Current research topics include developing improved processing algorithms for SAR image formation and for Doppler centroid estimation and antenna pointing angle estimation. SAR data compression algorithms are being developed, in combination with speckle reduction algorithms. In radar polarimetry, feature extraction and image classification algorithms are being developed for sea ice classification. In radar interferometry, algorithms have been developed for automatic baseline estimation. Peter Murtha

British Columbia is the birthplace of helicopter skiing and continues to be the world's number one destination for heli sports. After years of searching we discovered Bella Coola, and found it to be ideal in terms of geographic features, climate, and diversity of sport and eco tourism activities.
The Bella Coola Valley is located approximately 400 kilometres north of Vancouver, in the Coast Range of British Columbia. This is the most rugged and inaccessible of all regions in British Columbia (unless you have a trusty helicopter and air carrier).
The valley is unique in its natural beauty, temperate climate, and sparse population and is famous for its wildlife, rivers, and fish species.
This land is by tradition the Nuxalk First Nation's tribal territory and has been inhabited by the Nuxalk people for thousands of years.
Bella Coola is also the ending point for the first crossing of the North American continent, accomplished by Sir Alexander MacKenzie in 1793.

In 1971 British Columbia established ecological reserves; more than a hundred now preserve sedge meadows, peat bogs, and dunes for study and limited recreation. Some 400 parks attract growing crowds of vacationers.
Salmon canning began along the Fraser River in 1870. A century later overfishing, pollution, and damming of spawning grounds for hydropower, which generates 90 percent of the province's electricity, have diminished Canada's most productive salmon fisheries. The federal and provincial governments have invested 565 million dollars to restore fish stocks.
Much of British Columbia's coal fuels Japanese and South Korean steel mills. Bustling Vancouver, Canada's gateway to Asia, has absorbed thousands of ethnic Chinese from Hong Kong, which reverted to China in 1997. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition

Fraser River - Hope to Maple Ridge/Fort Langley
The single most important physical feature that has contributed to the development of the Lower Mainland over the last 200 years has been the Fraser River. Over centuries it has deposited rich soil throughout the Valley all the way to its mouth known as the Fraser Delta resulting in a fertile plain supporting agricultural efforts from family farms to huge corporate tracts. The Fraser has provided a means for transportation for both the First Nations and the more recent explorers, fur traders, and colonists until it was replaced by the railway and automobile. It played a major role in the movement of miners during the Fraser Gold Rush. As well it has been a source of much sustinence and commerce with its abundant fisheries of salmon and other species. Along its path were erected the first settlements in this area.
Hope is where the Fraser River emerges from the Fraser Canyon and flows into the Fraser Valley of which technically the Lower Mainland is a part. It is at Hope that the Coquihalla River flows in to the Fraser.

Imagine a strong and vibrant provincial economy. Imagine a supportive social infrastructure. Imagine safe, healthy communities and a sustainable environment.
Example map product developed for Lamb Creek Wildfire in southwest British Columbia. The government of British Columbia, Canada, is focusing on these three ideals, making them the cornerstones of its vision of British Columbia as a prosperous and just province whose citizens achieve their potential and have confidence in the future. Now imagine enabling and engaging the participation of individual citizens and the private and public sectors in achieving this vision. What if these groups had simple, direct, and open access to integrated social, economic, and environmental information? What if everyone could see how they fit into the larger social, economic, and environmental fabric of British Columbia? What if everyone could see the interests of others. We could see the potential impacts of our decisions. We could act together with certainty and responsibility, mindful of our common good. The Land Information BC business delivery model consists of the following key components:
    • Geographic reference information (baseline mapping) of natural and manmade features of the province that provides the geographic framework for spatial referencing

The goal of making Canada the most connected country through Connecting Canadians has fallen short of meeting the information communication technology needs of women and especially those living Around the province, libraries play key roles as sources for information and are becoming increasingly responsible for online information services in smaller and remote communities. While the BC government has offered summer funding opportunities for libraries to hire students, this short-time initiative does not address training needs of people for the rest of the month, nor does it address the ongoing staffing needs of libraries to assist patrons with this skill development. The summer student initiative with the goal of offering Internet skill training is least accessible for women who are mothers, as children are at home during the summer months. As well, when one considers women living in poverty, access to childcare services is becoming ever more difficult with recent government reductions in childcare subsidies. To date, we have travelled to three regions. The following are issues women have identified as impacting their participation in information communication technologies:
