Vermont's Covered Bridges Tootin' Our Horn Normally, we don't bother with those awards you see all over some websites. We've been offered a number of them, but they are generally meaningless link exchanges, so we simply say, "Thanks, but no thanks." This one, however, is different. We actually put a lot of effort into something and have been recognized for it. Thanks to a group of Vermont photographers (including myself), Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine has what is believed to be the Web's only complete presentation of photographs and historical information on Vermont's Covered Bridges. Every one of 'em. StudyWeb took a look at it and liked it so much that they have included this feature in their Architecture section, calling it "one of the best educational resources on the Web." Additionally, National Geographic saw Dave MacKenzie's photo of the Cooley Bridge, and liked it enough to buy it for use in an upcoming magazine. Kate Pellegrini, Applied Architecture II - Shelburne Museum Bridge - The bridge project was very interesting and integrated building the bridge in the woodshop with finding mathematical formulae, drawing and constructing a "to-scale" model. The process began back in September with a 'Vermont Covered Bridges" field trip. Shelburne Museum Bridge's top section (on side) Back in September, the class visited five Vermont covered bridges. Our job was to learn about each bridge by taking measurements of each covered bridge. We visited the Quinlan, Sequin, Charlotte, Shelburne Museum and the Lake Shore bridge. We found a lot of similarities and differences between the bridge's sizes, constructions, trusses, arches and materials used. Each group of two or three people blindly picked a bridge. We picked the Shelburne Museum bridge. When we returned to school, the project was continued by deriving a formula of 1':2". Every measured chord and beam was adjusted to scale and those were the measurements that we would use for the building of the bridge.

History of Covered Bridges Why were bridges covered? Another positive reason why bridges were covered was that the roof strengthened the entire structure. "In Washington,…the cross-bracing of a roof…saved many a bridge from the strong northerly winds. Even so, a covered bridge [was] built like a giant wooden box kite. A 200-foot span…[would take] punches from a windstorm equal to a lateral thrust of 100 tons. At other times, weakening [was] inevitable from the constant and almost imperceptible pressure of the wind" (Adams, 27). These were the determining factors on whether or not a bridge would be covered. With advances in technology, bridges today are covered only for the reason of attracting tourists and paying sightseers. History of Covered Bridges The increase interest in the building of bridges attracted many carpenters and architects. "The most active and prominent of the Oregon bridge builders from 1973 to 1885 was the firm of A.S. Miller and Sons." (Nelson, 14). The reason for his success was that he "purchased a contractor’s franchise for exclusive rights to use the Smith truss in either Oregon or the Washington Territory" (Nelson, 15). The Smith truss was a much better and longer-lasting form of building compared to the other methods used. "Among the most important contributions of A.S. Miller & Sons to bridge building in Oregon was the person of Lord Nelson Roney, who in 1875 started his career as a bridge carpenter for that firm. After Roney’s experience with the Millers, he turned professional bridge builder, his opportunity being afforded by the 1881 flood which washed out more than the usual number of spans. ‘Nels’ Roney was probably the most productive covered bridge builder in Oregon’s history, and continued as such until the middle 1920’s, devoting fifty years of his life to the business. Even at the time of his death in 1944, several of his covered bridges stood as evidence of his conservative approach to bridge construction, and the last of many signs bearing the inscription, ‘Built by L.N. Roney,’ was not torn down until 1953" (Nelson, 33).

During the eighteenth century in this part of the US commerce was growing and there was an ever increasing need to be able to reliably transport goods across the often flooded creeks and rives. The most plentiful building material for bridges was wood. But left exposed, the life of the timbers was quite short. While covered bridges could provide protection from passing storms for travelers, the real reason for the covering is to protect the bridge's wood support structure, it's truss, from the weather to extend the life of the bridge. Taking pictures of local covered bridges started as a photographic self-assignment. My original goal was to make a good image of each bridge. I soon discovered that not all bridges are located in photogenic locals. That some bridges are located where they are never in good light. That there are many distracting road signs, power and telephone polls and wires located near covered bridges. And that around many of the bridges, and along the water ways they cross, there can be a lot of trees and underbrush. This last item meant that the best time to get a clean view of these bridges is when most of the leaves are off the trees. So the goal changed a bit: Where possible to create a good image and for the others to simply document the bridge and its present day environment.

Located on a tree-covered mesa cut by deep sandstone canyons, three natural bridges formed where meandering streams eroded the canyon walls. The bridges are named Kachina, Owachomo and Sipapu. At 6,500 feet above sea level, Natural Bridges is home to a variety of plants and animals. Plants range from the fragile cryptobiotic soil crusts to remnant stands of Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine. Natural Bridges was established in 1908, making it the oldest National Park Service site in Utah. Repeatedly occupied and abandoned during prehistoric times, Natural Bridges was first used during the Archaic period, from 7000 B.C. to A.D. 500. Only the rock art and stone tools left by hunter-gatherer groups reveal that humans lived here then.
