Music Early "brass instruments": from the lur to the tuba
Wagner tuba, Ursula Wenzel, Munich, 1978
The naturally formed horns include such examples as the buffalo horn from Sumatra, the shophar from Israel and various transverse horns from Africa. Almost without exception, transverse horns produce a single note which is often very powerful, so that these horns were used for signalling. Like the other examples shown, they are almost always made of animal horns, bones or snail-shells. With its wide-ranging sound, the alpenhorn, on the other hand, is used not just as a signal, but for playing simple songs and dances as well. The alpenhorn is a curved wooden trumpet of one to four metres in length which is found not only in the Alps, but also in other high mountain regions such as Tibet, the Carpathians, the Pyrenees and in Scandinavia. Alpenhorns are made from the trunks of young spruces or fir-trees which are cut open, hollowed out and then put together again, tied round with strips of bark. The cup mouthpiece is also made of wood or of lead.
The making of brass instruments A new technique for bending pipes or tubes came into use in about 1400. This involved filling the pipes with lead which was then melted out again after bending into shape.

Brass Instruments
Top of Page Brass instruments, such as the trumpet, make sound as a result of a musician blowing into them. So, why are they called brass instruments? Because they are made of the metal brass. Other brass instruments include the french horn, trombone and tuba. The pitch of the sound is related to the size of the air chamber. The size of the air chamber relates to the size and length of the pipes, or tubes, on the instrument. Brass instruments tend to coil, or have many loops of piping. If you were to straighten one out, it would be quite long. Coiling the instrument to lengthen the pipe increases the chamber size. The larger the chamber size, the lower the sound's pitch. The musician blows into the mouthpiece at one end, and the music comes out the other end. The position of the musician's lips and mouth on the mouthpiece are used to change the sound's pitch.

59. Brass Instruments
brass instruments. brass instruments are in fact mostly made of brass, and consist of a long pipe that is usually coiled and has no holes.
http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/davidmacaulay/instruments2_mac.shtm
BRASS INSTRUMENTS Brass instruments are in fact mostly made of brass, and consist of a long pipe that is usually coiled and has no holes. The player blows into a mouthpiece at one end of the pipe, the vibration of the lips setting the air column vibrating throughout the tube. The force of the lips varies to make the vibrating column divide into two halves, three thirds, and so on. This gives an ascending series of notes called harmonics. Opening extra lengths of tubing then gives other notes that are not in this harmonic series.
LOW PRESURE
With low lip pressure, the air column vibrates in two halves and each half gives the note middle C. The length of the tube is therefore twice as long as a woodwind instrument sounding the same note INCREASED PRESSURE
Raising the lip pressure makes the air column vibrate in three thirds. Each vibrating section is two-thirds the length of the previous section, raising the pitch of the note to G. INCREASED LENGTH
To play an E, which is not in the harmonic series, the player keeps the air vibrating in three thirds and increases the total length of the tube. Each vibrating section becomes four-fifths the length for middle C.
THE TROMBONE
The trombone has a section of tubing called a slide that can be moved in and out. The player pushes out the slide to lengthen the vibrating air column and produce notes that are not in the harmonic series.
