Introduction
Music is a universal language. It crosses cultural and ethnic backgrounds. People relate to music through expressive and receptive communication. Music is the heart of Brazil. From a simple family gathering to carnaval. Music is the foundation for many of their festivities. In many religious ceremonies the music is one of the main focal points. Brazilian music as well as music in general is soothing, healing, inspiring, and energizing. Music influences Brazilian life a great deal. We will investigate the history of music in Brazil as well as making discoveries of the different sounds and styles of music. We’ll learn about cultural events and how the music is depicted culturally. In collaboration with team members we will investigate a variety of experiments to incorporate the science of sound for a science fair project. Utilizing our music teacher instruments will be made and students taught how to play them. Before each section is introduced the students will know what will be covered in the lesson. Information should be posted on blackboard or poster board. An oral discussion of information is shared by teacher. Questions asked orally (inferential) and in written form. Quizzes and tests will be teacher made. The types of tests will be objective, matching or multiple choice.

  • Capoeira Angola and Forro tours are designed especially to give students some insights into Brazilian culture.
Salvador is the capital of Bahia, the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, home of such Brazilian musical groups as Olodum and Ilê Aiyê and the birthplace of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, among many other artists. Salvador has the largest street carnival in Brazil. Large sound trucks ("Trio Elétrico") playing Axé and pagode (two Brazilian styles of music) proceed through the streets, each followed by a huge number of people dancing and partying from mid-afternoon late into the night. The second biggest festival in Brazil is Sao Joao ( Saint John ) and takes place in the middle of June. It´s very popular in the North-East and the rhythim of Sao Joao is FORRO. Forro is a catchy, "hick" dance music that is played everywhere during the winter months. Traditionally, it features a drum, accordion and triangle, but also has modern influences, such as the eletric guitar. Forro events, such as clubs and concerts always have live forro music. This helps to create the atmosphere, but really it is the attitude of the Brazilian people that makes going to a forro so much fun. Everyone is busy chatting, flirting, dancing and drinking persimmon liquor, the popular drink of Sao Joao. Capoeira is a martial art that was created by African slaves, about 400 years ago. Everything starts with the berimbau ( the traditional instrument used in Capoeira ). It ditates the speed and type of movements. There are two kinds of Capoeira, Capoeira Regional and Capoeira Angola. Capoeira Angola is the oldest form of Capoeira and such is a slower, more earthy game. Capoeira Regional is the newest form of Capoeira, and it is faster and more acrobatic. Capoeira develops mental balance, and combines self defense, music, and the profound sense of art all at once.

Aloísio Magalhães
Founder and Director, Centro Nacional de Referência Cultural Adapted from texts reprinted in: Aloíso de Magalhães, E Triunfo? A questão dos bens culturais no Brasil . Rio de Janeiro: Editora Nova Fronteira, 1997, pp. 54-71. One of the greatest problems which nations of the modern world face is the loss of cultural identity. That is, the progressive reduction in the values that belong to them and which distinguish one country from another. This loss of cultural identity is one of the negative facets of the accelerated process of universal integration which is driven by technological advances and propagated by means of industrial production and audiovisual communications. The first threat comes from the scale of mass production which structures standardized consumption patterns on a broad scale even if these patterns are not easy assimilated by the diverse cultures which consume products produced by great industrial complexes, and especially multinational corporations. The second threat, intimately tied to the first, permits anyone access to events occurring anywhere in the international mosaic. In the majority of cases, the pairing of mass communication and mass production has produced only a false integration. This false integration is most often seen in behavioral changes such as the proliferation of unjustified needs and unattainable aspirations.

Brazil ABSTRACT Recent trends in creativity research have pointed out that creativity is a sociocultural phenomenon. As a consequence, the effect of cultural factors on the manifestation of creativity has been discussed worldwide. The purpose of this chapter is, therefore, to analyze the development of creativity in the Brazilian culture. A brief description of the Brazilian culture is provided. Models of creativity developed by Brazilian researchers, as well as a review of creativity studies conducted in the educational and workplace environment, are presented. Guidelines for future cross-cultural studies on creativity are also suggested. INTRODUCTION This chapter examines the development of creativity in the Brazilian culture. The first section includes a brief description of the Brazilian culture, and the second section presents two models of creativity developed by Brazilian researchers. The third section reviews studies conducted in the educational environment and discusses their implications. The final section provides guidelines for future cross-cultural studies on creativity.

BBC News Online Magazine
There's a bit of a run on all things Brazilian. Its films, fashion, sports, music and people are hot, hot, hot. Why the sudden taste for all things Latin American?
Rio comes to rainy London A little bit of Rio de Janeiro has come to the UK. A 14m-high replica of that city's Jesus the Redeemer spreads his arms over a rain-washed city street to mark Selfridges' month-long Brasil 40 festival in London, Birmingham and Manchester. And its not just those flocking to the department stores which have let a bit of Latin spirit go to their heads. The music of South America's biggest country features in TV ads, in clubs, in shops; two acclaimed Brazilian films, Carandiru and Bus 174, are playing in cinemas, which distributors hope will echo the success of City of God; and its designers are taking the fashion and interiors world by storm. Carnival brights and vibrant prints are hot in home decoration, and humble Brazilian flip-flops - the rubber sandals worn by the country's president, supermodels and street kids alike - are set to be this summer's hottest shoes. Havaianas have already taken the US and Australia by storm, and now the UK importer is selling 50,000 pairs a week.

Beachwear crackdown bares paradox in Brazilian culture
By Kevin G. Hall, Knight Ridder, The Seattle Times,
Thursday 20 January 2000, 06:59 a.m. Pacific
RIO DE JANEIRO - The city known for its scantily clad Carnival dancers and anything-goes approach to sexuality is abuzz. Rio de Janeiro state police arrested a couple over the weekend after the woman refused to cover up her breasts on the beach. They clubbed her boyfriend - in his 60s - when he tried to intervene. While the scandal ostensibly is over toplessness, the incident is a window into Brazilian culture, where religion and pleasure collide and arbitrary actions by police largely go unpunished. Brazil boasts the world's largest Roman Catholic population but is constantly at odds with the Vatican over television ads promoting birth control, wide acceptance of the African-origin Candomble religion and sexual liberalism. Brazilians were surprised when police began cracking down on topless sunbathing last weekend - something the governor of Rio state says will not be repeated. Many Brazilians were outraged and complained of hypocrisy, noting that in early March many Carnival participants will be wearing only a tampa sexo
