The History Department at the University of British Columbia offers a complete range of programmes, including a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Arts with Honours; a Master of Arts; and a Doctor of Philosophy.
The geographical foci and intellectual approaches of the thirty faculty members who comprise the department's teaching faculty vary widely. The Department's primary strengths lie in Canadian, Asian, European, American and Latin American history. In temporal terms its greatest emphasis is on the modern period (since 1800), though it has strength in the history of early modern Europe and North America.
The research and teaching interests of the department's faculty centre on a diverse set of problems and topics, including religion; gender; popular culture; the history of ideas; comparative nationalisms; migration; political culture; the history of science and technology; the family; native history; labour; international relations; resources and business; and urban history. Faculty research and teaching in these areas are supported by long-established and well-maintained designated collections in one of Canada's leading university research libraries.
The History Department's primary academic goals can be grouped under five headings.

Native Culture
It is believed that native peoples first migrated to Vancouver Island 8000 to 10000 years ago. Today, the Kwakw a k a 'wakw (Kwak'wala speaking) peoples comprise approximately twenty four percent of the total population living in the North Vancouver Island, Port McNeill area. There are many village sites located throughout the North Island. The Native (First Nations) tribes, or bands, residing in the area include the 'N a m g is, Qwe'Qwa'Sot'Em and Ma' a mtagila. The First Nations peoples have played a huge role in the history of this area and continue to be a major factor in its present and future. Their traditions and cultures have been threatened ever since the first Europeans visited Vancouver Island in the late 1700s, and the struggles to retain and recover their languages, land and cultures continue to the present day. Paddling in the waters in and around Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound, we often come across reminders of the area's first inhabitants. Whether we are landing on a midden (white clamshell) beach, spotting pictographs on the rocks, or visiting 'Mimkw

    Mussel Culture in British Columbia
Several species of mussel occur in BC's coastal waters yet mussels have traditionally been more of a fouling problem to shellfish growers than a potential farmed animal. For centuries, mussels, mainly Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis , have been cultured on the coasts of the Netherlands, France and Spain. Methods of growing them range from bottom culture with dredge harvesting in the Netherlands to intertidal "Bouchot" systems in France to off-bottom raft culture in Spain. New Zealand has recently developed an impressive farming system for the green lip mussel, Perna canaliculus , and now market them worldwide. Their system was originally based upon the Spanish methods but soon moved on from those. Aquaculture of mussels in North America began in the 1970's and is now a substantial industry in the northeast United States and Atlantic Canada where M. edulis is the main species grown. On the Pacific Coast, mussel culture is practiced around Whidbey Island and other areas in Puget Sound, Washington. In BC, efforts at mussel culture with the native Mytilus trosullus have been thwarted by both duck predation and massive natural summer mortality before reaching marketable size. A pilot project was carried out in the early 1980's to determine the potential for growing the blue mussel

Shellfish Farming in the 21st Century
This resource is a gateway for BC shellfish growers and other interested persons to access up-to-date information pertaining to farm level production. It will provide general technical information about culture methods and technology. It is hoped that this resource will assist innovation and business development in the BC Shellfish aquaculture industry. Around the world, aquaculture and seafood production is rapidly changing and growing. The demand worldwide for seafood products continues to increase. Analysis by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shows that as the supply from capture fisheries continues to decline, aquaculture will provide a greater share of global production. To do so, production levels will increase as more efficient and cost-effective practices become adopted. Access to sources that will provide details of up-to-date culture practices, new techniques, products and equipment, reliable suppliers and shellfish markets is vital for shellfish growers to develop their industry and compete in the global economy. Knowledge transfer is essential to building a strong domestic industry in coastal communities. In British Columbia, shellfish aquaculture is undergoing a transformation. It has the potential for significant growth according to a report by the Department of Western Economic Diversification (WED) based on a study conducted by Coopers and Lybrand (1997

    BRITISH COLUMBIA'S CULTURAL MOSAIC
No doubt about it. There is definitely something British about British Columbia. The capital, Victoria, on Vancouver Island, relishes the role. In summer, London double-decker buses ply the streets of the city with curious loads of tourists. Tearooms dot the city serving high tea in the finest British tradition, and one of Victoria's residential suburbs, Oak Bay, is considered so British in character, its residents are affectionately referred to as living behind the "Tweed Curtain." In the case of British Columbia, the perception reflects the reality. As with much of Canada and its relatively short history, English immigrants and their descendants have always had a big impact. In British Columbia, for example, more than 50 per cent of the 3.2 million people who live here claim English ancestry; a large majority of them claim it exclusively and a smaller contingent have at least some English in their blood. But Victoria is the only city in B.C. where the decidedly-British heritage is worn in full regalia. In fact, ancestors of today's British Columbians come from all over the globe and as communication technology continues to make our world smaller, ethnic communities across British Columbia are taking increasing pride in the celebration of their heritage, becoming more visible on the cultural landscape of the province.

My recurrent obsession: humans and nature. Today the focus takes the form of a trip to town: Nelson, B.C., home of some 10,000 relatively sane individuals, in a community growing fast into a: "city"? It's already officially a city. Anyhow, it's my first trip to town in a couple of months and I'm not used to seeing all the types of humanity that live there. Seeing the old and the crippled, I realize in an instant how they are all doomed in the scenario of the END TIMES that shout from the grocery checkout line unheeded. Certainly a large proportion of the urban population would be unfit to survive any collapse of the

    60. Leadership And Culture In Schools In Northern British Columbia
Copyright by CJEAP and the author(s). Leadership and culture in schools innorthern british columbia Bridge building and/or rebalancing act?
    http://www.umanitoba.ca/publications/cjeap/articles/miscellaneousArticles/fostrv
Canadian Journal of Educational Administration and Policy, CJEAP and the author(s). Leadership and culture in schools in northern British Columbia:
Bridge building and/or re-balancing act? By Rosemary Foster (University of Alberta)
and Tim Goddard (University of Calgary) Context and Purpose of the Study There is a growing body of literature that stresses the importance of leadership in providing quality education in Canadian schools serving predominantly aboriginal First Nations education must reflect the language, traditions, and culture of their communities and receive the resources necessary to ensure quality programming, and to ensure educational attainment and foster the "crucial skills for self-governance and economic self-reliance (RCAP, 1996, vol. 5, p. 3)." (Carr-Stewart, 2001, p. 141) She concludes by stating that education is not only a long-neglected treaty commitment, but is crucial to the rebalancing of political and economic power between Aboriginal nations and Canadian governments (p. 141). Despite a growing recognition of the critical role of leadership in improving aboriginal schooling, there has to date been a tendency to privilege the perspectives of political analysts, educational theorists, and politicians and policy makers (Assembly of First Nations, 1988; Hawthorne Report, 1966/67; Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, 1996). Kirkness emphasizes why this is problematic: I would like to suggest that we consider a 4th "R", namely rhetoric. It is common to hear our political leaders and educators speak eloquently about the importance of education and what we must do to improve it not only for today, but future generations. We all know the right words; we sound like experts, but we fall short when it comes to putting our rhetoric into action. (Kirkness, 1998, pp. 12-13)
