How to Photograph Architecture (Exterior)
by Philip Greenspun Home Learn : One Article This is an example-based tutorial on photographing buildings.
Your pictures need not be pretty
Architectural photography at its best will convey the experience of being in and around a built environment. In the case of the Dachau Concentration Camp , this won't result in comforting attractive images. Below is a parking garage in Kyoto . The colors and industrial appearance of the structure are remarkable in the middle of a city known for its ancient temples and gardens. The purpose of the image is to capture the feeling of walking by the structure, not to delight or decorate. A supermarket exterior is a subject that will probably never make a wall-worthy image by itself. However, the image below (from the Hawaii flowers collection ) captures the spirit of being in the parking lot at night:
Give old buildings some space
In general, the older the structure, the more environmental context is required. Using your hands or your mind, crop the preceding images to include just the structures and see if they would still work. Also, compare them to a few modern buildings where hardly any context is required:

110. Covered Bridges, Historic Bridges, Oregon Department Of Transportation, Environm
Oregon Department of Transportation offers photographs and brief histories of a selection of the over 50 surviving spans in the state.
http://www.odot.state.or.us/eshtm/cb.htm
Welcome to the Covered Bridges page, presented by Environmental Services, Oregon Department of Transportation. Oregon has the largest collection of covered bridges in the western part of the United States, with over 50 extant covered spans. Because of the easy availability of forest resources in Oregon, most of the early bridges in the state were timber structures. These timber bridges were often covered to protect them from the weather. Now, the remaining examples of this obsolete bridge construction technology, generally located in pastoral rural settings, provide one of the most significant tourist attractions in the state. The bridge shown above is the Jordan Covered Bridge (1937), now lost. NEW!! ODOT's Bridge Section has recently completed a survey of Oregon's Covered Bridges, and has prepared a new website which includes information, photos, and maps to each of the covered bridges in the state. The file is assembled in PDF format, and requires Acrobat Reader to view. Additionally, the file size is large, and will take a few minutes to load using a dial-up modem connection. The online PDF version of the new Covered Bridges information and maps can be accessed here.

Federal Lands Highway Division Engineers The purpose of this memorandum is to solicit FY 2002 candidate bridge projects from the States for the preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration portion of the National Historic Covered Bridge Preservation Program (NHCBP). This program was established by Section 1224 of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21 st Century (TEA21), and provides funding to assist the States to preserve, rehabilitate, or restore the Nation's historic covered bridges. For the purposes of this program, the term "historic covered bridge" means a covered bridge that is listed or eligible for listing on the National Register for Historic Places. The program provides for two categories of projects. One is for grants to assist the States to rehabilitate, repair, and preserve the Nation's historic covered bridges. The second is for the conduct of research and technology transfer. The total amount authorized for this program in FY 2002 is $10 million, and although funds have not yet been appropriated, it is anticipated that funds will be available by the due date for applications.

DESTINATIONS The Bridges of Bennington County Exploring the Landmarks of Southern Vermont - Part I Adapted from Covered Bridges of Vermont by Ed Barna Vermont's covered bridges stand as symbols of an honored past and as proof of that past's enduring relevance. These tunnels into yesteryear recall the days when town selectmen would specify that a bridge be built"a load of hay high and wide" and when the resulting barn like structure would become, by turns, a kiosk for advertisements, a clubhouse for the neighborhood children, and an excuse for courting couples to steal a kiss while out on a drive. They are a delight to the eye, an almost natural expression of the forested landscape roundabout and an ornament to the hilly terrain's many splendid streams. Yet they are not simply quaint relics; the great majority continue to perform their original function, now carrying traffic even heavier than their designers had anticipated. If Vermont has the most covered bridges per square mile in the country, that is partly because many were built later than in other states. That, in turn, is because Vermont was long a frontier, where Indian raids and legal battles over land ownership limited settlement before the Revolutionary War.

WOODEN BRIDGES
Wood is the world's oldest bridge building material and, in Finland, bridges have always been constructed of wood. However, in the 1970s and 80s the percentages of bridges built with wood declined sharply, with concrete being the industry material of choice.
The Vihantasalmi Bridge is
the world's first wooden
highway bridge.
The bridge foundatation
can consist of a simple glued laminated timber slab
For the last ten years, developments in lamination techniques and new structural solutions have taken a turn in the opposite direction, with the percentage of bridges built using wood rapidly increasing. Vierumäen Teollisuus Oy has played a silnificant part in this trend. As long as 25 years, Vierumäen Teollisuus has manufactured and supplied wooden bridges. The appearance of a wooden bridge can be modern, ascetic or romantic, always fit for the circumstances and use. Pressure impregnated gluelam wood is most competitive material for bridges. A wooden bridge is light, no heavy foundations are needed. However, their load bearing capacity is high, gluelam wood bridges can, e.g. be dimensioned for total and axle weights.

Flood, fire and modernization have taken their toll on the covered bridges of Michigan. Where once hundreds of covered bridges spanned the State's rivers and creeks, now less than a dozen remain Though few in number compared with neighboring states, Michigan's covered bridges offer a diversity of settings and architectural styles spanning a broad range of history and culture. The remaining group includes original 19th century survivors, replicas of predecessors lost to the elements, and a transplant from Pennsylvania. Bridges Maps Links E-Mail ... Oregon's Covered Bridges
Most people think of quaint New England villages when they think of covered bridges, but Oregon also has it's share. Today, many are preserved next to new concrete spans and some have been converted into roadside parks, but there are still a wonderful few bridges that still serve Oregon's highways. In Oregon, covered bridges were a natural choice. Timber was abundant and inexpensive, and covered wooden bridges with timber trusses were still being erected well into the 1960’s. Times change though, and since the 1970’s, it has become apparent that our natural resources are diminishing. The cost of lumber began to inflate, and the cost of maintaining wooden spans was no longer acceptable. Concrete spans required less maintenance and were more durable. Even before these revelations came to light, Oregon’s covered bridges were already fast disappearing as steel spans and concrete spans seemed more practicable for wider, modern highways. Sometimes, the old wooden bridges were simply set on fire to clear the way for a modern structure. For a County Superintendent, decisions are based on economics, but for the area residents, the heart takes over. Those who live near these quaint structures have always been quite attached to them (see Rochester Bridge for an example). As more and more of these bridges were dismantled and demolished, more and more people began to realize that a covered bridge represents more than a simple conveyance utility, a covered bridge is part of the character of the communities in which they serve. They are one of those
