SambaLá's goal is to spread Brazilian culture and carnival throughout the Southern California are through costume, music, and dance. Every First Saturday SambaLa’ meets every 1st Saturday of the month at Club Samba at Tony's French Dips to perform, give classes, and dance to live music. Shows SambaLá has performed over 400 professional shows since its beginnings in 1994 in such places as Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, and even a McDonald’s commercial. more... The Brazilian Cultural Center of New England (BCCNE) is a recently-formed organization dedicated to the promotion, preservation, and advancement of Brazilian culture, especially Afro-Brazilian cluture and the performing arts. The Center is home to two long-standing performing entitites, Capoeira Camara and Samba Camara, and provides instruction in traditional instrument making, and training and performance opportuniteis for capoeira and samba dance and drumming. Mestre Deraldo Ferreira , founder and Artistic Director of the BCCNE, brings to the BCCNE a twenty-three year tenure in Capoeira and a similar lifetime involvement and commitment to samba drumming, musical composition, and choreography. Capoeira Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that was developed among Black slaves brought to Brazil from nations such as Angola, Congo, Buinea. During the period from the 16th to the 18th century, at least three million slaves were transported to Brazil from Southwest Africa primarily to work on the sugar plantations. The New World slave masters, anxious to keep their captives under their strict domination, imposed harsh prohibitions and restrictions on parent forms of Capoeira, often referred to a "N'golo". To insure their survival, the traditional forms were infused with dance...
