Afro-Brazilian Culture and Politics
- Book Review, by Kraay, Hendrik
From the Publisher

The essays in this book constitute an analytic survey of the last two centuries of Afro-Bahian history, with a focus squarely on the difficult relationship between Afro- and Euro-Bahia and on the continual Afro-Bahian struggle to create a meaningful culture in an environment either hostile or suffocating in its ability to absorb elements of Afro-Bahian culture.
From The Critics
Booknews

Eight essays explore the relationship of Afro-Brazilian culture to both the state and the larger Brazilian culture over the past couple centuries. Focusing on the distinctive coastal state of Bahia, scholars from the fields of anthropology, history, and political science examine such topics as: the black militia in the decade after independence, the growth of the Candomb religion , land reform and social mobility, state cultural policies, and contemporary cultural movements. 64. Brazilian Cultural Influence In Portugal
brazilian culture in Portugal. by José Leon Machado. No one need fear that brazilian culture or the Brazilian language will take over.
http://www.portcult.com/Portugal.63.BRAZILIAN_INFLUENCE.htm
Brazilian Culture in Portugal by José Leon Machado (Translation by Ray Charles) The influence of Brazilian culture in Portugal is a myth that was created twenty five years ago, precisely at the time when Portuguese television began to broadcast the episodes of Brazilian soap operas produced by TV Globo. The topic awakened heated debates among intellectuals, sociologists, writers, and linguists. It was thought at the time that Portuguese culture and language would be totally submerged by the daily flood of soap operas filled wth the soft pronunciation of South American Portuguese. Portuguese intellectuals feared that the ten million inhabitants of their nation would, suddenly, begin to modify the pronunciation of their forefathers and also employ strange expressions like "estou de cuca cheia", isto é uma droga, "bater um papo", etc. More than twenty five years after the first soaps were broadcast, the influence noted is very tenuous, almost nothing. The Portuguese did not change their phonetic system and the Brazilian expressions that came into Continental Portuguese are so few that we can hardly say that our cultural identity is in danger. What has happened to defraud the most pessimistic expectations of our intellectuals? In the first place, we should say that the Portuguese people are resistant to change. Linguistic changes are an example of this. The phonetic system of Continental Portuguese, rigid and hierarchical, does not tolerate vowels and consonants that do not belong to its eight-hundred year old linguistic system. The Portuguese love to hear Brazilians speak, but unless they go to live in Brazil and pick up the local variety, they can only imitate them very poorly.
