    Brass Instruments
Brass instruments get their name because they are made of metal (although not necessarily brass). Today brass instruments have a separate part called the mouthpiece, which fits into the leadpipe, or small end, of the tubing. The player blows air through the mouthpiece, buzzing his or her lips against it. As with all instruments, the faster the vibration, the higher the pitch, and the shorter the tubing the higher the pitch. While modern woodwind instruments have many keys, modern brass instruments have three or four valves (if any) to help create different pitches. Pushing down a valve alters the pitch by accessing more tubing. Players must also change the speed of the air and the muscle tension in their lips while buzzing them to change pitches.
As brass instruments became longer and more complicated, it was not practical to leave them stretched out straight, so makers began to coil them for ease in playing and carrying. When valves were invented, in the early 1800s, this allowed trumpets, French horns, and tubas to produce every note in the chromatic scale, putting them on a more equal footing with strings and woodwind instruments in orchestral playing.
    Trumpet
A bugle is a type of trumpet with no valves. Because it has no valves, it is mostly used for "bugle calls," which don’t require many different notes. The earliest bugles were made from the horns of young bulls.

"Much smoother, clearer, sweeter, more centered, easier to play, more clarity, darker and richer, refined, more flexible, truer, and more coherent," say the professional musicians. The music industry has recognized that brass instruments become sonically seasoned over time. The years of sonic seasoning enhances clarity, tonal quality along with ease of instrument playability. With cryogenics, a horn can be likened with a sonically seasoned one of 24 years in just 24 hours. You can be confident that your instrument will receive proper care. Introduction to the acoustics of brass instruments
How does a trumpet work? Why does a trombone sound the way it does? Why is the french horn hard to play? This page explains the physics of brass instruments (technically the lip reed family). It requires no mathematics beyond multiplication and division, nor any technical knowledge of acoustics. For a range of background topics in acoustics (waves, frequencies, resonances, decibels etc) click on "Basics" in the navigation bar at left. Overview
    Sound
First something about sound. If you put your finger gently on a loudspeaker you will feel it vibrate-if it is playing a low note loudly you can see it moving. When it moves forwards, it compresses the air next to it, which raises its pressure. Some of this air flows outwards, compressing the next layer of air. The disturbance in the air spreads out as a travelling sound wave. Ultimately this sound wave causes a very tiny vibration in your eardrum-but that's another story.
    Frequency
At any point in the air near the source of sound, the molecules are moving backwards and forwards, and the air pressure varies up and down by very small amounts. The number of vibrations per second is called the frequency (f). It is measured in cycles per second or Hertz (Hz). The pitch of a note is almost entirely determined by the frequency: high frequency for high pitch and low for low. 440 vibrations per second (440 Hz) is heard as the note A in the treble clef, a vibration of 220 Hz is heard as the A one octave below, 110 Hz as the A one octave below that and so on. We can hear sounds from about 15 Hz to 20 kHz (1 kHz = 1000 Hz). A contrabassoon can play Bb0 at 29 Hz. When this note is played loudly, you may be able to hear the individual pulses of high pressure emitted as the reed opens and closes 29 times per second. Human ears are most sensitive to sounds between 1 and 4 kHz - about two to four octaves above middle C (See

    Cornetts and Serpents
Instruments of the cornett family are in fact hybrids of woodwind and brass instruments, having the toneholes and fingering system of woodwind instruments but the cup mouthpiece of brasswind instruments. Their tone quality, therefore, is a unique blend of woodwind and brasswind properties, very pure and lacking in overtones; it was considered to be the instrument which sounded most like the human voice. It is not at all surprising that these instruments, throughout their long and distinguished history, were used to support unobtrusively the voices in church choirs; the serpent, the contrabass member of this family, survived in this capacity until well into the nineteenth century. Cornetts were also used in combination with other woodwind and brass instruments in the municipal and military bands of the sixteenth century and seventeenth centuries. The standard five-part mixed band of the renaissance period was a schalmei or soprano shawm, a treble cornett, an alto shawm, a tenor sackbutt, and a bass dulcian; the tower music bands of seventeenth century Germany were composed of two treble cornetts and three sackbutts. The cornetto also was used as a virtuoso solo instrument in Italian early baroque chamber and orchestral music of the early seventeenth century. The smaller cornetts fell into disuse after the turn of the eighteenth century, but the serpent survived another century and a half as a bass voice in the wind bands of the classical and early romantic eras and as an organ substitute for rural church choirs.
