This 277' wooden bridge, built in 1870 by Harrison Chamberlain, consists of two king post trusses and a 166' Town lattice truss. The latter truss was the longest wooden span in Vermont. S cott Covered Bridge , 1998 . In 1981 a concrete pier was constructed to provide support. An earlier attempt to strengthen the bridge with a lamenated bow arch was not successful. E xamples of several historic bridge types can be found in the Windham Region, and many are easily accessible. • 126. Covered Bridges Of Northeast Ohio And Western Pennsylvania

    Covered Bridges
of Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania
I recently (Summer/Fall 1999) became obsessed with visiting and taking pictures of covered bridges. They're wonderful historical remnants of a time when life wasn't so fast-paced. Pennsylvania and Ohio are the two states in the U.S. with the most covered bridges. A number of these are found in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. I've visited and photographed many of the bridges in the counties in this region and have posted them on this page. The pictures are organized by county (see map).

    Why Covered?
Many bridges built in the 19th century were made of wood. Wood was cheap and readily available as a building material. However, weather exacted a toll on the wooden structures. Covering the wooden truss-work and planking with a roof and walls protected the bridge from the elements and extended its useful lifespan. Many are now over 100 years old and are still in use.
    Evolution of the Wooden Truss:
    Kingpost Truss:
This is the simplest type of wooden truss. It's only useful for short spans.

    130. Bridges To The Past: Alabama's Covered Bridges
TV program. Photographs and details of the bridges featured. Videos available. Hosted by the University of Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio.
    http://www.alabamatv.org/bridges/
W ooden covered bridges played an important role in the development of Alabama by providing safe passage over creeks and rivers at locations where crossing in a horse-drawn wagon or buggy would otherwise be extremely difficult or impossible. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hundreds of covered bridges were constructed in the state, but now only a few remain. Those persistent engineering marvels that still stand have become popular tourist attractions, giving visitors insight into the needs and hardships of our ancestors. "Bridges to the Past," visits 11 historic covered bridges in Alabama, all of which are open to the public. From the Coldwater Bridge in Calhoun County, built in 1850, to the Horton Mill Bridge in Blount County, constructed in 1935, "Bridges to the Past" follows a timeline of Alabama history as witnessed by bridges which have withstood the tests of time, high water, and heavy loads. Because of their importance to communities, these bridges were used as meeting places for baptisms, weddings, and at least one hanging. Some were strategic participants in the Civil War while others simply served the daily needs of farmers and merchants. Spanning locations ranging from peaceful brooks to ominous gorges, Alabama’s covered bridges provide picturesque settings for reflecting on life in the past.

TABLE MOUNTAIN IN BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA View toward the waterfall on North Table Mountain. A view of the Cliff on Table Mountain. A BEAUTIFUL PLACE Hi, I'm Larry Matthews. Welcome to this web site about a mountain that means a lot to me! Since 1963 I have lived within 30 miles of Table Mountain in Butte County, California. For 20 of those years I lived within its shadow. It is a wonderful mountain and is a very unique mesa. It's located just north-east of Oroville, California which is 75 miles north of Sacramento. For the majority of the year it is green and full of wonderful wildflowers. However it only takes a month of 90+ weather to reduce the color to yellow-brown. During the summer the heat exceeds the 100 degree mark and the mountain then looks barren. I have hiked the mountain innumerable times since 1963. It is wonderful to explore the green, tree lined mesas that extend themselves north-eastward toward the Sierra Nevadas. Even those who have lived here all of their lives don't realize that the mountain is in three pieces. The southern table is the most obvious: the one with the concrete "O" on it that faces Oroville. If one hikes the first table he or she will see that on the northern end the mountain drops off into a valley and immediately comes back up to the butte (the smallest part of the mountain).

    Cottage Grove, Oregon
Cottage Grove has earned the title as the "Covered Bridge Capital of the West." There are six beautiful Covered Bridges within a few minutes of downtown. Building dates of the bridges range from 1920 to1987. In the earlier days of construction, steel and concrete was hard to come by and since timber was more accessible, the bridges were built from locally-cut timber and then covered to keep the rain from aging them. The older bridges are a standing testimony to the skilled craftsmen living in the area. Chambers Railroad Bridge About a half a mile from Main Street on South River Road, just past Harrison Avenue, this bridge is the only remaining covered railroad bridge in Oregon. It was built in 1925 to bring logs to the J.H. Chambers Mill in Cottage Grove. The bridge is 78 feet long.
    Stewart Bridge

This 60 foot bridge, built in 1930, is located on Garoutte Road. It was open to vehicular traffic until 1982, despite heavy damage. It has been restored and is now a pedestrian bridge.
