Draft report of members of the Iron Age Research Seminar on future research directions for british Iron Age archaeology.

Understanding the British Iron Age
An agenda for action
Abstract This paper assesses the overall research priorities for British Iron Age archaeology in the coming decades. Discussion is organised around five general themes: within each of these, we set out particular topics on which research is essential or should be encouraged, based on current understandings of the period. Each section is followed by a summary of the key points and recommendations for specific changes in current archaeological practice. Given the new research opportunities brought about by developer-funding, the resultant framework will, we believe, be of particular value in supporting curatorial decisions, as well as helping to shape more detailed research agendas for the period formulated at regional level and articulating these with research issues at national level. This is a Draft Report of a Working Party of members of the Iron Age Research Seminar. The Convenor was Colin Haselgrove (University of Durham); and the members were: Ian Armit (Queens University Belfast), Tim Champion (University of Southampton), John Creighton (University of Reading), Adam Gwilt (National Museum of Wales), JD Hill (British Museum), Fraser Hunter (National Museum of Scotland), Ann Woodward (Birmingham University Archaeological Field Unit). Silchester Roman Town
The Insula IX 'Town Life' Project
The Silchester Town Life Project was established in 1997 by the Department of Archaeology, the University of Reading. The project is both a training Field School and a research excavation located in the heart of Calleva Atrebatum , a major Roman civitas capital (administrative centre), situated in the modern village of Silchester, in the county of Hampshire (England). The excavation will trace the Iron Age origins, subsequent Roman development and eventual abandonment of approximately one-third of Insula IX, believed to have been a part of the town devoted to industrial and commercial activity, as well as residential use. The Silchester Roman town excavations of Insula IX are carried out for 6 weeks every summer by the Department of Archaeology at the University of Reading. This means that access to the excavation is only possible for visitors during the months of July and August . This web site provides details about the dates of the annual excavation and the times of opening. We are also able to offer disabled access to the excavations during this time.
The Roman Town itself is open to visitors all year round, but it should be noted that this is not the responsibility of the Department of Archaeology at Reading. The Roman Town is owned by Hampshire County Council under the auspices of English Heritage, and any queries about opening times and disabled access should be addressed directly to them.

133. Craigflower Manor And Schoolhouse
Pictures, description, and archaeology of this british Columbia School. Students were taught at Craigflower Schoolhouse from 1854 to 1911.
http://www.heritage.gov.bc.ca/craig/craig.htm
This was one of Vancouver Island's first farming communities, established in 1853 along Victoria's Gorge Waterway to meet the Hudson's Bay Company's obligations to Britain to support colonization. On lands purchased from chiefs of the indigenous aboriginal people, Kenneth McKenzie oversaw construction of a self-sufficient settlement. The Kosapsom people still harvest shellfish, salmon and herring from the tidal waters that separate the Manor from the Schoolhouse. Today, the original Georgian Manor house, built using the Hudson's Bay Company post-and-beam method, still stands amid fields and gardens, and across the bridge you'll find the oldest schoolhouse in B.C.
(Click on the map to view it in detail) Craigflower occupies several open hectares at the junction of Craigflower Road (Old Island Highway 1A, almost parallel with the main Trans-Canada Highway 1) and Admirals Road. It is just a 10-minute drive from downtown Victoria and directly accessible from the Trans-Canada via Admirals Road for those approaching Victoria from Duncan and Goldstream Provincial Park.
Craigflower is managed by The Land Conservancy of British Columbia. They can be contacted at (250) 479-8053.

Programme Links Want to Know More: Marine Archaeology If you are interested in becoming involved with marine archaeology, then the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) offers divers a chance to become involved with wreck investigation. The wrecks of two protected 17th Century warships in the Sound of Mull - the Swan and the Dartmouth - can be visited by divers by arrangement with the NAS Training Officer at the Lochaline Diving Centre in Scotland. The NAS runs a variety of practical courses ranging from a basic introduction to nautical archaeology to the skills of surveying, drawing, and taking photographs above or below the water. More advanced techniques which can be learned include the use of equipment such as magnetometers, side-scan sonar, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The NAS can be contacted on 01705 818419. There are number of wrecks in British waters which are designated as historic wrecks. These may not be dived except under licence. Advice on historic wrecks can be obtained from the Archaeological Diving Unit at St. Andrews University. The Historic Wreck map shows the location of some protected wrecks around Britain such as the Swan and the Dartmouth.

All that I ask is that if you want to reproduce any text, pictures, diagrams or tables, in any form, please email me first for permission. A lot has happened since I first put these pages online. I have graduated from University with a First Class Honours degree, and toured America for three months.
