Cahan, M.D., F.A.C.S. and C. Staying Abreast.com provides a brief overview of the program, which is being implemented internationally by physicians, nurses, hospitals, physical therapy centers, lymphedema clinics, fitness rehabilitation facilities, and by individuals who are managing their own fitness programs.
Annie Toglia has been nominated for her work on behalf of breast cancer and lymphedema patients by New York State Senator Nicholas A. Spano for the 2004 Woman of Distinction award, which she will receive in an official ceremony on June 8 in the State Capitol. -

Skip navigation The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program is to eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities.
New Funding Directions: Building on Our Strengths
In 1993, breast cancer advocates from across California converged on Sacramento to demand a new breast cancer research funding agency dedicated to supporting high impact research. From this activism the California Breast Cancer Research Program was born. Since its inception, the CBCRP has distributed nearly $150 million for more than 500 grants to more than 60 leading research institutions throughout California, so that they can investigate ideas about breast cancer that might not otherwise be explored.

Thorough breast cancer surgery may make radiation unnecessary
May 13, 1999 Web posted at: 2:37 p.m. EDT (1837 GMT) (CNN) Patients with a common, curable form of breast cancer may be undergoing radiation treatments unnecessarily, according to a study in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. The University of Southern California study of women with "ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)," a cancer of the milk glands of the breast, found that among 133 women whose surgeons removed a 10-millimeter margin around the tumor, the chance of the cancer reappearing after eight years was 4 percent. But when the margin of additional tissue removed was less than 1 millimeter, the risk jumped to 50 percent.

Our Mission
Defining breast cancer as a political issue, the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition challenges all obstacles to the eradication of this disease. The MBCC has always viewed breast cancer as a political disease and we feel even stronger about that view today as we engage in discussions and actions related to environmental research into the causes of breast cancer, access to health care, and the misleading advertising of prescription drugs.

Oral contraceptives and breast cancer
FROM Oral contraceptives and breast cancer: Women with a strong family history of breast cancer who had taken older oral contraceptives may have an increased risk of developing breast cancer, a new study indicates. Oral contraceptives containing the hormones estrogen and progestin have been on the market for over 35 years. Those formulated before 1975 were more likely to have higher doses of both, but since 1975 they have had lower doses to reduce side effects and the risk of vascular disease.

My experience with breast cancer (illustrated)
by Patricia Murray
Introduction
In May 1985 I had a left-breast mastectomy after being diagnosed with stage ductal carcinoma. Over the next two years I explored reconstruction options and then proceeded with reconstruction. During the course of the experience I took many photographs of myself documenting the different stages and the changing bodily landscape. This document is a narrative of my experience combined with many of these photographs. I created this Web project in the hopes of demystifying the process and providing an educational as well as encouraging resource for others faced with breast cancer and for their friends and loved ones. Except as noted, I made the photographs myself using either a Nikon 35mm camera or a Hasselblad medium-format camera. I am 56 years old and live in Providence, Rhode Island with eight cats. All of the small photographs in the following narrative can be clicked on to produce larger copies of the same images.

156. Breast Cancer

http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc06.html
Breast Cancer March 2002 WHAT IS BREAST CANCER? Breast cancers are potentially life-threatening malignancies that develop in one or both breasts. The structure of the female breast is important in understanding this cancer:
  • The interior of the female breast consists mostly of fatty and fibrous connective tissues.
  • It is divided into about 20 sections called lobes.
  • Each lobe is further subdivided into a collection of lobules, which are structures that contain small milk-producing glands.
  • These glands secrete milk into a complex system of tiny ducts. The ducts carry the milk through the breast and converge in a collecting chamber located just below the nipple.
  • Breast cancer is either noninvasive (generally known as in situ, that is, confined to the site of origin) or invasive (spreading).
Noninvasive Breast Cancer Noninvasive breast cancers include the following:
  • Ductal carcinoma in situ (also called intraductal carcinoma or DCIS). DCIS consist of cancer cells in the lining of the duct. DCIS is a non-invasive, early cancer, but if left untreated, it may sometimes progress to an invasive, infiltrating ductal breast cancer.
  • Lobular carcinoma in situ
