BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... PEOPLE Color CANADA Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada has a land mass of 9 970 610 km2, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones.
Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Climate: Canada is divided into seven regions, each with a very different landscape and climate.
1. The Pacific Coast Bathed by warm, moist Pacific air currents, the British Columbia coast, indented by deep fiords and shielded from Pacific storms by Vancouver Island, has the most moderate climate of Canada's regions.
Vancouver Island's west coast receives an exceptional amount of rain, giving it a temperate rain forest climate. Although it does not contain the diversity of species of a tropical rain forest, the island's west coast does have the oldest and tallest trees in Canada: Western Red Cedars 1300 years old and Douglas firs 90 m high.
2. The Cordillera From British Columbia to just east of the Alberta border the land is young, with rugged mountains and high plateaus. Signs of geologically-recent volcanic activity can be seen in Garibaldi Provincial Park in southern British Columbia and at Mount Edziza in the north.

    Earthly inferno
Fires unprecedented in number and size consume the interior of British Columbia in a devastating season of destruction
By Dane Lanken S OME WITNESSES TO THE CONFLAGRATION during British Columbia’s recent summer of fire said the flames from burning forests were so big, so intense, so fearsome that they imagined it was what the gates of hell look like. Certainly in this NASA satellite image of a large swath of Western Canada and the adjacent United States, hell seems to have broken free of the underworld: scores of open fires, vast palls of smoke. And on the ground, people anxious, afraid, often destitute. Even the angels of the occasion, the firefighters, for all their skill and determination, were sometimes powerless in the face of endless tracts of tinder-dry forest, quick-shifting winds, rugged terrain and skies that fired down bolts of incendiary lightning but little or no rain. The Canada-U.S. border runs horizontally about midway through this big image, recorded August 21. The Rocky Mountains descend slightly diagonally through the centre, capped by the Continental Divide and the B.C.-Alberta border. The smaller image was snapped September 2. It shows the City of Kelowna, scene of the fire that began in Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park, which is that angry-pink bump poking into Okanagan Lake. With hundreds of homes lost and thousands of people displaced, it was the most destructive of the summer’s countless blazes.

Colin J.B. Wood British Columbia is a distinctive province and major region of Canada. Its size, mountainous character, extensive indented coastline, mighty rivers and orientation to the Pacific realm, create a special identity that sets it apart from the rest of the continent. Its diverse ecosystems are parallelled by a rich ethnic mosaic and variegated tapestry of human activity - from the sophisticated metropolis of Vancouver to the remote and isolated settlements of the northern interior. This a revised and completely updated version of British Columbia:its Resources and People . It systematically describes and interprets the physical and human geography of the province at the turning point of the millenium.
