Icelandic Architecture: Buildings + Bridges
Camilla had been to Norway before, but this was my first experience of Scandinavian architecture and I got quite excited about it. Works Along the Way is a little book on notable Icelandic architecture using concrete, with photos and brief descriptions of some 120 structures, of which we saw maybe 20.

Lighting Dimensions
Feb, 2000 by Sharon Stancavage
In January 1998, Chicago's mayor, Richard M. Daley, returned from a trip to Paris brimming with inspiration. After viewing the lovely architectural lighting in that city, Daley told the newspapers that he wanted to illuminate the downtown area of his city. Enter Tracey Dear of Dear Productions. The LD was working as head of the lighting department of the House of Blues in Chicago, but was looking for a change from the music industry. He made some calls, and eventually ended up on the phone with the Cultural Office. "They asked me if I could light bridges, and I said, 'Why not?' " That simple answer propelled him into a $1.8 million project that culminated in Chicago's Downtown Lighting Master Plan. The project encompasses 11 bridgesLake Street, Franklin Street, Wells Street, LaSalle Street, Clark Street, Dearborn Street, State Street, Wabash Avenue, Michigan Avenue, Columbus Drive, and Lake Shore Drive. The bridges cover an area of 1.2mi. (1.9km) and are each separated by a city block; average bridge length is 70yds (64m). All the bridges are bascule types, hinged near a weighted end so they can be raised or lowered. "It's quite amazing how well-balanced these bridges are," Dear remarks.

During the 1910s the Colorado Highway Com-mis-sion generally eschewed timber trestles in favor of concrete and steel construction, and the Commission attempted to direct the counties away from timber construction as well. During the Depression, when labor was more plentiful than materials, and during World War II, when strategic materials such as concrete and steel were embargoed by the government, tim-ber was used extensively by the Highway Department for bridge construction. The trend continued into the 1950s, and timber pile bridges continue to be built today, but primarily at secondary lo-ca-tions such as forest roads. Next

The Neva and the bridges
Nevsky is crossed by three canals which are an integral part of St. Petersburg's beauty. There are a great number of rivers and canals in our city - it is a city "on water". That is why it is often referred to as "the Northern Venice" or "the Northern Amsterdam". There is no pleasure like taking a wonderful boat trip along rivers and canals of our "bridge city". Oh, the bridges! They will take your breath away. There are about 200 bridges in the city, and among the most beautiful ones are the Palace Bridge, the Trinity Bridge, the Foundry Bridge and the Bridge of Peter the Great across the Neva river, and the Anichkov Bridge across one of the canals - the Fontanka river. It is situated right in the Nevsky Prospect and is considered to be the most romantic place in our city! The Anichkov Bridge is so famous and loved by all for its four beautiful sculptures of men and horses! They are so expressive and dynamic that you would think they are alive! And each of the sculptures is different! prev next Contact us right now!

ODOT CULTURAL RESOURCES FAQ Why we are here? What do we do? The ODOT Cultural Resources staff identifies and evaluates historic resources along highway projects to determine potential eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. We examine the proposed project effects on those resources, and work with designers to evaluate possible alternatives which would avoid or minimize effects to the historic properties. We advise and coordinate with project teams on cultural resource issues, and when project effects cannot be avoided, we prepare requests for Determination of Eligibility (DOE), Cultural Reports, Section 106 Finding of Effect reports, Section 4(f) documents, and Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). We coordinate directly with the two regulatory agencies, the State Historic Preservation Office and FHWA. The cultural staff also reviews all findings, recommendations, and documents prepared by consultant forces prior to distribution to the regulatory agencies. What historic resource types need to be evaluated? What types of projects involve cultural resources?

Architects: John A. and Washington Roebling
Date Completed: 1883
Height: 272 feet (83 meters)
Length: 6016 feet (1834 meters)
The Brooklyn Bridge, highly recognizable landmark and cultural icon, was the dream of John A. Roebling, the inventor of wire cable and an accomplished bridge builder.
Designed in 1867, the bridge's prototype was a similar, though smaller structure over the Ohio River at Cincinnati.
The dramatic butressed gothic towers are constructed entirely of granite. The roadway platform is hung on two-inch diameter steel suspenders strung from two pairs of cables - the catenaries - sixteen inches in diameter.
Each cable is composed of 5,296 galvanized steel wires (the total length of wire used is 14,357 miles). Each of the four cables is capable of sustaining a live load of 12,000 tons. The opening of the bridge in 1883 was marred by the deaths of twelve pedestrians, who were trampled during a panic set off by a shouted warning, anonymous and groundless, that the bridge was in danger of imminent collapse.

Permanent handshakes extended across chasms of prejudice and misunderstanding. Romantic ideas like that are great for tourist brochures, but it gives us a headache. People see bridges as tall places to drive over or look down from. Our bridges here aren't symbols of anything; they're real rusting, riveted iron spans. They're mostly bridges to the 19th Century, but we find that handy since so much of our content lives there.
