INVOLUNTARY SMOKING CAUSES BREAST CANCER TOO Being around people who are smoking, even as little as one hour a day, can almost triple a woman's risk of contracting breast cancer, the second leading cause of deaths among all American women, and the leading cause of death among middle-aged women. This is the finding of a new study Dr. Alfredo Morabia recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Morabia headed a team of researchers from the University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, that analyzed the smoking habits and exposure of nearly 1300 women. Among their findings: Just smoking fewer than 10 cigarettes a day was enough to double a woman's risk of breast cancer. Smoking 10 to 19 cigarettes a day saw the risk jump almost five fold. Women who were exposed to cigarette smoke for one hour per day for 12 consecutive months nearly tripled their risk of contracting this deadly disease. More women die of breast cancer than from any other cancer. It is now the second leading cause of death in American women. Last year doctors diagnosed cancer of the breast in 182,000 women, and 46,000 died from it. It kills more middle-age women than any other disease. Every fifteen minutes at least three women will develop breast cancer and one will die.

"We have reason to believe, based on the statistics, that there is some environmental connection or cause between the advent of the disease in an individual's life and the living conditions here on Long Island," Clinton said Thursday. Clinton said the proposal would be a $10 million increase over the previous year's budget allocations. Researchers at the University of California Los Angeles have found that some cases of prostate cancer involved the HER-2 gene, usually associated with breast cancer. The bioengineered drug Herceptin has been successful in blocking excessive HER-2 growth in late-stage breast cancer patients. The presence of HER-2 in prostate cancer patients raises the possibility that the drug may be helpful to men as well. Nearly 200,000 American men develop prostate cancer every year and about 40,000 die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the second-deadliest form of cancer among men, behind lung cancer. Doctors have known since 1941 that prostate cancer is stimulated by androgens, or male sex hormones. The standard treatment has been to surgically or chemically castrate patients to eliminate the tumor's source of hormones.

While both the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association believe that most patients require a longer hospital stay, "drive-through" mastectomies have become an unwelcome reality for women who are battling breast cancer. Against the advice of their doctors, thousands of women must leave the hospital while still in pain, groggy with anesthesia and with drainage tubes still in place. The House version of the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act is co-sponsored by 153 members of Congress from both sides of the aisle. Doctors said early detection might be saving more lives. From 1995 to 1998, deaths from breast cancer fell 3.4 percent; prostate cancer, 4.5 percent; colorectal cancer, 1.3 percent; and lung cancer, 0.8 percent. However, the number of new breast cancer cases rose 1.2 percent per year, from 1992 to 1998. Mammography and early detection have helped to raise incidence rates, said Brenda Edwards of the National Cancer Institute, the final author of the report. "We think that there may be some changes in both the clinical management, surgical management, looking for nodes and the way they're being diagnosed pathologically that may be helping us find more," Edwards said. The figures come from an annual report that is a collaborative effort by the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
