The Covered Bridges of Madison County Originally boasting 19 covered bridges, five remain today, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridges were covered by order of the County Board of Supervisors to help preserve the large flooring timbers, which were more expensive to replace than the lumber used to cover the bridge sides and roof. Usually, the bridges were named for the resident who lived closest. Roseman Covered Bridge Built in 1883 by Benton Jones, it is 107 feet in length and sits in its original location. Roseman was renovated in 1992 at a cost of $152,515. In Robert James Waller's novel The Bridges of Madison County and the movie of the same name, Roseman is the bridge Robert Kincaid seeks when he stops at Francesca Johnson's for directions; it is also where Francesca leaves her note inviting him to dinner. Holliwell Covered Bridge
Built in 1880 by Benton Jones, it is the longest covered bridge, measuring 122 feet. It remains in its original site over the Middle River southeast of Winterset. Holliwell was renovated in 1995 at a cost of $225,000. It is featured in The Bridges of Madison County movie

Abiqua Creek (Gallon House) Bridge
Gallon House County Road, Silverton vicinity
Marion County, 1917
The Gallon House Bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in Marion County and one of the oldest covered bridges in Oregon. This structure is an 84-foot housed Howe truss with a timber roadway deck. Gallon House has rectangular portals, narrow ribbon openings at the eaves, and board-and-batten siding. The bridge is open to traffic. Marion County completed major repairs to the bridge in 1985. According to local tradition, the bridge owes its name to an unauthorized liquor dispensary which operated at the north approach prior to prohibition. During that time, Silverton to the south was a dry town, while Mount angel to the north was not. Historic Bridges Home

157. Historic Covered Bridges Of Michigan
Data and photographs of three bridges built in 1858 in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
http://my.net-link.net/~michaelf/historic.htm
1858 was a banner year for bridge building in the city of Grand Rapids. The toll bridge at Bridge Street, which had burned, was rebuilt. To the south, the impressive Pearl Street Bridge was erected. October of that year saw a third crossing rise over the Grand River at Leonard. All three were toll bridges demanding a fee of 2 cents per foot passenger except on Sundays when churchgoers were allowed free passage. A one year pass could be purchased for $1.00. The Bridge Street Bridge, note icebreakers in river.

The Grand Rapids Bridge Company invested $9,000 into the building of a toll bridge at Bridge Street in 1852. When it was destroyed by fire in 1858 the company rebuilt anew and continued to collect tolls for nearly twenty years. When maintenance costs became too demanding the Bridge Street Bridge was sold to the City of Grand Rapids for $1,000 and freed from tolls. The bridge was nearly victimized by fire yet again in the 1860's when a steam-powered threshing machine stalled midway during its crossing. Embers and steam belched into the cobweb covered rafters and ignited a blaze. The bridge-tender hastily formed a bucket brigade and doused the fire. THANK YOU!!!
I f you pass along a quiet New England road in fall and come upon what appears to be someone's misplaced home, you're tempted to recall the romantic version of the origin of covered bridges... They, of course, were built for discretely kissing your favorite girl while on a long buggy ride home from church. O ne resists the more practical reason nineteenth-century artisans walled-up the sides and placed a roof over the way across the river. The purpose is lost on us because we have huge, steel structural I-beams and have developed the technology to plow the snow from our roads and bridges using 5-ton trucks pushing massive steel blades. In 1830, wheeled-conveyances were stored away in winter and replaced by sleighs and lone beasts. The road agents of the day used large barrel-like vehicles to roll the snow flat and hard. This caused a problem for the bridges, of course, because they were built of wooden timbers and couldn't support the weight of a long winter's snow. Karl Johnson of Groton, Mass., a photographer and producer of Covered Bridge calendars, wrote:
