History Repeats Itself...So They Say...
Peruvians and Brazilians of Japanese descent (Nikkei Peruvians and Nikkei Brazilians) living in Oizumi are part of a larger group of Nikkei Peruvians and Nikkei Brazilians living throughout Japan. This section will outline the following: (1) Japanese migration to Peru and Brazil beginning in 1899 and 1908 and continuing through the early portion of this century. (2) The return migration of Peruvians and Brazilians of Japanese descent to Japan in the 1990s.
Japanese emigration began in 1868 "in moments of turmoil as the new Meiji government replaced the Tokugawa shogunate" (Gardiner 1975: 23). Having first flocked to the Kingdom of Hawaii and the United States, the Japanese were becoming familiar with eastward emigration by 1899. Thus, when the Japanese government was then "denied the opportunity to send further emigrants to Hawaii and the U.S.," it was eager to look to Peru [and Brazil] as a potential destinations for Japanese (and Okinawan) workers (Takenaka 1997: 15).
The first Japanese settlers arrived on Peruvian shores in 1899 with temporary intentions of making money and returning to Japan. However, the majority stayed in Peru, battled disease and difficulty, but by "the end of 1909, of the total of 6,295 immigrants to Peru, 5, 158 still lived there" (Gardiner 1975: 29). Japanese migration to Peru continued at a steady increase until "1923, when Japanese migration to Peru by contract was abolished" (Gardiner 1975: 33).

History of Brazil
Series. Colonial Brazil Empire of Brazil History of Brazil (1889-1930) History of Brazil (1930-1964) ... History of Brazil (1964-present) Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal , Brazil was an independent monarchy from to . Even under the Old Republic ( ), however, agrarian oligarchies continued to dominate the central and state governments. Following the Revolution, the landed elites were pushed aside and the state played an active role in pursuing industrial and agricultural growth and development of the interior. Years of "regime change" in , and introduced protracted adjustment that involved some authoritarian rule. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, Brazil is today South America 's leading economic power, the world's ninth largest economy, and fifth most populous nation. Highly unequal income distribution, however, remains a pressing problem. These socio-economic contradictions helped usher Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva , Brazil's first elected leftwing president, into the presidency in When Pedro Cabral reached the coast of Brazil on April 22, 1500, the pre-Columbian indigenous Indian population was widely scattered and probably numbered no more than 1 million people. In 1532, Sao Vicente became the first permanent Portuguese settlement in Brazil, located in the state of Sao Paulo. Initially, development was slow and was based upon a feudal system in which favored individuals received title to large blocks of land called capitanias. Sugarcane, grown in plantations along the northeast coast, became the base of the first major economic cycle in Brazil because of the high demand for sugar in Europe. Settlers used native labor to work the fields, often furnished by the Bandeirantes, as the pioneers from the state of Sao Paulo were know. When the natives proved insufficient in numbers, or unable to withstand the hard labor and European diseases, depending on the story, the importation of millions of slaves from Africa began.

    Royalty in Brazil
Brazil is the largest country in South America; in fact, it takes up half the continent of South America, and is the fifth-largest country in the world both in size and population. Its official language is Portuguese. The name Brazil came from a tree, the brazilwood or pau brasil (also called pernambuco), which was once plentiful in Brazil but is now threatened with extinction. People have been living in Brazil for more than 11,000 years. After the discovery of the New World by European explorers, Portugal laid claim to Brazil. The Dutch took over parts of Brazil in the 17th century, but they were eventually driven out by Brazilians. After the French under emperor Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Portugal in 1807, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil. In March 1808 they reached the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, where they remained for more than a decade. Even after the defeat of Napoleon, Portuguese king John VI chose to keep the Portuguese government and royal court in Brazil. When King John finally returned to Portugal in 1821, he left his son Dom Pedro behind to serve as Brazil's regent. In September of the following year, Pedro declared Brazil's independence from Portugal. He became its first emperor, Pedro I.
