Preserving Brazilian Culture Juliana Zanchett from Brazil
As most countries, Brazil has frequently been influenced by aspects of American culture. Fast food and music are becoming part of Brazilians' lives. I don't think that this inflluence is really bad, and I'm sure it is not such a big influence; a hamburger could never be more important than our Brazilian rice and beans . If that ever happened, I would really be worried. Nowadays we are learning to appreciate our traditional food such as our traditional cheese bread . We are also making good films which are being watched in the whole world, such as Central Station Also, Brazilian musicians are selling more CDs than most American music groups. I think that we are accepting aspects of American culture, but we still love our own culture and we are preserving it.

Yara Berg from Brazil
Almost all aspects of American pop culture such as McDonald's, American films, and blue jeans can be seen in Brazil. My father, who had leftist orientated ideas, used to say that all kinds of American cultural icons were distasteful. When I was a child, it was forbidden to drink coke and to chew chewing gum in my house. Both actions were representative of the American dominance to my father, Incongruently, he had an American Ford car. My father died 32 years ago, and I wonder how he would feel seeing his daughter politically centered, a diet coke addict, sometimes chewing Wrigley's juicy fruit gum, and living in the United States. He didn't live long enough to see this and the spread of American culture in the last decades. He would probably be convinced that American pop culture was swamping Brazil. I think it is difficult to curb American cultural hegemony. Many years ago, there was an attempt to reduce the number of American films in Brazil. The government imposed a law that all cinemas should show a higher percentage of Brazilian movies. However, we didn't have enough good films, or even enough films, to show. So, in spite of government subsidies, this measure failed soon after.

Culture
Brazilian culture has been shaped not only by the Portuguese, who gave the country its most common religion and language, but also by the country's native Indians, the considerable African population, and other settlers from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Brazilian music has always been characterized by great diversity and, shaped by musical influences from three continents, is still developing new and original forms. The samba , which reached the height of popularity in the 1930s, is a mixture of Spanish bolero with the cadences and rhythms of African music. Its most famous exponent was probably Carmen Miranda, known for her fiery temperament and fruity headdresses. The more subdued bossa nova , popular in the 1950s and characterized by songs such as 'The Girl from Ipanema', was influenced by North American jazz. Tropicalismo is a mix of musical influences that arrived in Brazil in the 1960s and led a more electric samba . More recently, the

by Chris McGowan orginally published September 3, 2003,
with an update after the recall election When California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger flew down to Rio to make a film in 1983, he didn’t do it in quite the same way that Bob Hope and Bing Crosby did in 1947 in one of their most famous “Road To” movies. No, Arnold visited Brazil to host a video called “Party In Rio” in which he acts as a leering tour guide to the bawdier aspects of Rio de Janeiro’s famed Carnaval celebration. The mature-rated adventure, directed in 1983 by Shep Morgan and released in 86 by Elite Entertainment , is out of print today but is a fitting video accompaniment to Schwarzenegger’s notorious “Oui” magazine interview in 1977, in which he discussed group sex at the gym, hashish smoking and other indiscretions. "Party In Rio" shows Arnold groping, leering and acting like, well, a stupid gringo.

The Promotion of Brazilian Culture in the United States
One of the main tasks of the cultural section of the Brazilian Embassy is to promote Brazilian culture in the United States. For this reason, the cultural section tries to organize and endorse events which reflect the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture. The Embassy has focused on accomplishing a few important projects of recognizable quality, aimed at achieving a greater impact on the American public and media. The cultural section also creates activities designed to promote the Brazilian culture among students and general public. Many schools, particularly High Schools, visit the Embassy looking for historic, artistic, social and cultural information about Brazil. The Brazilian-American Cultural Institute ( BACI ) is also in charge of promoting Brazilian culture in the U.S. In addition to offering Portuguese classes, it hosts performances, exhibits, as well as Brazilian films by Brazilian artists. BRAZIL
History
T
he Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in the area, led by adventurous Pedro Cabral, who began the colonial period in 1500. The Portuguese reportedly found native Indians numbering around seven million. Most tribes were peripatetic, with only limited agriculture and temporary dwellings, although villages often had as many as 5000 inhabitants. Cultural life appears to have been richly developed, although both tribal warfare and cannibalism were ubiquitous. The few remaining traces of Brazil's Indian tribes reveal little of their lifestyle, unlike the evidence from other Andean tribes. Today, fewer than 200,000 of Brazil's indigenous people survive, most of whom inhabit the jungle areas.
Other Portuguese explorers followed Cabral, in search of valuable goods for European trade but also for unsettled land and the opportunity to escape poverty in Portugal itself. The only item of value they discovered was the pau do brasil (brazil wood tree) from which they created red dye. Unlike the colonizing philosophy of the Spanish, the Portuguese in Brazil were much less focused at first on conquering, controlling, and developing the country. Most were impoverished sailors, who were far more interested in profitable trade and subsistence agriculture than in territorial expansion. The country's interior remained unexplored.

Rio's Carnaval 2001 Opens to Record Crowds SAMBA SCHOOLS UNITED IN CLOSEST CARNAVAL COMPETITION Story Filed: Friday February 23, 2001 10:24 AM EST Photos: AP Rio de Janeiro, Feb 23, 2000 (EFE via COMTEX) Carnival is usually a time for Brazilians to escape their troubles, but this year Rio's samba schools will not let them forget one of their society's worst scourges: the spiral of violence. Carnival celebrations kicked off today, Friday, just five days after 20,000 inmates seized 29 jails in Brazil's largest-ever prison revolt. But way before this week's rebellion, the men and women who create Carnival themes had already decided on an anti-violence theme. More than half of the top 14 samba schools will feature peace and violence in their lyrics and on their floats, giving the pageant of 2001 the unofficial title of Carnival of Peace. "We are transforming Carnival into a kind of protest," said Joaosinho Trinta, the famed artistic director of Grande Rio school. "In this time of violence and corruption ... a Carnival of Peace is being born out of necessity."

PURCHASE HERE A well researched and well-written account of Spiritism among contemporary Brazilians. Brazilian Spiritism is an important middle-class religious movement whose followers believe in communication with the dead via spirit mediums and in healing illnesss by means of spiritual therapies. Unlike Anglo-Saxon Spiritualists, Brazilian Spiritualists count among their number a well developed and institutionalized intellectual elite that has reinterpreted northern hemisphere parapsychology and developed its own alternative medicine and sociology of religion. Hess examines Spiritism in the context of religion, science, political ideology, medicine and even the social sciences. Dr. Hess wrote this book for his Ph.D thesis and did a wonderful job. The Kardecian Spiritists of Brazil are about as inscrutable as the Sphinx. Many streams have fed the river of Brazilian Kardec Spiritism and David Hess traces each and every one. This is a must read for anyone interested in the mediumistic religions of Brazil. Return to Homepage
