Another result of the addition of the bell is the production of the pedal tone, a unique characteristic of brass instruments. The graphic at right is active.
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/music/brassa.html
Producing a harmonic sequence of notes with a trumpet
A closed tube produces only odd harmonics, but it is desirable for a brass instrument to produce all harmonics - a full harmonic sequence. This is accomplished by forcing the resonant frequencies toward the harmonic frequencies with the acoustic effects of the bell and mouthpiece. The mouthpiece forces the upper resonances down (the mouthpiece effect ) and the bell forces the lower resonances up (the bell effect ). The result is close to a harmonic sequence, but the lowest resonance is discarded and an extra pedal tone can be played as the fundamental of the sequence. Producing an exact harmonic sequence of notes has its problems, as may be seen from the values of harmonics in cents . The upper harmonics are not exactly in tune with equal temperament , and the seventh harmonic is particularly troublesome. Index

The Bell Effect
Besides being a very effective sound radiator, the bell of a brass instrument affects its acoustics by raising the lower resonances from those of a closed tube toward a more useful harmonic sequence. The lowest resonance is shifted up the most. When the overall length is adjusted, the high resonances can be left unchanged. Another result of the addition of the bell is the production of the

Introduction
Most brass players believe that the playing qualities of their instruments are affected by the method of construction and the materials used. Composition, thickness, and hardness of the metals used are all cited as important. Phrases such as ``hand-hammered bell'' are often found in advertising literature. This paper will give an overview of the tools, techniques, and materials used by brass-instrument makers today and in centuries gone by. Traditional techniques are still used along with the latest metalworking methods, so that a present-day instrument may contain some parts produced by computer-controlled machine tools and others made using processes familiar to sixteenth-century artisans. Is there any objective evidence that the sound of a brass instrument is affected by the material from which it is made? Indeed there is. An experiment was performed using a French horn with a removable bell flare. One microphone was mounted inside the mouthpiece cup and another on the axis of the bell about one and one half bell diameters away from the bell rim. A meter connected to the mouthpiece signal allowed the player to monitor her playing level and repeatably produce the same level inside the horn with different bell flares attached to the instrument.

The Eb/F Pitched Brass Instrument Page
Created and maintained by RON LUTTERBIE
This page is a shot at explaining the differences between the brass instruments out there that are pitched in Eb/F. I've seen other pages out there attempt to do the same, but I believe mine to be the most accurate of any I have come across.
Many people are confused about the differences between the mellophone, mellophonium, alto horn, and french horn. Many people also just plain don't know (or care!) what they are. While in some cases there are no definitive answers, below are definitions and pictures of each as best as I can tell based on years of research. In addition, I have pictures of numerous other ODD horns, most pitched in Eb or F.
I guess I have a bias toward these instruments, since I play tenor horn in the Cincinnati Brass Band and play the Horn in a brass quintet, community band, and anyplace where they will pay me!! I currently own a Conn 8d, Besson Soverign Tenor Horn, 1926 Conn Mellophone, 1960's Conn (Kenton inspired) Mellophonium, Frumpet (Gross!), Bach Mellophone, and a Couesnon Eb Alto Flugel. Click here for a very good article regarding the origins of the horn written by Mark Anderson of Woodstock, NY, as well as descriptions of the different versions out there. (No pictures, but a very good read.)

Brass instrument
A brass instrument is a musical instrument that uses a cupped mouthpiece shaped in a way that allows the player's lips to vibrate to generate the instrument's sound. Brass instruments are usually, but not invariably, made of brass . Similarly, in musical terms, not all instruments constructed from brass belong in the category of "brass instruments"; a notable example is the saxophone , which, although usually made of brass, is a woodwind instrument Because the player has direct control of the prime vibrator (the lips), brass instruments exploit the player's ability to select the harmonic at which the instrument's column of air will vibrate. By making the instrument about twice as long as the equivalent woodwind instrument and starting with the second harmonic, players can get a good range of notes simply by varying the tension of their lips (see embouchure ). Brass players call each harmonic a "partial". Brass instruments generally come in one of three families:
  • Natural brass instruments, where the player can only play notes in the instrument's
