Other brass instruments
In addition to the French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba, there are a few other brass instruments you might like to consider. Most of them are associated with brass bands rather than orchestras.
If you live in an area where brass bands are popular, you might like to consider the Euphonium (a small tuba, so read the page about The Tuba), the Baritone Horn which is similar but has a narrower bore and not such a nice sound, or the Tenor Horn which is also similar but much smaller. There is also the Flugelhorn which is a still smaller tenor horn but is played held out in front of your face like a trumpet or cornet.
All these instruments are transposing instruments, mostly in B flat which means that when you play a C it sounds like a B flat to everyone else. Your printed music is adjusted accordingly.

Polishing Brass Instruments
aka: I've got the Buffing and Polishing blues.... Alan Larsen - 07:34am Apr 10, 1999
I like many others here, am primarily a self taught brass "technician". I still struggle with polishing and buffing, and will gladly take any and all advice on the subject. I'm currently using a 1725 rpm motor, with 6" wheels. I realize the surface feet p/minute (sfpm) is a little slow with this combination, and I'm working on it. I'm using sewn cotton buffs for tripoli, and flannel for red rouge. I'm not using anything between the tripoli and red rouge like a white, yellow or lime type compound. My biggest problem so far, is getting the surface good enough in my eyes to achieve an acceptable laquered surface. I seem to almost always end up with very fine scratches after red rouge buffing that really irritate me! You can only really see them from under 1 ft away, and only then under bright light, but I know they're there :-) Brasso will take care of these with little problem, but I understand the ammonia in Brasso can have some long term detrimental effect ( supposedly localized surface crystallinity effects on the brass), so i'd rather not have to end up here if I can help it. It also leaves a nasty black film that's harder to remove than buffing compound before laquering. Any thoughts on technique, better "quality" compounds available, types of buff (chamois vs flannel etc) would be greatly appreceated. Will getting the sfpm up help a great deal, should I use an intermedeate compound between the tripoli and rouge?

The French Horn The ancestor of the French horn was a primitive instrument fashioned from the curved horn of a cow. The French Horn is among the most difficult of instruments to master, but it possesses a brilliant, almost rugged voice which adds a wealth of color to the orchestra. The player can alter the sound and pitch by placing his hand in the bell or mouth of the instrument, or by using a mute.
The Trombone This is the only instrument which employs a sliding tubing for change of pitch. (Silly people used to believe the player swallowed the instrument!) Like singers, there are alto, tenor and bass trombones, each with its own distinctive tone quality. As a solo instrument, a trombone can sound brassy or soft and romantic or even very solemn. return to top of page
The Trumpet The brilliant voice of the trumpet has been heard over the centuries sounding alarms, calls to battle and adding to the excitement of parades. Its sweet, singing voice also sounds taps over military graves. Like the French Horn, the trumpet sound comes from blowing through complicated tubing, but it can play an octave higher than the Horn. There are many different kinds of trumpets with higher and lower voices, and these increase the versatility of the instrument even further.

Brass instruments, although not originally made of brass, are among the oldest instruments. Many were originally made of horns and were used for all kinds of functions - religious, ceremonial, or utilitarian. Metal horns of all sizes and forms, provided with cup-shaped mouthpieces, began to be used by hunters and medieval watchmen. These metal horns were embellished and handsomely decorated for use by members of medieval guilds.

Part II. Applications, Practical Examples
Paul Anglmayer Wilfried Kausel General Consideration Optimization of a trumpet in B-flat ... References Summary: This part of the paper deals with practical experiences with the brass optimization program presented in Part I. Examples have been picked out to illustrate its application to real world problems. Although the user interface of the software is simple and easy to understand optimization results are strongly dependent on well selected starting conditions, a good parameter selection and optimization goals which are not impossible to meet. General Consideration Because of the difficulties to obtain accurately measured bore data of a real instrument (without destroying it) the idea of using the optimizer to reconstruct the true geometry of an instrument presents itself. Attempts have been made to improve the accuracy of a measurement by optimization with promising results. When coordinates are selected to be released for the optimizer it is essential to first consider carefully if a modification in this place later on can actually be applied to the instrument by the instrument maker and makes sense at all from his point of view.

Richard Bradley Trombone The trombone is a brass-wind instrument that is most typically used as the tenor voice in a brass section. It has a cup-shaped mouthpiece, a slide mechanism, and a nine-foot tube that is folded to overlap in the centre. Most trombones are made out of brass though some are sometimes nickel-plated. With the slide closed, the trombone produces the third B-flat below middle C as its fundamental note. Some orchestras also use bass trombones that have a lower fundamental note.
