THE CENTURY MAGAZINE APRIL, 1908 THE RAILWAY BEAUTIFUL BY SYLVESTER BAXTER WITH PICTURES BY HARRY FENN Great railway companies, as a rule, very naturally lay stress upon the attractiveness of the scenery along their lines; they spend enormous sums in the production and circulation of illustrated literature to make it known. Incidental to this attractiveness, in no small degree, are the improvements carried out in many parts of the country by various companies under policies of enlightened self-interest. Indeed, few things can make a more agreeable impression upon the traveler than glimpses of well-ordered and beautiful surroundings at the way-stations, caught perhaps only for a flashing instant in passing, or satisfying the eye during pauses that otherwise would be tedious. Where a railway passes through a town, the community commonly presents its least attractive aspect. The noise, the smoke, the dust, and the cinders make property that borders a railway line undesirable for residential purposes. Consequently it is left to the poorest sort of occupancy. A railway is customarily lined, if not by ugly factories, by squalid tenements, or by the shabby little houses of the poorer classes, with unkempt back yards, and outbuildings Aspects of this sort commonly convey about the only feature of a place obtained by passers-through. There are thousands of towns and villages in the United States that for hundreds of thousands of persons are associated only with scenes of this sort. In truth, however, the impressions made by these strips of shabbiness along the railway are as erroneous, as those which might be derived from a trip through the main sewer of a town. Just beyond, they might behold pleasant, tree-shaded streets, attractive homes, and a community well equipped with good public and business buildings; in short, a place where prosperity abides and good civic standards obtain.

Bridges: Design and Function

Use our free online Teaching Tools to create custom worksheets, puzzles and quizzes on this topic!
Students will: Understand the benefits and drawbacks of different types of bridges. Think about the challenges involved in building bridges. The class will need the following: Computers with Internet access (optional but very helpful) Reference materials on bridges Each group of three or four students will need the following: Research material about a particular bridge (Web sites and books suggested below) One long piece of butcher block paper Pencils, colored markers, and crayons Each student will need the following: Classroom Activity Sheet: Bridge Research (see printable version) Take-Home Sheet: Longest Suspension Bridges in the United States (see printable version) Introduce the lesson by showing the class a picture of a popular bridge, such the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco) or the Brooklyn Bridge (New York City). Ask students to imagine what might happen if all the bridges in New York City or San Francisco were suddenly shut down. Then help the class brainstorm some ways that bridges affect our lives. For example, you could remind students that food and other essential supplies are often transported across bridges.

The bridge which is known as either "çalak" or "çelenk" is a remnant of Daniþmend. It was built by Ýltekin Gazi in the 11th century. It is in the Helvacý district in Amasya on the Yeþilýrmak river. It is 70 metres in lenght and 4 metres in width. It has been repaired in different times and it has six arches.
    MEYDAN (SQUARE, STATION) BRIDGE
It is located above Yeþilýrmak in Khatun district. The middle of the bridge stands upright. The bridge has got four divisions and was built with yellow cube shaped stones. Later, its base was widened and then metal railings were added.
    KUÞ (KÜNÇ) BRIDGE
It is located in Þamlar District, upper-side of the Yeþilýrmak. It was the work of the Seljuks, built by Sultan Mesud's daughter Hundi Hatun. For a long time Kuþ Bridge had been called Hundi Hatun Bridge. The arches of the bridge are round and all are at the same size. The bridge was built with stones end bricks. It has four under divisions. It was also called Kunç bridge.
    ALÇAK (LOW) BRIDGE
The Low Bridge is on the Yeþilýrmak, opposite the Rock Tombs of Pontic Kings through the line of Girls Palace, between Hatuniye District and Ziya Pasha boulvard. It is the best example of Roman Period's architecture. It has concrete platform having four columns built of brick settled on Roman arches. In 1865, a wooden bridge was built by Ziya Pasha using the arches as a foot. After that bridge was ruined in 1882, it was rebuilt by using brick in 1883 and it was restored in 1940.

    Amsterdam, City of Bridges
Water and bridges are of vital importance to Amsterdam’s unique position among the historic cities of the north. Along the banks of the river Amstel a city developed that depended on the water for its survival. At one time water was even more important than dry land. After all, it was the water that allowed tradesmen to transport goods from A to B; it served to keep the enemy out and last but not least it contributed to the beauty of the city. No wonder Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the North In the course of time the number of bridges steadily increased. A map, prepared by Cornelis Antonisz in 1544, shows that 16th century Amsterdam had 52 bridges and 6 culverts. Pieter Bast’s map of circa 1600 includes 110 bridges and 10 culverts. As a result of the large-scale urban expansion of the early 17th century this number nearly doubled. When Gerred de Broen prepared his map, circa 1732, the urban expansion projects had been completed. By then there were 297 bridges and 9 culverts. After the 17th century expansion plans had been realised, the size of the city remained stable until the developments which followed the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century required a new approach. From circa 1860 onwards Amsterdam’s territory was extended beyond the Singelgracht and large residential areas were built to accommodate the needs of the ever increasing population. At that time the city centre underwent far-reaching changes as well. Several canals were filled in, a measure initially motivated by the stench and the atrocious hygiene. At a later stage canals were filled in in order to accommodate the needs of modern traffic and to create adequate thoroughfares which gave access to the newly built parts of the city. As a result many bridges were demolished. In many other cases the steep slopes of the original bridges were levelled to a certain extent in order to allow for the electrical trams to pass.

    Leaf Bridges
During the 19th century, as a result of the advancing technological developments, the design of the Amsterdam bridges underwent far-reaching changes. Iron and steel came to be used as construction materials and architects started to explore the possibilities these new materials offered. Moreover, many arched bridges were widened and levelled to accommodate the needs of modern traffic. From circa 1860 onwards large numbers of traditional arched bridges were replaced by flat leaf bridges. The majority of the 20th century leaf bridges are characteristic of the style we call the Amsterdam School of Architecture. Bridge 246: Amstel/Sarphatistraat (Hogesluis, 1883). A monumental double bascule bridge designed by Springer. The span of this bridge is very long (subdivided into 10 sections). Note the rich decoration: cast iron ornaments (with coats of arms), sandstone vases and obelisks and matching lanterns. Bridge 246: Amstel/Sarphatistraat (Hogesluis, 1883). Detail, obelisk serving as lamppost. The 19th century derived inspiration from older traditions and foreign cultures. Bridge 236: Amstel/Amstelstraat (Blauwbrug, 1884). The so-called Blue Bridge was designed by De Greef and Springer. It belongs to the category of fixed leaf bridges. Note the splendid pillars which combine brick and sandstone ornaments in the shape of ships’ bows; marble pillars with masks and crowns; sandstone vases.

    How to Photograph Architecture (Exterior)
by Philip Greenspun Home Learn : One Article This is an example-based tutorial on photographing buildings.
Your pictures need not be pretty
Architectural photography at its best will convey the experience of being in and around a built environment. In the case of the Dachau Concentration Camp , this won't result in comforting attractive images. Below is a parking garage in Kyoto . The colors and industrial appearance of the structure are remarkable in the middle of a city known for its ancient temples and gardens. The purpose of the image is to capture the feeling of walking by the structure, not to delight or decorate. A supermarket exterior is a subject that will probably never make a wall-worthy image by itself. However, the image below (from the Hawaii flowers collection ) captures the spirit of being in the parking lot at night:
    Give old buildings some space
In general, the older the structure, the more environmental context is required. Using your hands or your mind, crop the preceding images to include just the structures and see if they would still work. Also, compare them to a few modern buildings where hardly any context is required:
