2004 WALK/Run For MS Register Now The Super Cities WALK/Run for MS brings support and hope to over 6,000 British Columbians and their families who live with this terrible disease. Our hope is for a cure, and until that day we are providing support and encouragement to those who face the daily struggle of living with MS. Join us today and give hope to someone you know.
Some Results are in! On April 25, thousands of BC walkers and runners and close to 1,000 volunteers came together in 17 BC communities to participate in and support the 13th annual Super Cities WALK/Run For Multiple Sclerosis. Sunday's walks followed successful WALKs in Duncan, Comox Valley and Victoria on April 4, and there is one BC WALK still to go in Prince George on June 6. Participants, family members, friends and volunteers showed tremendous dedication and hard work in raising pledges to support the MS Society. Now that all the cheques, loonies and online donations have been counted for the 21 WALKs completed to date, the 2004 Super Cities WALK/Run for MS raised an incredible provincial total of over $800,000 to support people living with multiple sclerosis.

Select a city in British Columbia Vancouver Victoria A large number of Indian Nations used to live along the coast and in the interior of British Columbia before the arrival of the Europeans. The Hudson's Bay Company controlled the area west of the Rocky Mountains, including part of the Oregon Territory, until 1846 when the boundary with the United States was established at the 49th parallel. In 1848 the mainland became a British colony, and in 1849 Vancouver Island also became a British colony, administered by the Hudson's Bay Company. On July 20, 1871, British Columbia became part of the new Dominion of Canada - on the condition that the federal government would build a transcontinental railroad. The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) reached Vancouver, in 1885. Throughout the twentieth century British Columbia continued to grow with immigrants arriving from the rest of Canada and a substantial growth in Asian immigration after the 1960's. The two most well known cities are Victoria and Vancouver. Victoria, with a population of 326,010, is located on Vancouver Island and is the Capital of BC. It is known as a beautiful tourist city. Vancouver, with a population 1,831,665, is the nation's fourth largest city and a vibrant cultural and business centre.

FUN, FUN, FUN!
There are numerous activities to keep the whole family active and entertained, such as Science World, two Imax theatres, a Maritime Museum, and the MacMillan Planetarium with its spectacular laser shows. Shopping is a must on Robson Street, in Gastown, or through the markets on Granville Island. Other attractions include Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens, Vancouver Aquarium and the Museum of Anthropology. Boating, fishing and other outdoor sports are close at hand. Indoors, the city has NHL and NBA teams, a busy theater scene and symphony. Vancouver has a distinctive international flavor, with cultural representation from all over the world. Dining opportunities abound and provide an intriguing variety of tastes, with something for every palate. Entertainment opportunities are equally eclectic, ranging from live theatre and music venues to a multitude of events, festivals, and movie theatres. Vancouver is also jumping off point for charter boats, cruise ships and floatplanes that can take the lucky visitor to some of the most stunning and serene spots imaginable.

There are currently 154 municipalities in BC, plus 28 regional districts. The areas which are not part of an incorporated municipality are included in the RD's except for the Northwest corner of the province: the Stikene region, bordering the Yukon and Alaska, which has no regional government. The municipalities are classed as follows (number of examples in parentheses): 1. Districts (District Municipalities or Townships) (55)
    2. Villages (20)
    3. Towns (15)
    4. Cities (43)
    5. The City of Vancouver (1) The last distinction is spelled out in the Local Government Act, Definitions: "City" does not include the City of Vancouver. The reason for this is that Vancouver is the only city with a charter and therefore is not under the Local Gov't Act. Included under Districts are one Native Indian Government District: Sechelt, one Mountain Resort Municipality: Whistler, and one Island Municipality: Bowen Island. Statistics Canada census information gives the designation "DM" for District Municipality, whether the District officially calls itself "Township of ...", "District of ...", or simply "Corporation of ..." According to section 17 of the Local Gov't Act: Classification of municipalities 17. (1) A municipality must be incorporated as follows:

Origin of British Columbia's Name Much of the mainland region was originally known as New Caledonia; however, this name (duplicated in South Pacific) was discarded in favour of British Columbia. The designation appears to have originated with Queen Victoria and was officially proclaimed in 1858. Columbia (after the Columbia River which was named by the American Captain Robert Gray for his ship Columbia ) had previously been loosely applied to the southern portion of the colony.
