Canada, Western Forest Products, and Weyerhaeuser. The four environmental groups are the Sierra Club of British Columbia, the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), the Coastal Rainforest Coalition (CRC), and Greenpeace. However, also earlier this week, the four forest products companies reported that Greenpeace had “reopened” its campaign in violation of the “peace pact,” but that the initiative would be continued regardless of this development (see Forest companies to go forward with BC initiative — with or without Greenpeace). Greenpeace reportedly reopened its campaign via a letter it sent to German papermakers and publishers, as noted in a joint release by the forest products companies, A July article in Pulp and Paper Online (see Forest product companies, environmental groups to co-sponsor B.C. ecosystem initiative) reported that the four companies and four environmental groups were co-sponsoring work on development of an unprecedented proposal for a conservation-based ecosystem approach to temperate rainforests on the Central and North Coast of British Columbia.
