The Brass Family
Previous: Woodwind Instruments Next: Keyboard The trumpet cornet French horn trombone ... baritone or euphonium tuba , and sousaphone are common members of the brass family. Generally, these instruments are all made of brass. On a brass instrument, sound is produced by buzzing the lips. You can get an idea of buzzing blowing up a balloon, the stretching the opening and letting the air out. The squealing noise is very similar to the buzz a French horn player makes. Try to buzz your own lips. Lick your lips, place them together as if saying "mmmm," and blow, keeping your lips together. This should make a buzz. The mouthpiece of brass instruments helps to control and to make the sound clearer. The rest of the brass instrument makes the sound louder. Most of the brass instruments have a lot of tubing that is curled up. The instrument with the most tubing, the tuba, plays the lowest notes; the trumpet, with the least tubing, plays the highest notes. Valves are used to open up different lengths of tubing. When tubes are opened, the sound is lowered depending on the length of the tube. The trombone does not have any valves. The trombone changes pitch by pulling the slide in and out. To play a brass instrument, you need a good ear for music as any fingering on the instrument can make many different pitches. The brass player must know what sound to make before the note is played.

Products by Group Woodwind Instruments Brass Instruments Trumpets French Horns ... Accessories Brass Instruments Brass instruments are wind instruments, such as the trumpet, French horn or trombone, made of brass or another metal, with a funnel-shaped mouthpiece. Sound is produced through vibration of the lips and adjustment of the length of the sound tube by means of valves or a slide. Brass instruments, unlike any of the other instrument types, rely on the player to produce the vibration that causes the sound. With brass instruments, the player's lips vibrate against a mouthpiece. Instruments in this category include trumpets, cornets, bugles, flugelhorns, alto horns, French horns, tubas, trombones, baritones, euphoniums, sousaphones and tubas. While some instruments, such as the saxophone, may be made of brass and greatly resemble brass instruments, these instruments rely on a reed to initiate the sound (see Woodwind Instruments.) Brass instruments distinguish themselves by the way they manipulate the air that travels through them. Most of these types of instruments incorporate "on and off" valves. These valves either extend or shorten the path of the airway. When this happens, the air must travel longer or shorter distances, which causes the frequency of the sound to change. The slide trombone is a rather unique brass instrument. It has only one valve which is analog (no definite position) as opposed to the digital valves (either on or off) of the other instruments in this family. When the slide is extended, the airway is lengthened thus producing lower sounds.

This look into brass instrument acoustic behavior begins our study of instruments which initiate their vibrations directly in air, rather than via mechanical vibrations which are later transferred to air. These ``wind'' instruments include brasses, woodwinds, and the voice. The three principle components of brass instruments are given by the air column (waveguide), player's lips/mouthpiece (excitation source), and bell (radiation). If you wish to pursue a more in-depth analysis of brass instruments, perhaps for your class project, a unique collection of research materials is maintained here at CCRMA. The Musical Acoustics Research Library (MARL) is a collection of independent archives or libraries assembled by distinguished groups or individuals in the field of musical acoustics research. Currently, MARL is comprised of the Catgut Acoustical Society Library, the Arthur H. Benade Archive, the John Backus Archive, and the John W. Coltman Archive. Arthur Benade, in particular, made substantial contributions to our understanding of brass instrument acoustic behavior.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Whereas it is usually quite easy to determine whether an instrument is pitched in, say, F or Bb or Eb, is not always obvious which octave of F or Bb is being referred to. The following is a comparison table of the pitch of the common brass instruments in descending order of pitch. As a reference point, the second harmonic of a Bb trumpet or cornet is Bb below middle C.
    • Bb or A piccolo trumpet The trumpet is a brass instrument. It is the highest in register, above the tuba, euphonium, trombone, sousaphone, and french horn. A person who plays the trumpet is sometimes called a trumpeter but more often a trumpet player. The trumpet is made of brass bent into a rough spiral. Although the bore of the trumpet is said to be mostly cylindrical, it is formed from a complex series of

    • Eb trumpet or soprano cornet The cornet is a brass instrument closely related to the trumpet. The cornet is a standard concert band instrument; most bands have at least two cornets, as they are often scored in preference to trumpets. The trumpet, however, is used more often than the cornet in orchestral, small ensemble, and solo performance. The cornet is the main high voice of the Brass band in the UK and other countries which have British-style brass bands.

In principle, anything that somehow produces sound can serve as a musical instrument, but the expression is reserved generally to items that have that specific purpose. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology Instruments are often divided by the way in which they generate sound:

In conjunction with the player's lips and, on many woodwind instruments, a reed, it produces the basic musical tones that characterize each particular instrument, from the single reed of the clarinet or saxophone to the flared turned brass tube of the horns, such as the trumpet, trombone, tuba, and the bugle. The double reed of the oboe or bassoon may also be thought of as a mouthpiece, although it is rarely referred to as such, because only the reed is placed in the mouth, while on the clarinet, a portion of the instrument itself is as well.

Families Instruments can be split up into different groups, or families. These relate to the way an instrument is played, the sound it makes or the material it is made from. The main five groups are: Strings Brass Woodwind Keyboards , and Percussion Strings Stringed instruments are " chordophones " which means they make sound by vibration of their strings. This family includes:
    • Violin Viola Cello Double Bass Harp Guitar (electric and acoustic)
All except guitars are found in symphony orchestras Brass Brass instruments are - surprisingly enough - usually made of brass. They are " aerophones " so produce sound as the air blown through them vibrates in the tubes. They use a series of valves (or a slide) to produce the required pitch, passing the air through a longer or shorter distance of tubes. The longer the distance, the lower the note. Some Brass instruments include:
    • Trumpet Trombone Tuba French Horn Cornet Tenor Horn Euphonium

    79. Understanding Brass Instrument Intonation
Understanding Brass Instrument Intonation. Secondly, one needs to understand the design of the brass instruments and the function of the valve mechanism.
    http://music.ou.edu/divisions/applied/horn/intonation.html
    Understanding Brass Instrument Intonation
Performing with superior intonation is a universal problem in all instrumental families. Musicians are bombarded by an array of difficulties when addressing intonation. Not only are there specific problems associated with particular instruments, but other problems arise such as scoring, instrument design, temperature, and physical manifestations of the performer. Intonation should be addressed early in the training of the elementary band students. Of paramount concern should be the establishment of a workable embouchure, which is allowed to respond freely with a good wind supply and support structure. In the first band classes, brass players should be introduced to good breathing techniques that will transfer readily to their instruments. Only when the tone is well supported and driven by the wind column in a singing style can intonation be addressed. There are several inherent problems regarding brass instrument intonation. Initially, a competent performer needs to be aware of the natural intonation tendencies of the harmonic series. Secondly, one needs to understand the design of the brass instruments and the function of the valve mechanism. Thirdly, all musicians need to be aware of the different tuning problems when performing with a keyboard instrument (using equal temperament) and an instrumental ensemble (using just/natural intonation). Finally, there is the difficulty of using this knowledge in practice in order to make intonation adjustments in performance.
