Brazilian Culture
Three major contributions to Brazilian Culture:
Indian, Portuguese and African
The Indians The Portuguese first arrived in Brazil on April 22, 1500. This occasion has been duly commemorated in a carnival song. We know quite a lot about what they found, in musical terms, thanks to two extraordinary accounts of the music of Brazilian aboriginals dating from the 16th century. The French Calvinist pastor and writer Jean de LÈry published in 1578 a book called Viagem ý Terra do Brasil (Journey to the Land of Brazil), in which there were included illustrations, detailed descriptions of dances and rituals, and transcriptions of some musical refrains of the Tupis. Gabriel Soares de Sousa, a Portuguese colonist and chronicler, described in his 1587 treatise called Tratado Descritivo do Brasil the songs, dances and musical instruments of several tribes. He says that the Tamoios "are great musicians and dancers, and composers of improvised songs" and that the Tupinamb·s "carry in their right hand a marac·, a gourd filled with pebbles." Brazilian Indian instruments still consist basically of those of percussion: rattles, drums, etc. and wind: flutes, whistles, and horns.

"Your experience in Salvador is going to be unique. You will find a mixture of people and cultures unlike anywhere else in the world..."
- Walkiria Brown, Brazil Country Director
Brazil is such a large country that it can be considered a region on its own. It comprises more than half of the continent of South America; its beaches, rainforests, mountains, and plains are some of the most beautiful anywhere. When you travel to Brazil you'll find a wider range of flora and fauna than in any other country in the world. One of the most diverse nations, Brazil has a population made up of people of European, Asian, Arab, African and indigenous descent. Because Brazil was colonized by Portugal in the early eighteen hundreds, its language is Portuguese, but its culture is a unique mix of international influences. Regardless of their backgrounds, the people are uniquely Brazilian and are famed for their seemingly limitless optimism.

It offers courses comprising beginning, intermediate, and advanced Portuguese language, and Brazilian culture and literature. Bossa Nova? What Bossa Nova? Your knowledge of American pop culture is surprisingly deep in some areas and nil in others. You know brazilian soap opera.

Are you brasileiro
by Emilio Neto Now, in addition to checking if you're American or French , thanks to Emilio, you can see if you where you really belong is in o Brasil, terra do samba e pandeiro...
M.R.
If you're Brazilian...
  • You believe in personal freedom in an individualistic way. You don't see any connection between this and politics.
  • You believe in God. You may, or may not, care for any organized religion. If you do, you may belong to several different religious affiliations at the same time.
  • A Indomada
  • You know lots of things about football (soccer). If you're male, you have your own list of the 11 players who should start for the national team. You know something about volleyball and basketball. You are curious about American football but baseball is absolutely incomprehensible.
  • You have four weeks of vacation guaranteed by law. You can sell half of it back to your boss.
  • McDonald's and other American-style franchises are more expensive and more highly regarded, as a place to go for a quick meal, than the traditional neighborhood bar/eatery ( botequim
  • If you're middle class or up (about 50-70 million people), you have telephone, TV and VCR, and one or more bathrooms at your place. You don't need heating and may not have air conditioning. You pay someone to do your laundry and other household chores like cleaning and cooking. You're quite fastidious about neatness: yout house is very clean and you take one or (during summer) more showers a day.

88. Brazilian Language And Culture Program
Portuguese as a Second Language Program stressing natural language acquisition. Besides grammar and phonology, includes capoeira and samba lessons, and cultural traveling on weekends. Small town, safe environment.
http://www.english.sk.com.br/sk-psl.html
BRAZILIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
  • To disseminate the Brazilian language and culture overseas, To disseminate foreign languages and cultures in Brazil, To research and develop language teaching methodology based on Krashen's theory of language acquisition and Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism, To promote the understanding of the world and global awareness through an open exchange of ideas, values, and beliefs.
  • There are two ways to join the program: as a paying client, choosing dates suitable to you, getting intensive instruction and total immersion, and as a volunteer trainee, training in our cultural exchange program and language teaching approach, and submitting to our school-semester dates. THE SETTING: Santa Cruz do Sul Santa Cruz tends to be different than the typical images that people have of Brazil. It is prosperous and safe compared to other Brazilian cities. We are 100 miles (160 km.) from Porto Alegre, the largest city, the state capital and the nearest commercial airport. The main economic activity of Santa Cruz is farm production, processing and exporting of leaf tobacco. Other industries are clothing, corn seed production, machinery, and rubber. There is also a small university, however not strong in linguistics. Strong economic measures to contain inflation in the 90's made the cost of living in Brazil, which had always been low, became comparable to the cost of living in the U.S. for a few years. As of February 99, after a strong devaluation of the Brazilian real, and a continuous devaluation during 2001/02, the cost of living has become a lot cheaper again. Santa Cruz is even cheaper than big cities and it might also be a better place to make friends and learn the culture.

Hello! My name is Maria Inez Couto de Almeida. I was born in Lisbon - Portugal. When I was 5 years old my family came to Brazil - Rio de Janeiro. Here I grew up, studied - I'm graduated in Psychology by UERJ and English by S.B.C.I. Here I married, had a daughter, divorced. Ifa society is Yfatosin.
I have also gathered several the Yoruba tales (more than 100). It was a long work, which took a lot of time. In 98-99 I have gathered a lot of data about how to cast the Ifa shells. I would be very happy in receiving messages from people interested in Yoruba, Efon, , Umbanda, etc., to meet new friends, and to transmit and develop my studies. emerged in th 19th century as part of pre-Lenten Carnival festivities in Rio de Janeiro . During the 1920s samba groups were organized into "schools" that would compete against one another during Carnival for prizes. Samba , which also refers to an accompanying dance form, is of African origin, with its percussion-dominated rhythms being traced to religious possession dances. The various drums, or bateria , are considered powerful instruments with supernatural connections to pagan gods."
